My friend is hosting her church progressive dinner. She will be hosting the desert portion and wants to serve wine. Is there a specific type of wine that goes well with deserts? she said there will be many different kind of deserts.

Lots of dessert wines. I think it also depends on how much$$$$ your friend is able to spend.

Various Ice Wines or Ultra Late Harvest wines are very sweet wines. You could always go with champagne. Even a lightly sweet Riesling would work nicely. :)

And then again if she's serving something very dark chocolate and rich....she may want to go with a red. *I forgot that idea since I'm not fond of reds myself* :)

a 'Gewurtztraminer'...no clue on correct spelling:D..... bottled in California by Fetzer
Really smooth, fruity and light....

While shopping for a bottle of Merlot the other day, I saw a $53.00 bottle of dessert wine called Dolci. I'd love to try it, but for that price, I'd spend the extra few $$ and get some Dom!

I'd go with a reisling or even a sparkling wine, Martini & Rossi's Asti Spumante is a good, relatively inexpensive one. IT kind of depends on the dessert.... if it is dark, chocolately and rich a good Pinot Noir would be nice or a Cab. Sav.... I'm trying to think of a specific one I learned about in training that was wonderful with chocolate..... or Aziano Chianti Classico

Some classic wines served at the end of a meal would include Port (my favorites), Grand Marnier, or Cognac's. Ask a wine store, they can point you in the direction of the right wine for the right price.

Grand Marnier is actually a liqueur not a wine. There are tons of sweet dessert wines to choose from. Check in with the folks at the liquor store. The would probably be able to help you find something in your price range that would go very nicely.

There are also a few great actual desert wines---the two that I serve often are

Robert Mondavi Bianco D'or

and also

La Famiglia by Robert Mondavi

both are botttled by Mondavi under different labels. They are very similar, however I do like the Bianco better.

Another nice deser wine is Muscat vin de Glaciere by Bonny Doon Vineyards

the best way to get what a desert wine is all about is to do the following

let a few choco chips melt in your mouth---jsut after they are all melted, take a sip of one of these desert wines---the sensation and taste is unreal

enjoy

I'd say champagne or Gewurtzraminer(a German one)
too! Real Ice Wine would be perfect but extremely
expensive. Some good red for the chocolates is in
good taste-especially if it's dark chocolate! mmmmmm
I'd serve Sherry after dessert with coffee if they are
really into alcohol but I'd guess not.

I wouldn't serve wine at all. I dislike sweet wine, and most people associate sweet wine with desert. Pairing different wines with deserts is hard even for someone who is experienced with this. For probably less money, overall, since you serve smaller portions, I'd buy a bottle of sambuca, amaretto, irish cream, frangelico, grand marnier, and my favorite, Drambuie, although, that and the grand marnier are probably the most expensive of the lot. If cost is a factor, I'd stick with the first four and omit the final two.

To make it fancy, I'd bring some coffee beans to drop one or two into the sambucca.

You can also suggest that your friend do desert coffees. That will cut down on the amount of alcohol per-cup so she could stretch it more... a cup of coffee... a little irish cream... a dollop of whipped cream... YUM.
