Even if the additional driver is NOT on your policy at home?:confused3 We have Full Coverage with AllState.. What about the credit card protection? Will MY credit card cover someone driving the car, other than myself- so long as they are listed on the rental agreement?

I would love to forgo the LDW- It's 1/3 the cost of the rental!;)

I know I have protection for me- what about my Mom?:sad2:

The $273.90 IS the Total Rate including additional driver & Fees...:goodvibes:goodvibes The other $138 is insurance. My Mom will be doing most of the driving- she wants to stay with my Uncle in Clermont, while we'll be at Universal- (really DONT need a car at Universal...) Since she doesn't use credit cards:headache:, I am renting one and adding her as a driver. Has anyone ever rented this way before?

You should speak with your agent regarding what your personal policy will cover.

Your policy at home covers you and those listed on the policy, those not listed are not covered, regardless of the contract you have with a rental agency.

I would see what HER policy would cover.

Please get the answer from your insurance agent or directly from your insurance company. Listening to answers from anonymous people on a WDW related site is probably not a good idea.

If her name is not on the rental contract she would not be covered in the event of an accident. I would check with your credit card company to see who is covered and get it in writing.

Yes, because none of us know what we're talking about. I'm also far from anonymous.

A personal auto policy will definately cover an insured within the United States up to the limits set forth in the policy (Note: No one should be driving around with state minimums). Passengers would also be covered without issues as they are not the driver.

The problem with what the OP was asking is they wanted their parent to be covered as a driver under their policy, which they are not named as an insured.

Assuming the OP paid for the additional driver (or the fee was waived), the rental coverage minimums (from the Rental Agency) would apply in terms of liability with another party, but if the liability exceeds the amount the rental car company is required to hold, the responsible party will still be the driver, and if referring to the above again, if they are not insured on the OP's personal auto policy, they will not be covered.

That said, there are some options, which can vary, which include credit card rental protection (which is most often secondary, but if there is no insurance to claim against, this is a moot point and it will become primary) or if the mother also has their own auto insurance policy.

It is important to note, that although your vehicle is always protected when insured (ie. if you let a friend borrow who does not reside in your home) under a personal auto insurance policy, all the same rules do not apply to a rental car.

I asked here because in my estimation- most Dis'ers are usually very well informed.:thumbsup2 Based on the suggestions, I'm just going to go ahead and get the LDW. Thanks for all the input.:goodvibes

PS- I was rather surprised at how hard it is to find information on car insurance offered by rental agencies (fees, rules, etc) even after searching flyertalk and the Dis.

It is amazing how difficul this is, isn't it?

I have called both AMEX and Citibank to get information about the coverage for rental cars when using their credit cards. Both e-mailed me the terms of the coverage in effect at that time. After reading them, I have been using Citibank instead of Amex because I also use a coupon and Citibank's language is clearer that coverage still applies in those circumstances.

Amex also offers an add-on coverage for an additional fee (around $20 per rental I believe) that is supposed to provide primary insurance, but it may also not cover a second -- though authorized -- driver. You might want to look into it. -- Suzanne

Why didn't you call your agent? You credit card company? Isn't it worth $140 to make two measly phone calls?

Only if the other driver is a named insured on the policy. Not a household driver but they have to be named on the declaration page. Such as us, both my wife and I are named on the policy dec page and would be covered while driving another vehicle. Now my son who is listed as a household driver, he would not be covered in another vehicle - only mine.
