Will you get the Covid vaccine?

The “lockdown until 2022” talk is ridiculous. We can’t expect to continue to keep certain things shut down for that long. Personally I’m trying to remain hopeful that even if we don’t reach “herd immunity” for a while, we’ll see a big enough impact that hospitalization and death rates will decrease. And that to me is the most important thing because that was the original goal - keep hospitals from being overwhelmed. The one frustration that I share with critics of the virus lockdowns is the changing of the goalposts. COVID is not going to be eliminated, but I’d feel safer if infection rates were lower and people knew they could get care if they needed it. I’d like to believe that even if we’re not “back to normal” for a while, certain restrictions can be loosened throughout next year.

I’m with you on the goal post changing, every time you turn around the CDC or someone moves them back. COVID will not be eliminated like with every other virus, it will only be contained.

Getting vaccine tomorrow. Fingers crossed no long term side effects :)

I've heard about short time side effects......what are some of the long term effects?? Maybe I need to dig my head out of the sand a bit and do some research but I always come here first. ;)

i've already had my first dose of pfizer and i get my second dose on wednesday morning (the day after tomorrow)
I got the Moderna. Not by choice. I don’t really know which one I would choose if I could. like I tell my kids... You get what you get and you don’t pitch a fit.

side effect for me today- nausea.

before the vaccines were even approved, i said i wanted moderna, since the storage requirements are easier, so i figured there is less chance that it will be stored wrong.

but in the end, pfizer is all that's available here at least as of now.
So that's what i was given. Here's hoping it was stored properly and mixed properly and administered properly.
fingers crossed.

No one knows what the long term effects (if any) are. By definition, you'd have to wait "long term" to find out. Long term effects are what have me concerned. In 20 or 30 years are we going to see ads on TV... "if you got the <insert brand name here> Covid vaccine and you've been diagnosed with <insert disease here>, call Freddy Lawyer at 1-888-555-1234. You may be entitled to money."

And before anyone brings it up, I'm pretty confident all the things that we're seeing ads for now were deemed "safe" when they were given to the public.

Vaccine or no vaccine, if numbers start declining, our authorities better darned well ease restrictions accordingly like they did last spring. We are under rather draconian measures currently and compliance is pretty good, given that we are driving towards the goal of maintaining hospital capacity. If that is no longer under threat, there is no need for these measures in their current form.

You do have a point, absolutely. For me, I’m willing to take that risk. It’s never a bad thing for people to carefully consider their decisions though and be settled in their own minds on why they’re doing things.

Those who take the vaccine need to still mask because they can still get it. So, the vaccine does not create immunity and does not prevent transmission.

I guess we have a new definition for vaccine, because this is the current definition:

Vaccine: a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease.

good gravy they don’t know yet if it prevents transmission, they are studying that now. The first goal was to make sure it prevented sever illness. There is this thing called viral load that the media refuses to discuss and it’s huge. Even if infected but keeps the viral load low will help in spread . Someone with a higher viral load is gonna spread it easier and to more people likely.

Many people, even in medicine and science, are waiting a little longer to be vaccinated due to what you mentioned. It’s not because they’re anti-vax. They’d be very willing when vaccines developed and manufactured from more traditional methods become available, hopefully later this year. There’s quite a few in the works. BioNTek/Pfizer and Moderna were just out first since it’s easier to create a synthetic mRNA.

Having said that, I could still recommend the new mRNA technology vaccines to the older population such as my parents (65+).

I’m really afraid that some of the people who get the vaccine will stop wearing masks. In my area, a lot of the naysayers who were reluctant to wear masks anyway, ended up getting the vaccine early. It’s the most hypocritical thing I’ve seen in years. If they didn’t wear masks to protect themselves then I really doubt they’ll wear them as a courtesy to others. I’m referring to the people who put on a mask to get through the door in Walmart and immediately pulled it down under their mouth thirty seconds after they passed the greeter.

I am trying to hard to get a vaccine for myself and 78 year old father. We are in NY and with the new guidelines there are 7 million people trying to get coveted spots. Someone yesterday compared it to getting a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance. My son just came back from Disney on Monday and he said that at 1 when they release a second batch it was silent and when people got a boarding time you would hear a cheer. That is how I feel only I get jealous of the people who got an appointment. I have filled out the eligibility information at least 25 times hoping something will open up.

in one of the healthcare systems in metro detroit (beaumont), you have a better chance of winning the lottery or being hit by a meteor.

I keep checking to see if I have an invitation from Beaumont to make an appointment. My best friend got hers and is being vaccinated on Friday. I told her to buy a lottery ticket because she is very lucky! Good luck!

Well, there was some hopeful news from J&J today of their traditionally developed vaccine—and it was a study of a single dose. (Though they are concurrently conducting 2-dose studies to determine whether it has a more effective and durable result).

Safety results were similar to any other reputable vaccine, and early data shows it to elicit a better immune response than with a single dose of either Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech mRNA vaccines. Plus, the J&J vaccine does not require an unusually cold storage.

Go J&J! (Not a shareholder, but maybe I should be).

I'm getting it as soon as I am eligible. The way I look at it, the potential effects of Covid are known. I could have mild symptoms, I could have long term lung problems, etc. or I could die from it.

The potential effects of the vaccine are arm pain, possible fever/nausea, etc., feeling bad for a few days and unknown long term effects. I'd rather take the risk with the vaccine than with Covid.

I added myself to our local waiting list. I am supposed to be in the second round, it's one of the perks of being fat.
