Will DVC spoil our kids?

The wife and I just became BWV members and are expecting our first child 4 weeks from today.

Over the weekend we went to a local fair, actually a very large fair here in New England called the "Big E".

It has all your typical fried foods, old rides and shows.

While we enjoyed ourselves it cetainly is no Disney!

We got to thinking about how our kids might react to fairs and other places we might visit after having the luxury or going to Disney.

Have you found DVC causing your kids to not enjoy other vacations or places?

To answer your question quite simply the answer is a definate YES:tongue:

Well ... it certainly has the potential! My brother and his family (DW, and 3 children then: DS6, DD4, DS2) used one of our timeshare weeks a few summers back. I had booked a huge 3BR unit in a family friendly SoCal property (not DVC). While the two boys shared a room, my niece had her own space.

Fast foward to last year's fire season. The same family has evacuated their home during the Oct firestorms and is checking into a hotel on the coast. Darling niece drops her stuff, looks around ... and asks, "But where is my room?"

The family has decided that timeshare vacationing has already made its mark on at least one of their little sweeties! :D

The Big E was a disappointment even if I didn't own DVC. I remember it fondly from my childhood. This year I paid a bunch on money for all of us to basically shop and buy food. What happened to it?

More to your point. The kids still like six flags and that's close by. In fact they like alot of local hokey small-town type fun. I think they still get overwhelmed by Disney.

They just like doing things as a family. It's me that's become jaded.

We took our DS(8) and DD(7) to Niagra Fall Last Year, stayed at the Marriott. When we walked into the room my DS wanted to Know where the rest of the room was. :D

So in answer to your question YES they'll be spoiled

Our 6 and 7 year old boys love Disney vacations, and certainly enjoyed the 1 bdrm we stayed in - but also can't wait to go camping in a tiny tent, go stay on Grandma's couch, or sleep in a Motel 6 on the way to anywhere. They still love fairs, carnivals, museums - everything has it's time and place! I think as long as you continue to expose them to other vacation experiences, kids are as flexible as we are!

The accomodations will spoil the kids, but the parks won't. Kids love the Magic Kingdom and they love the County Fair, don't worry about that.

By the way, the world's biggest kids spoiler is a cruise. Once the kids get used to a staff, well, they'll expect one at home too!

In either case, they're just kids. They're pretty easy to detox. Don't let that hold you back from pampering them once in a while.

Now that we are DVC, we have gone several times this past year. We knew we have been to Disney too many times when, at AKL (on the weekend to conserve points) DS 4 pointed to the giraffe outside our balcony and pronounced "Look Momma, he ALMOST looks real." I spent several minutes convincing him it was indeed real.. Ahh, the Disney magic!

I wouldn't worry about the parks diminishing your children's enjoyment of other vacation activities. Our sons, age 8 and 5, have been to WDW 2 times each and love it. They also enjoyed the county fair and trips to a local lake to fish.

I personally think that we are in a very good situation where our worries are about our children being "spoiled" by a great vacation :)

I've got an OKW contract that is in the closing process now. We are so excited about becoming part of the DVC family :teeth:

I dont see how DVC wont spoil our kids. Its spoiled my wife . On our very first DVC stay she told me she doesnt think she can stay in a normal hotel room on vacation anymore. But thats fine with me because being able to stay in a first class 1 or 2br villa instead of staying in a all star room is the reason we bought DVC in the first place.

Well, fortunately there are many hotel chains available with one bedroom suites, we enjoy embassy suites and that nice breakfast in the mornings.

Life is short, enjoy your time together and make it the best it can be.

Ummm...ABSOLUTELY it will spoil your child...congrats on having one!!! They are the most fun, and the most work you will ever have!!

I am a complete "doting" mom, who gave up one career (found another) to stay home with her...and, she is one of the MOST spoiled kids EVER....and, dh and I wouldn't have it ANY other way!!!

There is SUCH a short period of time that she will "believe" whole-heartedly in all things Disney (and, in all things magical as well)...who cares if it spoils her...I LIVE to "spoil" her!!!

And, call it a hunch...but, when you first see the face of your beautiful new baby...you will want to spoil him/her, too!!!

My childhood was rough...there was VERY little magic (along with very little of a LOT of things)!!! When my granddad died (in 1980) he left my mom $2000 dollars hidden in an envelope in the garage (so his wife wouldn't know). My mom took EVERY penny of that and took us to WDW where we stayed at the Deluxe resorts for a week...now, we were a family on food stamps and free lunches at school. This was the BEST thing that had ever happened to me....and, it was the ONLY truly magical thing that had ever happened in my life!!! I was hooked!!! And, probably part of the reason that my dd has EVERY Disney thing I can find!! Yes...it ruined me for every other theme park and fair...but, what a WONDERFUL thing to be "ruined" in such a way!! Just to know that there is a place where "magic" not only lives, but thrives changed my perspective about life altogether. It gave me hope that there were people and places that were happy and safe...I really needed that.

If my child becomes a Disney "snob"...so be it...I'll just say that she has really good taste!!! But, I cannot imagine her life not being full of magic for as long as she believes it is real. I think such experiences can truly change our children's perception of the world....and themselves!!

So...like the commercial says...."DVC...$30,000.00...a child who truly believes in magic....Priceless".

Yes they will be spoiled and that's not such a bad thing. I like to think that my kids appreciate the finer things in life! LOL!! Honestly for us the BEST thing about being DVC members is that even though my kids are older they still want to be with us. We've been going to WDW since they were young and they think of it as their second home, and as I've always joked, they think of Mickey and Minnie as family! A lot of our friends are envious of us because their kids don't want to be with Mom and Dad anymore. I think because we really have always had wonderful Disney vacations and memories it has made us closer as a family. I know this sounds "sappy", but Walt was right. It really is a place where everyone, regardless of age, can be together and have a good time. As far as the rooms go, yes my kids LOVE having their own room and bathroom, but this does not stop us from staying in other resorts. One of our long time favs is the Poly and we always manage at least one stay there a year, but I have to say, as soon as they get into our beloved OKW the kids go straight to their room and take over. My daughter takes over the entire bathroom vanity (which she just adores) and my son gets the little sink outside the bathroom which he thinks is great. SOOOO everyone is happy! Oh and one last thing, as another poster said, we just took our second cruise this past summer and I think THAT really spoiled them!!

Have fun, congrats on the baby and believe me you will have wonderful vacations and memories ahead of you!!!

My kids were spoiled before DVC. DVC just moved them up the "snob ladder" a couple rungs. :p

Actually, I'm hoping that things like DVC motivate my kids to do well in school and get good jobs so they can afford things like this.

Hey, I can hope, right?

From our perspective. While I must admit DVC has spoiled "me" (although I am grateful) my 12y/o DD loves to go to other places like Virginia Beach, we also love to camp.

She recently (since your from the area) went to the Topsfield Fair and had a blast. So I guess she does like to do other things still.... although DH & I won't step foot near them (she went with her Grandparents).

She also claims to miss All Star Music resort (as that was where we stayed prior to DVC). Funny thing is while I don't mind ASMu, I can't get my DH near the place anymore.

It spoiled the parents, not the child.

Congrats on the BWV contract (that one is my fave)!

Most definately yes!!! Not only will the kids be spoiled by the size of the rooms, but so are the parents. We just bought a 39ft camper because we are so use to having a lot of room with Dvc, we couldn't think of hanging out in something smaller. By the way, if you are traveling down a road in NC and see trashcans knocked down all over the street, we probably just drove through!!! :D

You mean there are other vacations and places?????? LOL J/K
Not sure about your kids but it sure has spoiled me!
