Will DH hate Ohana?

We have ADRs for Ohana when we are staying at the Poly in May. My husband looked it up in The Unofficial Guide and, after reading about the coconut races and other kids activities, is not sure he wants to have dinner there. We are 6 adults - parents with 2 adult children and their boyfriends. One of the reasons I picked it was that we have 2 vegans in our party and though Chef TJ is no longer there, it was recommended for vegan diners. I've also seen many excellent reviews and wanted to try it myself, especially since we are not doing the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show this trip. Our reservations are not until 8:30 PM, which DH thought might make a difference. Would there be a chance that we could sit away from all the activity or would there be less of it because it is later in the evening?? I was thrilled to even GET this ADR, but now I'm not so sure. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

We have been there twice, and both times we were away from the action and didnt notice all the hollapaloo that goes on with coconut racers etc. We normally make our ressies for later in the evening.

The action definately centers around the main room, so being seated on the other side will help. The races aren't that often... I went last year with 5 adult women and they all loved it and asked to book there again this trip.

Vegans and Ohana? Those don't seem to go together at all. The price of that meal is because of the MEAT. They can't even eat the standard dessert.

I'd try to find out from the restaurant how they work with vegans currently - not from when the guidebook was written.

I personally did not like my experience at Ohana at all. Cold food, fatty undercooked beef, horrific service, and annoying entertainment (since I was not there with kids). I understand others love it, but I won't be back.

The night we went, there was someone singing loudly and rather poorly for most of our meal (interrupted only by the coconut races). We didn't like the food or the entertainment. IMO, there are much better places to eat for the price.

Yes--it's very annoying, even if you do get a seat away from the "main room". We still had to endure the children's parade all through the restaurant, not to mention the shrieking of the lady MC who's voice could probably be heard over in the MK:)
The food isn't all that great either, although I have no information as to how it would be for vegans.

My DH didnt like Ohana dinner at all...too noisy, too many kids running around (yes I know this is supposed to happen but he forgets that I told him that ;)) and he didnt like the food at all.

It didnt help matters much that we had to wait an hour past our ressie time or our server was a ditz and kept forgetting about us....

We went this past August without kids and we enjoyed it. If it's at a later time there will be less kids there. The kids "entertainment" didn't really bother us.

The children's games and entertainment ends at 9:30. You probably won't be seated till at least 9 anyway.

The maraca parade is so incredibly loud that yes, your husband will probably have a problem with it if he is there while it is going on, no matter where you are sitting. The other activities are not quite but almost as loud.

Have been there with a vegan. The special vegan food was great and a lot better than the regular menu items. But that was back when TJ worked there.

We (DH and I) went to Ohana last April with my dad, 2 sisters, 2 brother is laws, and 2 nephews. We were seated by windows in a corner on the other side of the restaurant from all the activities. My dad commented about the awfully loud lady singing but laughed about it. She came up to him when she was making her rounds around the place. Other than that, everyone loved it. My BIL who is not a big crowd and disney person LOVED it. It was his favorite meal and talked about it the entire trip. He kept asking if we could go back every night for dinner. DH and I are going back for on our anniversary trip. :goodvibes

Your husband sounds alot like my FIL. We went close to Christmas. He did not enjoy the singer or the kids games. But, he loved the food! He can be very picky, but was happy and wants to go back. The meat skewers were a big hit, but he likes it very well down. Our server offered and had no problem getting him so well done several times. Have a great time!

O'hana is the one Disney restaurant both DH and I agree we will never return to. All of the food was bland and/or way too overdone and dry.

The parade was also a terrible experience for us. They seated DH and I at a small table right next to the parade path. It was extremely loud the entire time so DH and I couldn't even carry on a conversation about the horrible food. Then this one young girl kept hitting our table with her maraca:sad2:. Lets just say there are not enough lapu lapus in the world to get either of us to go back there.
