Will anyone be taking kids on holiday in school time

not happy about this new ruling it apparently will cost us £60 per child to take them out of school with our local authority, it's simples if they don't let us do it due to the cost in non term time to go then I won't help out with fundraising and as for doing homework when they are away thats a big no no my daughter gets over 3 lots a week as it is!! and she is only 6, if she was struggling in school I wouldn't do it but she is towards the top of her class so there shouldn't be a problem I hope or it will get messy lol

We are planning a trip to WDW in Easter 2014 - total surprise for our 8 year old son - we are taking him out of school for six days I think as tagging it onto Easter school holidays. Don't think his school will be very happy but tough as we took him two years ago to WDW and he learnt so much - we bought him a Guide to the Magic Kids Book and filled it in every night - it is fantastic to look back on.

We aren;t telling him till Christmas morning - when we have a card from mickey and a countdown chain - cannot wait to see his face.

What's the Guide to the Magic book? Would it be something my 4yr old DD could do, or is it for older children?

And just so people know, the money from fines goes to the government, not the school.

You can see a sneak preview. It's an amazing book and I think it would be just fine for a four year old. There are autograph pages and stickers and all sorts of things in there. To save on the big cost of shipping it here, he will ship to your Disney resort if you prefer Although I wanted mine as part of the surprise announcement pack and for DD to read on the plane (but she was 8 so maybe not such a big deal to have in advance for a 4 year old)

Money well spent and although she has just turned 11, she actually asked me a couple of weeks ago if we could order another one next year

If it wasn't for the fact my MS is getting worse and I want to make one dream come true for him, I wouldn't be pulling him out of school for 10 days to go on holiday I can assure you. He doesn't get much of a break from school either because all his holidays (literally every half term and every week of the summer holidays) is eaten up with social skills sessions or speech therapy or CAMHS appointments not to mention my hospital appointments. I'm not saying no other kids have it as bad as he does but I do feel sorry for him when he sees his mates out playing or has to miss a friend's birthday party etc. Just for once I want him to be truly happy. Disney here we come!! 18 days and counting! Woo-woo!

I do understand how you feel as my son also has autism and I have just spent the last 3 months in hospital or having nurses come out to me twice a day every day to administer drugs into my picc line!
My kids had spent non of the summer holiday with me as I was too sick!
So I'm taking my boys out to spend quality time with them, and I will do it again in May as they have no idea if treatment is working or will keep it away and so told us to prepare for worst case!
BUT......
Even if this had not happened I would still of took my boys out of school like I have done every/every other yr as it did me no harm growing up and dh is military and a instructor position at the moment which means he can only take time off when he isn't running a course and each course is 16 wks long and they do prep work In between that its rare to have times off I. Summer.

I have to ask - is that 3 lots of written work or reading/spellings?

Our DD is 5 and has reading everyday though out reception and carried on in to year 1. She also has weekly spellings which have a worksheet to do as well as the words to learn and then a weekly piece of written work at the weekend.

I enjoy spending the time with her doing this as I get to see her progressing too I also spend time most days throughout the summer holidays with her doing reading, writing or maths. She is young and learnt skills are soon forgotten if not used all the time.

The Guide to the Magic book for kids is well worth it - your 4 year old might not be able to complete it themselves but you rate all the attractions and give them thumbs up or down. My son was 6 when we went to WDW and he loved filling it in (with help from mammy) every night. Definitely a good souvenir and keepsake from a trip.

On another point I have spoke to the Education officer in our area and they won;t fine you for 10 days or less of keeping your child off school - this will be marked down as unauthorised absence - but you cannot do anything about this.

Yes, fines only occur if you go over the allocated 10 days of absence.

Due to flights we kept the kids off the last 2 days of term - and I appreciate it may vary from area to area but really ours do not do very much if anything of educational value those days.

Next year they will have the last week of term and 2 days of the week before off as we are going for 3 weeks.

At one time I would have never taken the kids out of school for a holiday but things change and sometimes you realise that you might not get these chances to do this again. And sometimes making memories are more important (yes!) than a week of school once in a lifetime ( to me anyway)
