We are staying at the Wilderness Lodge for 4 days nex month 12/3-12/6, I would like to hear all your tips and suggestions on what to make sure we see while staying there.

Thanks

Our first stay at the WL is booked for June, 2008. I've been reading up on the Wilderness Lodge and I have collected a few tips.

Be sure to rub Humphrey the Bear's nose so your trip will go well.

You can watch the Electrical Water Parade from the WL beach.

Sign up to be the Flag family. One family per day is selected to go up to the rooftop and raise the flags for the day.

There are free lodge tours on certain days of the week.

I am sure WL veterans are gonna chime in here soon!

We have stayed there a few times, and the only "true" secret that I found was a hidden Mickey, in the main lobby.
:)

We have stayed at WL a few times and we LOVE it at that time of year!! My kids love the Hidden Mickey scavenger hunt, the geyser that spouts every hour during the day, the pool and slide, and watching the EWP from the beach every night. Don't forget to get a warm drink and sit by the fireplace in the lobby and soak up the atmosphere with the holiday lights and music (very relaxing). WCC is also a lot of fun. We have had both breakfast and dinner there and have enjoyed both. It is such a warm and cozy resort, especially at that time of year. It is beautiful over the holidays!

As for the flag family, we did it once and it is awesome! However, it fills up fast and you usually have to be staying there for several days to be able to get in for a day at the end of your stay. The year we did it we were there for 8 nights and the only day available was our last day, the day we checked out. It is worth a try though. Just ask as soon as you get there for check-in, and don't forget your camera.

Also, depending on your children's ages, the campfire and movie at Fort Wilderness is just a short boat ride from WL. It is free and you can purchase a small smore making package complete with wooden dowel for roasting the marshmallows for around $5.00. They have the campfire and a sing-a-long, Chip & Dale come out and dance with the children and after that they show a movie outside. It is a fun thing to do.

Have a great trip and enjoy WL! It is our favorite resort, especially at that time of year.

I recommend going up the stairs over by WCC. There's a little nook with comfy couches and a fire place...Keep walking around on that floor, we found some nice rocking chairs that overlooked the lobby. It was so quiet up there!

Cycling to Fort Wilderness is fun. We also enjoy renting the speedboats and pontoon boat.

Last time we were there a CM told me you can actually take your own picnic on board so long as the driver doesn't drink alcohol. This sounds like a lot of fun and we plan to have a picnic on the pontoon boat next time.

Also - they are now doing segway tours at fort wilderness for age 16+, which sounds like a lot of fun.

Can you describe the speedboats for me, please? We can't decide what kind of boat to rent. My husband just said "fast". Also, do you remember the cost?

Hi the speedboats are small white boats that seat two people, they are good fun, as are the pontoon boats - think they seat about ten. They definitely go fast enough for the size of the lake.

I don't remember the cost but it can't have been too awful as we rented them a few times. The last time we were there, I know there were different offers on where you got a better deal for using them more times. There was also a length of stay package but we didn't know about it until the last day of our trip. I really hope it is offered next time.

The boats are really a blast because as well as using them round WL and FW area, you can also go thru that narrow part near the contemp (the bit that says no wake, and use them in the other lake near MK.

I haven't checked yet but this site has pricing for a lot of stuff if you go to the front page. And if you have no luck there, allears.net may also have prices.

Some of my fave things....

#1 - There are *tons* of hidden Mickeys at WL. You can ask at the desk or concierge area for a list.

#2 - Try to catch the Electric Light Parade from the beach and/or seeing the MK fireworks.

#3 - If you have small children, there is a Lincoln Log table outside of the WCC which is a huge hit.

#4 - Try to carve out some time to just sit in the middle of the large lobby. It's such a wonderful place to people watch and/or relax. I love to just check out the decor.

#5 - My boys love to ring the bells outside the arcade on their way to the bus stops.

#6 - Again, if you have kids, let them watch classic cartoons in the TV area near the front of the lodge. It's a cute, comfy place for kids and my boys love the small rockers.

Have a wonderful time. Our family loves WL and I hope yours will, too. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

One afternoon we were trying to figure out the hidden Mickey clues and locate them and not doing very well, but laughing because it can't be that hard- right?? (4 girls age 20 to 70 ) and a wonderful man in the lobby, can't remember his title ,but in charge of front desk staff, saw us and took us on a tour and gave us hints to find about 6 of the hidden mickeys. It was so nice and one of my mom's favorite memories.

Explore all the floors above the lobby.....lots of hidden nooks
and crannies to explore.

- I made a point of going down stairs at night after the kids were asleep and my wife was unwinding in the room, to read the newspaper (given to each room free in the morning) in front of the fireplace in the main lobby.

- As someone else mentioned, there is a second fireplace/ sitting area just above the entry. Next to that is an area with a desk and chairs. We actually had our daughter do her homework during the afternoons at this desk, as it was a change of pace from staying in the room to do it, and even though it was overlooking the main lobby, it was not very distracting.

- While checking in, have the kids take advantage of the cartoons playing behind the bell services desk. It will keep them entertained, and not running wild while you take care of business - plus you can keep an eye on them.

- There is an expansive terrace overlooking the parking lot (also on the second floor above the entry. This is another nice place for kids to let off steam without going into the main lobby, or out to the pool area.

- There is also another lesser used balcony on the opposite side that overlooks the courtyard area, and has a decent view of the lake.

- Even if you are not eating at Artist Point, take some time to go into the main space and look up into the high ceiling. Next, find the corridors above that look into Artist Point, and look through the windows into the top of the same space.

- Look for the hedge animals out near the main entrance.

- Take advantage of the pool at the Villas if the other pool seems too crowded. This was not the case for us, but I know that others have done so.

- Have the kids do the Duck Races just above the pool where the inlet is. Although they have changed the location, and made the course smaller, this is still fun.

- Enjoy the pool and the families that are there. This is probably the same at any of the resorts, but our family had fun with other families that we met there. During the week, we would see many of the same people and our kids would play with each other and it was very nice. Also, the lifeguards would have games going on in the 36" depth water every so often which added to the close community feel.

- Take one of the surrey bikes to Fort Wilderness Campground. We saw some baby deer along the way, and then saw nice white ponnies (one of the cm's let us pet one in the stable) at the campground. There's plenty of time to do all of this in the initial 1/2 hour or 45 minute rental period, plus the ride is nice.

- All of the rental boats (pontoon and racers), have 9 h.p. engines. While this may not seem fast, it is for the little boats.

- As someone else mentioned, the Chip and Dale sing-along is well worth the time. We enjoyed this very much, as the crowds are not huge, and the atmosphere is great.
