Can anyone tell me how they liked their stay at the Wilderness Cabins? Good points. Bad points. I will be going to Disney with myself, wife, mother-in-law, DD (5) and DS (3 and 1). I thought this would be a good place to stay, but I have to convince my wife. Help!!!

love the murphy bed - bad point only one bathroom!

the bed in the bedroom is either a double (full) or a queen - there are bunk beds, too.

in the livingroom is the murphy bed - full.

love the outside. nice to be able to go out the front door and be outside not in hotel corridor.

there is a ton of stuff to do here. You could have a good time and not go to the parks.

the bus drivers are very funny.... :earboy2:

We used the cabins on one of our recent "family trips" to Disney...We had 2 cabins - one for my sister and her husband and 2 kids and one for my parents, sister, and myself (all adults). We had more than enough room for all of us and were very happy with the cabin layout. I agree with the previous poster about the one bathroom...that was the only downside....

My sister used the kitchen facilities more than we did because of her kids but it was very convenient for her. Also, we liked the fact that we could bring "hors d'oerves" in a cooler from home (we are within driving distance) and come back from the parks in the afternoon for our own "happy hour" to wind down before our evening activities. We also did breakfast in the room (mostly left over hors d'oerves...lol).

One thing I would HIGHLY recommend would be renting a golf cart to get around the campground...Fort Wilderness is a HUGE property with tons to do...I'm sorry we didn't have more time to take advantage of the activities there...and that golf cart came in handy BIG time at the end of the day when we were coming back from the MK with two young sleepy children!!

Enjoy! It is a really special place!!

The cabins are really nice. We enjoy just sitting out in the evening on the deck and people watching. Not to mention that FW is a wonderful resort with soooo much to do. The resort is rather large and alot of people do like the golf carts but we have gotten along fine with the bus system.

FW is truly a hidden treasure at WDW.
You might want to post your question on the Caming at Disney forum. THey are full of information on the resort and the cabins.

You might try this web page. He has a lot of information about fort wilderness. http://fly.hiwaay.net/~jlspence/

We have both camped and stayed in the cabins and love both. Please take the time to enjoy all the amenities that the Fort has to offer. If you decide to rent a golf cart, (they are a lot of fun), remember to reserve it ahead of time. The chances of getting one at the last minute are slim, especially if you are going at a busy time of year. It is a much more relaxed atmosphere than most places. Your kids will love it. Our kids, now 20 and 15 still insist on staying here for all our trips.

The cabins are nice, but very small. They are, however, much better than a motel room. Fort Wilderness is very nice and BIG. The golf cart adds a MAJOR expense to staying there. With the exception of the boat to MK, it is much like staying off property. In fact, staying off property would be a whole lot cheaper and you would get a much bigger place to stay!

I see you have young kids, so I think that you would probably enjoy the Wilderness cabin's kitchen for a do-it-yourself early morning breakfast. My problem with the cabins was that we like to stay at Pleasure Island (we don't have kids) 'til 2 am closing then grabbing late, late night snack at everyone's favorite 2 am stop, McDonalds, at Downtown Disney for the bus ride back to Fort Wilderness. The internal buses at Fort Wilderness (a different system than the regular Disney buses) don't run all night so if you plan on leaving the kids and having a late night out, rent the golf cart for the trip back to your cabin or you'll have to get a ride from security back.

We've stayed in the cabins. They are much larger than a regular room in a resort, you get a kitchen, and you can park (if you have a car) right next to your cabin.

However, transportation is an issue. Depending on where your cabin is, you need to take a bus to boat lauch for MK or CR. You can be quite a ways from the pool, dining hall, and store. You feel like you are staying in a home in neighborhood more than a resort at WDW. There are reasons people spend a good deal extra for the golf carts...

If you like peace and quiet at the end of a long day, or if you want more room--you'll love them. If you really dislike waiting for buses, or want to be in the middle of the magic--you might want to reconsider.

This is really good information...do you know if there is room to park your car near a bus stop? (so that we don't have to rent golf carts?)

Thanks!

When you stay at the Ft. Wilderness Cabins are you allowed to park your car at the cabin or do you have to park far away and transport your luggage to the cabin by golf carte?

Each cabin has a small driveway or parking pad right at your cabin where you leave your car. Unless you are at the back of one of the large loops it is a very short walk to one of the many bus stops. The front parking lot or your cabin is the only place you may park except for 15. min at the Meadows Trading post. We find it more convenient to drive ourselfs everywhere except MK.

We will be getting to FW probably between 9-10 p.m., does anyone know what we should do as far as the "quiet" rule? I know many campgrounds have this, where you have to be quiet when you drive in, etc..
Does anyone recoommend a certain cabin for its closeness to everything?
Thank you!!
D.D.

the bus stops are close to the cabins.

here is a map

I liked 2100 - but 2500 would be fine too.

forgot the bus system is complicated - some of the theme park buses will be in the outpost - others will be in settlement - make sure you understand which is which and how to get what you want before you leave your room.

too many times FW guests were at the outpost bus stop trying to get to the MK - only at the settlement.

this system is surpose to be less confusing - I think it is more.

ask over on the campground program - understanding this system before you leave will be a GREAT help.

Quiet time at FW is 10 pm to 7 am, but since the buses run till 2 am don't worry about any noise your vehicle will make. And since fireworks often go off at 10 pm quiet time really starts later.

1. So you can park your car at the cabin, and drive it to the parks? I thought you could only drive your car in and out when you checked in or out? (from what I read)?

2. For a girls wdw only do you feel "safe" out there? Is it really the wilderness or disney? Looks like a good place for fun, nice rooms, lots of space, BUT not sure if we would feel safe or comfortable out there.

Thanks, we often thought about FW-cabins they are usually such a good buy, but usually change our minds for some reason.

We're staying at a cabin for the 2nd time in March. The 1st time our kids were 2 and 8 mos - this time they're 6, 5 and 1 so we plan to take more advantage of the activities at FW. We felt completely safe - its not like you're in the middle of nowhere - its just a little wooded. I think FW is a great option for more space and a really pretty resort. For us, the big drawback is it doesn't have a nice themed pool like alot of the resorts. But, we'll probably spend some time at Typhoon Lagoon to make up for it. You can park 1 car at your cabin and come and go as you please. This time we're renting a golf cart that we can use to get to the launch for MK & I think it goes to WL too. That way we don't have to bother with the bus. For the other parks we'll just use our car - but remember you don't have to pay to park as a WDW resort guest. Also you can rent a golf cart up to 1 year in advance by calling the bike barn at FW directly. You give them your credit card # but you have 24 hrs in advance to cancel. That way if you plan your itinerary as your trip is closer you can cancel the cart for days you don't think you'll need it. Hope this helps!

We stayed at Ft Wilderness last year during December - we had a great time!
Our previous stays were at deluxe hotels and we enjoyed this just as much, maybe even more. We rented a golf cart (this is must!) which my son (4) loved! Being able to park your car right out front was great, we liked the extra room, the option of using the kitchen was nice and it didnt cost near as much as a lagoon view conc. room at the poly! I was nervous at first, but my fears were completely unfounded - we found the magic!

With three young children and a MIL, I think the cabins may be a good option for you. We stayed there our last trip (a weekend jaunt in 2003) and found them not to fit our family, but our children are college age, teen and 10. Quite frankly, this is because we've been several times and are spoiled by the transportation and pools at the deluxe resorts. I'm not willing to pay $40 a day for a golf cart -- I would rather take that $40, add it what I'm paying each day and stay at the Yacht Club!

We found the cabins themselves to be very nice, and having a kitchen and multiple rooms is great. The bedroom is very small -- almost no floor space. I'm not positive there's room for a crib.

Someone said they were arriving late. Keep in mind that the restaurant and store at Fort Wilderness close earlier than at other resorts. We went to Epcot first, then came over and checked in around 10. We thought we would go to the Trading Post and pick up something for dinner and found both it and Trails End restaurant already closed. Ended up going to the Contemporary.

:earseek: We just came back from Disney. The fort wilderness cabins was wonderful it was very clean. We have gone seven times and we have always stayed there. It was close to the boat,& stores it was great, safe, and fun. And all of us loved the carts they offer :earboy2:
