Why wouldn't you feed your child breakfast?

I helped accompany 8 first-grade girls to an International Fair at a local Children's Museum this weekend. A few of them started asking about lunch at 9 AM. I teasingly asked what they had for breakfast for them to be hungry so early and learned they had not eaten at all. Out of 8 girls, 3 came on an empty stomach. I finally asked one WHY she had not eaten and she said "We didn't have time." Is this a valid reason to send your young daughter to an all-day event without breakfast when you don't know when they will have lunch?

My kids don't want to eat breakfast early in the morning when they leave the house -- I always give them something to eat later though, usually a piece of fruit or something to tie them over until lunch.

I have a better chance of getting water of a rock then I do getting my daughter to eat breakfast

That's what milk and cereal bars and pop tarts are for.... for those mornings when nothing is going right and there is no time to eat. At least this portable food can be eaten while driving to school. They aren't always needed... very rarely, actually, in my house... but I keep them in the pantry... just in case.

because even when you fix it they still won't eat it. I have tried every breakfast item known to man from cooking hot meals, instant oatmeal, frozen dinners, heat and eat sandwiches, pop tarts, cereal, power bars. They just won't eat. I fixed eggs and english muffins this am and nobody would eat except me. I have even handed them food as they walk out the door only to find it in the bushes later. I don't know what it is, but none of my kids will eat breakfast.

Ditto!! My dd is not a early b/fast eater. I'll cook her fav's, buy her fav cereal, cereal bars, etc. She just won't eat till she's up for a couple of hours.

Luckly, I can send b/fast with her to pre-school.

I have to tell my 5 year old to eat her breakfast about 5 times a morning. And it is right in front of her. She just doesn't eat much. I pack her lunch and when she gets home, there is a whole sandwich and crackers in it. I say "what did you eat"? She says "my fruit snacks". I pack her what she asks for hoping she'll eat something! I definitely don't have to worry about childhood obesity with her, she's 49" and 42 pounds! Of course, she would eat chips and candy all day if I would let her!

Now my 2 year old is another story, she'll pass her sister on the weight soon. She actually eats!

DS (6) goes to school many mornings w/out breakfast - he just doesn't want it. When they are testing @ school, I do try to get something in him. Just not having time, though, is no excuse - they could always eat something in the car - a sandwich, cheese toast, something.

My kids are the same way. I mention food to them in the mornings and they roll their eyes at me.

My girls are like me, they can't eat anything first thing in the morning. My oldest would grab something to eat on the bus, and my youngest eats breakfast at school instead.

When I was a kid I hardly ever at breakfast on school mornings. I would sneak back into bed after my mother got me up.

My kids will eat, but sometimes they just don't have time. They are like iguanas (that will grow to fit whatever cage you put them in) they will use up whatever amount of time you provide to get up, showered and get dressed. Then you hand them someting portable on the way out the door. They usually eat their lunches (although my son eats PB&J almost every day!- a whole other issue).

I started working part time at the elementary school this year, and one part of my job is supervising what goes on in the cafeteria. I can tell you right now that more than 50% of the kids throw their ENTIRE lunch away. Even the kids that buy lunch throw it away untouched. It is such a waste to see unopened milk cartons go right in the garbage. I've asked the kids why they are throwing them out, and most of the time they just say they aren't hungry or they don't like it. If kids don't want to eat, they aren't going to eat.

I can only get my kids to eat a breakfast snack. I can't eat in the morning (makes me queezy). My son, and usually my younger DD, will eat a chocolate chip muffin, a bag of cereal bites or (on a desperate day) some goldfish. My middle child is just not interested in food when she wakes up. I'm lucky if I can get 2 cereal bites in her or maybe a muffin. I don't worry too much about it because her snack time at school is around 9am. I pack her a piece of fruit (apple or banana) and a 4 0z juice box.

I should add...if my kids had a morning field trip or something unusual going on, I'd probably be a little more insistant that they eat something more substantial before school.

I usually cant get my 5 year old to eat breakfast on school mornings. Some days he will drink one of those drinkable yogurts, but for the most part he never wakes up enough to be hungry.

My DD isn't much of a breakfast eater either. Right now she's on an antibiotic for Strep so I make her eat something before she takes it. At most she'll eat a few spoonfuls of yogurt. That being said though, I always throw an extra snack in her lunch in case she's hungry during the morning at pre-k. It doesn't take much effort to put a granola bar in a kid's jacket before he/she goes out the door.

My 3 ds really dont want breakfast wither. DS 16 says no because he has a 1 hour 1 way bus ride and gets bus sick, and the other 2 usually dont want anything, maybe little ds will have something once in a while like fruit loops. Only on holidays and snow days they eat around 10 am etc. That is why we never do a character breakfast. I bring granola bars etc in the park and they have those, its only because they are doing so much walking etc, but we usually have an early lunch ps or counter service before the crowds, 11:45 at the latest.

My son has never liked traditional breakfast foods. I let him eat whatever he wants, as long as it's not candy LOL!

I always have the yogurt smoothies in the fridge, and cereal bars, Pop-Tarts, etc. he also likes fresh fruit. But he'll sometimes push off on those.

So I've gotten creative, waffles with ice cream, leftover pizza, bananas drizzled with chocolate or strawberry syrup, even Ramen Noodles. As long as he eats something I'm happy. He does have a large glass of milk, and sometimes he'll let me add Carnation Instant Breakfast to that.

I always make sure he has a granola bar in his backpack for mid-morning or later afternoon munchies.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with breakfast woes! My 2 youngest always look for cereal and milk while my 7 year old has more exoctic taste buds. We recently bought the Vita-Mix blender and evey morning she wants a smoothie...little does she know I always throw in some carrots and beets;) So she gets a most healty breakfast without even knowing it!

My oldest dd eats "lunch" or "dinner" items for breakfast.
She hates breakfast items for breakfast.

Younger dd wakes up and sits at the table. It is the first thing she does in the morning is EAT. She has done this since she was a baby.

Although I will admit both of them had chocolate cake for breakfast this morning.
