Why would you bring an infant to a casino?

We were at the Borgata (in Atlantic City) this past weekend and I was really surprised at the number of babies and small children there.

Why in the world would you bring an infant to a casino? :confused3

It isn't smoke-free and the noise level can be really high and I wouldn't want to expose my kid to that if I could help it.

I can maybe understand if it was during the summer months, at least you can take them to the beach, but in February?

I can't imagine after planning an adult getaway weekend having to deal with a crying kid in the next room or seated next to you in a restaurant. :headache:

Do casino resorts have the right to exclude kids under a certain age from staying there?

maybe they were eating at one of the restaurant there. I now the casino I go to don't allow kids to be at the games or the tables.

I don't have an issue with it. They did not allow the kids on the gaming floors right?

I have taken my kids to the casino to go to a restaurant here.

Borgata used to be fairly strict about no kids under 18, but like everything else it has been relaxed. I used to love to go there because of that. It always disturbs me to see kids at the casino hotels, kids are not allowed on the casino floor at all though.

I also hate to see kids in Vegas for the same reasons. I would've never bought my kids to Vegas before they were 21.

Children are not allowed on the gaming floor in Atlantic City. There are a million reasons they could be in the hotel. They may just be there for dinner, or to see a show, or they came to shop at the outlets, or they are staying there because there is an event in the area that they are attending. We are very close to A.C. lot's of folks I know use A.C. for a quick winter getaway. You can get cheap rooms during the week. They take the kids to use the pool.

Some things never change. I worked at a couple of casinos from the mid-80's to early 90's. The parents don't want to pay for a sitter so they bring the kids along. The kids can't stay on the casino floor with their parents, so they ditch them in the lobby. We'd have kids from babies on up lined up at the rails over looking the casino floor every weekend. Drove security nuts because the older kids were running wild, in and out of the game room, hanging over railings yelling for the parents to bring them more money, knocking over whoever got in their way. The little ones just sat and stared at the stairs down into the casino or cried for their parents. Casino wouldn't push the issue because they wanted the parent's money, unless it got to the point where the kids were really being abandoned. Several times the local cop stationed there would literally drag the parents off the floor, if the kids could point them out, or stand with the kids until somebody finally showed up to claim them. That only happened with younger kids who'd been left for at least 3 hours, they never did anything about the older elementary/tween/teens running around unless somebody got hurt.

We have taken our kids to our local casino resort a few times for dinner/dessert. They have a gigantic gingerbread village, wonderful Christmas decorations, shops with art by local artists, and performers (statues, guys on stilts, etc). We also brought our 15 yo foreign exchange student there in December.

I had no idea that this would disturb other people and didn't think I was exposing my children to anything inappropriate. We don't go near the gaming or smoking areas. :confused3

I suppose I would be be upset if the parents were drunk (our casino doesn't serve alcohol) and had a baby parked in a stroller right outside the smoking area while they were gambling, but that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Maybe it's a lucky baby...just rub his tummy and roll the dice.

There is no indoor smoking at the Borgata.

A lot of people bring their kids to Foxwoods. They walk around, go to the shops spend the weekend. They aren't taking them onto the casino floor. They do have movie theatres, bowling a huge game room.
I don't have a problem with it especially when it's cold, you can walk around for hours and see the sights.

Because they're an entitled, selfish idiot?

Here in IL, all of our casinos are smoke free

Kids are allowed in the lobby and restaurants but they are not allowed to enter the casino. They do try to discourage bringing children to the restaurants by not having a child's menu. Full price at the buffet on seafood night is almost $40 a piece and that includes kids. You'd be surprised how many kids are there. I thought for sure that the parents were using comps but I was shocked to see several families pulling out the cash to eat last time we were there.

They enforce the law that says that the police will be called for any child left unattended.

Ho Chunk in the WI Dell has a child care service.

Were they on the casino floor or just in the hotel?

I've brought my kids to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun

We took DD to Motor City casino to have dinner with my parents (they like the buffet). There were a surprising number of kids also having dinner. Of course, none of the kids are allowed in the gaming area, and I wouldn't have taken DD in there even if they were. But for dinner, I don't see the issue.

When the casinos first opened in Detroit, there were a number of times infants were found alone in cars outside the casino while mom and dad gambled away at 1am. At least the parents in Atlantic City took their kids with them. That's an improvement.

There were two young girls who died here at our local casino 2 summers ago when the parents left their 3 young children in the car in 100+ degree heat to go gambling.

We used to take our children to the Lake Tahoe area casinos because we stayed in those hotels for ski vacations. We did take them into the restaurants for dinner in the evenings but they were never close to the casino floors and we did not leave them in the room to go gamble--we strictly went to ski. We never took them to Las Vegas but plenty of parents do.

My in-laws live in Vegas, so every few trips i do take the kids down to the strip because we all go kind of batty sitting inside all day. If they didn't want children on the premises, they wouldn't have things like
  • Rainforest Cafe
    Build A Bear Workshop
    Spongebob 3-D
    Tournament of Kings
    Adventure Dome
    etc.

Does a casino resort have the right to exclude someone for being a pompous ******? Because those are way, WAY more annoying than infants.
:goodvibes

I wish they all were! We don't go very often but the smoke hits you when you walk in - no escaping it - even in the no smoking area. I hate that. Have to take a shower and wash our clothes as soon as we get home.
