Ive been mulling this one over for a while. And Ive read whats been posted on a couple of other threads. So I went back to the now inactive Debate Board and re-read a few debates that I participated in. Then out of the blue the answer came to me in a bolt of crystal clear understanding.
The problem was that people on the Debate Board routinely disagreed with my point of view. Despite the superior logic of my arguments, many on the debate board refused to acknowledge something that I have always known namely that I think I am right about everything.
Sure, I didnt always present very cohesive arguments and often my rebuttals were sorely lacking in substance. But in the absence of a defendable point of view, the power of my sophistry should have precluded anyone actually calling me on this.
If everyone could have just agreed with everything I wrote, we Debate Board refugees wouldnt be here now upsetting all the good people on the Community Board with our incessant bickering. By simply agreeing to agree with me, there would have been no need to squabble. Name calling would have become redundant. Ad Hominem attacks irrelevant.
Think how easy it would have been. Someone would post a debate topic, I would wade in with my opinion and everyone else would respond in a chorus of ITAs. Virtually no fuss and amazingly little muss. With that taken care of, maybe we could have gotten back to work and actually start earning our paychecks again.
