At times discounts are offered to those that have an Annual Pass to the parks. AP Discount

CRO is Disney's Central Reservations Operation which books their rooms.

We looked at the points requirement as a week, so we purchased that way. We now usually stretch that into 10-12 days with only 1 weekend stay in the middle. I think DVD made a mistake when they lowered the minimum point purchase price to less than the amount of points it would take for a whole week.

Man, I must not have looked at this as well as I thought when I bought into DVC, but the points on the weekends are crazy. I can stay 5 nights (sunday to Thursday) for the same points that it costs for Friday and Saturday night. I am thinking I am either going to be doing a lot of 5 night trips instead of 7 or I am going to be staying the Portifino Bay at Universal on Friday and Saturday nights. What does everyone do? My 150 points won't go far if I am paying 54 for a 2 bedroom at OKW on Friday and Saturday nights.

I'm a 150 point person myself. The only way to make it work is to pay cash elsewhere for the weekend nights for the most part, buy an add on or go every other year. The first year it usually works out by itself if you don't do Magical Beginnings.

My suspicions...it's a way for Disney to make a little more money. Look how many people pay cash in order to stretch their stays. Of course you people going to Universal aren't exactly with the program. Glad you brought it up because I'd love to do that just once.

Next year I'm thinking of doing the poly on points sun. - thurs. then jumping over to one of the all stars or a moderate for the weekend, but hadn't even considered you could stay in a DVC room for cash.

Just pointing this out incase you hadn't noticed but the point cost of a Poly garden view room is 33pts a night in value season(picked this season just as a comparision) equals 165 points

a one bedroom at BCV the same time of year is 12 points for a studio or 22 points for a 1 bdrm. Saving you either 105 points in a studio or 55 points for a one bedroom.

I realize that some people just love the resorts but to spend 5 nights on points at a resort when you could save points and stay at a dvc resort. I surely would pick the DVC resort....IMHO...

THat is exactly what we do and that was a mistake.

Just an fyi... there was a poll about a year ago on this board that showed overwhelmingly most people do NOT stay elsewhere on weekends. It's just part of the program and either too much hassle to move or the points are considered as a whole for the trip rather than day by day.

Obviously, there's nothing wrong with staying elsewhere on weekends, but considering the poll results it's a vocal minority who do it.

I suppose another option is to stay only *one* weekend night -- check in Sunday and out on Saturday, say. You wouldn't get the maximum number of Disney days, but you'd have one day pre-trip to pack and one day post-trip to rest up from your vacation before going back to work!

Dean, I think a long weekend would be OK if it didn't include Friday. I might go this fall on a Saturday, return on Tuesday or Wednesday. That's one weekend night, two or three weekday nights, which is about the same number of points per night as a full week would be.

The problem is that it was a poll of people who were sufficiently enamored of DVC to hang out on a board devoted to it. Only Disney knows for sure what their actual usage is for the weekends...points vs cash.

Was that this poll? http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=429722

Since it only had 70 votes, I don't know if it was overwhelming or not... Maybe we should run it again and be a bit more specific this time. It would be interesting to see if the same results come up again.

Thanks zurgswife (love the name!), I realize that. I want to treat the kids to some of that special poly magic once though! :)

After that it's DVC all the way (at least during the week or until we add on! <g>)

Isn't DVC great? You can work it however you want.

We have done every combination mentioned. Stay at another resort (Usually the Poly or AKL for us) for the first weekend and then DVC Sun-Thur. And US/IOA at the PBH or HRH or PBH then DVC or and this is especially true if we are having friends or family join us-we just stay put at DVC for the whole trip.

When its just the kids and I - we will book a studio at the BCV's for the first weekend just to relax and use the pool and then move into our 1 bedroom at the BWV's for the remainder of the trip.

So many ways to enjoy.:teeth:

We are generally your Sunday to Thursday (5 night) crowd as I would rather get an extra trip than 1 extra night.

I would say if the weekends were the same points, I would be trying to take many of those last minute flight deals. I am sure more people are available to fill rooms on weekends and thus the point difference.

The other thought, at some point, is to start staying weekends and just to think of it as whole week and spread the points over all the nights, so it doesn't hurt as much. If they were ever to adjust (aka lower) the weekend points, they would have to up the weekday points

I'm sure lots of people would do this - us included. Bet we'd still be staying at non-DVC resorts, though. If weekends cost the same number of points, they would be filled up long before the last minute flight deals came out! :TEETH:

This is what we do most of the time. We only stay off site if we want to visit other things in the area. When we do, we visit those on the weekends and save Disney for the weekdays.

We are coughing up the 99 points for a Saturday night stay in a two bedroom premier season at HHI (66 points for Friday, 33 points Sun-thursday) because airfare was HUGE if we left on Friday.....

still hurts, but I am sure the extra day will be it worth it.....::yes::

Glad to see I am not the only one, actually it's looks like most everyone moves on the weekends. I don't know why I didn't notice that when I bought in, I mean I knew it was more but I had no idea it was THAT much more. For instance a 2BR at OKW goes from 22 points to 54 on the weekends. I liked the Universal Hotels a lot so that is our most likely option.

The way I look at it, I am very happy the weekends are so high in points. Right now a week in Magic season at BCV is 134 points for a studio. That would be 19 points per night if the points were evenly spread out through the week. Currently a studio there in Magic season is 14 points on the weekdays.

I am glad you are happy, but if someone were renting points, (the easiest way for me to equate points and dollars) that's $190 per night for a studio. As much as I love DVC, I think it's somewhat of a stretch to suggest that the studios are worth nearly $200 per night.
