Why no monorail resort?

Up until recently, the ground between TTC and Contemporary was too unstable. The ground is still unstable, but construction techniques have advanced so that it may be possible to build there eventually. However, business isn't good enough to even consider it.

Note where they've added DVC properties recently: Less-than-superlative views at deluxe resorts. I think we'll see that continue, so in case of the Contemporary, there isn't a place where they wouldn't be better off building new, premium-view deluxe hotel room space instead of timeshare space. There actually isn't enough space anywhere near-enough to the Poly. I'm sure they'd never consider a timeshare at the Grand.

sorry you feel that way - for my taste I would much rather see Spaceship Earth than that stupid clown pool - but everyone is different - makes the world more fun!

if they built at the Contemporary - I think it would be where the wings are now - not a new space - kinda like the DI - which would be better for WDW - to fix up these rooms (the most unpopular rooms in any deluxe WDW hotel) or let DVC have them - DVC would tear them down and build a new DVC resort (like they are doing at DI shortly to be SS). these views are not that great now - in some of them - you see the parking lot. - we once had view of the people leaving the Cont - the views in the wings leave at lot to be desired. but for a DVC resort that I think would love a monrail connection as much as the members would - it would be a hit!

as far as a new resort on the monrail - there is space - between the Contemporary and the Ticket and Transportation. - It got cleared off once - is this the area that was not safe?

the hotel that was surpose to go between the Polyn and GF got cancelled - they built the wedding chapel instead. WDW knows a money winner when they see it.

1) Why put a monorail on/near DVC?
2) People will buy DVC without a monorail.
3) Without added value, a monorail is wasted money for WDW.
4) Once DVC is sold out, the monorail brings no extra income.

Hmmm... good points.

Some members think SS could be the last DVC resort. I think Disney would be walking away from millions of dollars. IMO, A monorail DVC resort would sell at a record pace with a higher point schedule.

I disagree - we are currently being charged for the WDW transportation in our fees - you have better believe WDW would charge an extra fee for the monrail.

WDW might think that a DVC resort on the monrail would be much more expensive - probably twice as much as OKW in annual fees - the price would probably be over a $100 a point - maybe even more (especially if they wait until after SS is completed) then probably $200 a point.

so they might not think that it would be that popular - I think they under estimate the power of a monrail DVC.

the point schedule would be bad too - where OKW is 8 points Sun- thurs for a studio - this to made it pay for WDW and DVC would have to be at least 20 points Sun-thurs (if not more).

would you still buy here and/or stay here?

I think Disney would keep in mind the room rates of the current monorail resorts. They have to sit down with potential customers and show them savings.

I could be wrong, but I think the "operating cost" of the monorail is not that high (The construction cost is very high). One monorail train might equal 9 buses (?). Nine individual bus powerplants with nine employee drivers traveling in stop and go traffic can not compare to one efficient monorail driver controlling one powerplant.

The monorail supports only wear from the monorail use. The Disney roadways see wear and tear from everything with wheels. Anyway, I agree with TheRustyScupper point of " People will buy DVC without a monorail".

Me too, but I wasn't talking about my own personal taste.

Some of which have incredible lake views, that they'd be more likely to give over to new hotel room space, not to timeshares. That's all I was saying.

This is the unstable ground. It would cost hundreds of millions to stablize this. Again, with the great views from there, they could build some great super-deluxe hotel room space.

Brian,

Do you know for a fact that it would cost "hundreds of millions to stablize," or are you just speculating?

There are plenty of engineers in Florida who know how to design appropriate foundations for various types of land in Florida. Of course, deeper footings cost more to build.

I agree that there are "great views from there," such as views into the Seven Seas Lagoon, toward the towers of Cinderalla Castle. If the demand develops, Disney is much more likely to develop a deluxe or luxury resort on that site, not DVC timeshare condos. But DVC timeshare condos could be part of the total plan in the tradition of BWI and BWV.

I'm basing that on what it took to stabilize similarly unstable ground here in MA.

This isn't normal Florida instability. There is serious likelihood of sinkholes in that area.

I'm not sure there is enough room on that spit of land for both and all the other amenities necessary.

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing:

Who Wants to be a Millionaire 4 nights a week?
More Disney Stores anyone?
Pop (Century) up a few more hotel rooms, please
Build a few more theme parks...

DVC is successful---Now....so were all the things I mentioned before over expansion strangled the geese laying the golden eggs....

For every DVC member buying at the new monorail resort that is one less family not paying cash at the monorail resorts...which are doing fine, thank you..(except maybe the Contemporary)

Thus the idea of a DVC at the Contemporary is the only likely possibility-but I would think selling cash rooms for the GF and the Poly would still be a better way to market that area than to go the timeshare route...

Paul
