Why is UY important?

I tried to explain why UY is important to someone interested in DVC the other day and I didn't do a very good job. Maybe I don't understand it as well as I thought I did.

Would anyone like to explain it to me so I can pass the info on correctly?

I think that UY is important because of the banking deadline. It does depend on how many trips you make and if you have a block of time of the year that you're not likely to go to WDW to use your points. In my case, my UY is March and I had never gone to WDW in February or January, so when the banking deadline was December, I thought I was happy as a clam. There always was that time when I wouldn't be in jeopardy of losing points because of a cancelled reservation with limited time to use the points.

Now that the banking deadline for me is the end of October, that's not as good because we regularly travel to WDW in December. In fact, I have over 300 points worth of vacations scheduled after my banking deadline this year. I do not like the way the "simplification of banking rules" affected my membership!

For most people, I don't think the assignment of a Use Year is terribly important.

It really only matters if people vacation ONLY during a specific time of the year and intend to keep doing so over the next 40 years. And beyond that, it matters only in relation to late cancellations.

I'd be surprised if there were a great number of people who have been burned by having a Use Year that might be considered "bad" in relation to their vacation habits.

The important issue for us with respect to UY is cancellations:

If you cancel a DVC ressie less than 4 months before your UY ends, you can't bank the current UY points returned to you - which is part of the "4 month rule" for banking. In this case, you have to make a ressie for sometime before your UY ends or lose your points.

Of course, this only helps if you know when travel throughout the year - like we do.

We have an April use year, and now hold our breath on the Feb vacations we take during President's week (DH is a teacher, and that's one of our options). We are thinking of Vero Beach next February, and we could probably send some of our adult children down if it fell through and we could get space in DVC before March 31, but it's challenging to say the least.
