Why is pomegranate juice so expensive?

I've heard it's practically "miracle juice" so I figured I would try it. I had to go and drop a glass bottle of it the other day! $7.50 down the drain. Anyways, anyone know why it's so expensive? The bottle wasn't even half a gallon! Next time I'll buy the plastic container

(And not only did I drop it, I "launched" the bag it was in and cause a big mess in a store  )

I think part of it is because of the manufacturing process as it takes many fruit to make juice, but I also think it's part of the marketing of its high antioxidant properties, the price of doing business, and the price of what the market will bear. I pay about $3.50 a bottle and it seems like I am drinking the fountain of youth. lol

This is what I read:

Over the past five years, POM Wonderful planted thousands of pomegranate trees in the San Joaquin Valley, doubling the commercial market's size. It funded medical research at UCLA and launched a marketing campaign hinging on the fruit's benefits. And it purchased development rights to the method it uses to extract and process the juice, giving it control of production

"They've single-handedly created the market for pomegranate juice in the United States," said Gary Hemphill, managing director of New York-based Beverage Marketing Corp., which tracks juice marketing and sales.
.

:confused3

I don't know about marketing driving up the price. My DD found it when her class was studying Ancient Greece. They had a food day, and brought in pomegranates and the juice. She was the only one who ate/drank it, and she fell in love with it. This was about 3 years ago, and I could only find the juice one place. The small bottle (about12 ounces) was 1.99, and the 30 ounce bottle was 3.99. So assuming you had a 1/2 gallon size, it sounds like the price is about the same. I just think it's not something widely grown in the US, so supply/demand drives the cost high.

If your area has a Sams Club, give them a call. I'm pretty sure I have seen it at ours. If so their bulk prices should be cheaper.

We love pomegranite juice! It makes wonderful jelly! And it's so easy to do with the juice from Costco or Sam's Club! Yummy! My pantry shelves are stocked with jelly as we speak. I even made enough in December to give to our neighbors as Christmas gifts!
