Why is it always over so fast? Vacation people, vacation!

I'm so glad that you posted the link to your trip report. Now I gotta go back and read. Be back to post soon.

Chapter Nine: Oh, boooooo. It’s our last day!

The worst part of vacation is the last day. And, as always, it went by way too fast.

Well, since it is our last day, we certainly want to make the best of it. Up and out early for an EMH morning at Hollywood and then in the late afternoon back to Magic Kingdom. As is our tradition, we do MK the very first thing, and the very last.

We decided to drive this time so as not to waste any time waiting on buses. Of course, I had to promise to pick up the parking fee … tight wad DH. Once we made it to the park, through the bag check and into the park, we skeedaddled towards the Toy Story Mania first thing. Of course, so was everyone else. Literally not one single person was headed anywhere else. Luckily there were not many people. Made for some good shots of Big Blue.

This one was taken later in the day when the “crowds” picked up.

aIMGP6453.jpg

When we got to TSM, I jumped in line at the fastpass kiosks while Leo headed to the regular line. We have never done the regular line at TSM before, but since the line was so short, we decided to stand in the regular line and grab fastpasses for later.

The line was moving much faster than we expected, so Leo had to hang back a bit and let people go around him at the door. With fastpasses in hand, I jumped the railing where Leo was waiting for me and boy did we get some dirty looks and snide comments! I didn’t realize having someone hold a place in line was such a Disney sin. I guess I won’t be doing that again any time soon. Sheesh.

aIMGP6562.jpg

Anyway, we made it up to Mr. Potato Head, which we had never seen before since we always used the fast pass line. He was just too cool. So, of course, I had to stop and take photos. Now, when I do this, I never mind people going around me since I would be holding up the line. However, this time, I think the people behind us took a little too much pleasure in diving around us.

aIMGP6412.jpg

On the way through the queu, I was so enthralled with the “toys.” They made me all nostalgic: Shoots and Ladders, slinkies, Little Golden Books, finger paints and Tinker Toys. I can even still smell that paper and paint smell from my kindergarten finger painting corner.

We made it up front and headed out to play. Of course, I won … all three times we rode. When we went back for our fast pass time, we decided to grab another set of fast passes for later since there was still a low crowd. Three times in one morning aint too bad … the ride people, the ride.

aIMGP6467.jpg

I don’t know of any secrets to this one, other than popping the “gun” as fast as you possibly can and not worry about aiming.

Off we go to hit some of our fave classics like the Great Movie Ride and the Back Lot Tour. I decided to try and get the very back of the trains this time so I can watch out the back as we go through. Got some unusual shots that way on both rides.

I want this in my front yard!

aIMGP6563.jpg

Hitting some of the shows was next on our agenda. We went to see Indy and then over to catch the Lights, Motor, Action. While waiting for the car show to start, I went all the way up to the very top of the bleachers to watch the earthquake canyon from the Back Lot Tour. If you have never done this, it is a great angle to watch it.

aIMGP6490.jpg

aIMGP6481.jpg

While I was up there waiting, I looked down to see a half-a-Herbie driving by below me.

aIMGP6473.jpg

Some show shots.

aIMGP6488.jpg

Some Indy photos. Now, if you want a tip for getting the best seats in the house: hang back until they “move the audience.” Once they ask everyone to slide to their right/left, that will open up seats all the way up front. Of course, you may be sitting behind each other instead of side-by-side, but you can get front row seats (or close to it) this way. We found this out by accident one time because we got there late. So we do it all the time now.

aIMGP6536.jpg

This is one of the hardest shows for me to take photos of because of the severe back lighting from the shadows in the front half of the “stage” and the bright sun on the back half. It wouldn’t be so bad if my flash reached that far, but it doesn’t. And I doubt they would let me post some remote fill flashes up there … not that I could afford that set-up.

aIMGP6530.jpg

Between the shows, we decided to grab lunch. We wanted to eat at the Starring Rolls sandwich shop but it is across on the other side of the park. Since we didn’t have the time (or the energy) to go all the way over there and back before show time, we decided to eat at the CS near the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. Too bad too because I have heard the sandwiches there are phenomenal.

Food porn:

aIMGP6495.jpg

The grilled turkey and cheese was pretty good though. And the free water here was served in the small cups. Unusual. But I can’t kick for the price.

After lunch and Indy, we decided to wander the park a bit before calling it a day and heading back to MK. Here are a few photos I took along the way.

aIMGP6460.jpg

Leo wanted to go see the American Idol show, but that stuff bores me. So he went to the show … and left me alone for a good hour. Bad for him, good for me!

I found my way to my favorite store in all of WDW … and Leo forgot about it or he would not have left me alone. It’s a collectables store over near the Little Mermaid and it is filled with some of the most incredible (and pricey) collectables, many one-of-a-kinds. Although I can’t afford any of the one-of-a-kinds, it’s fun to look at them.

aIMGP6543.jpg

However! Since I have not really bought my “good souvie” yet and had most of my souvie money left … and no hubby nagging over my shoulder … I had my sights set on getting something in this store. And I found it! My Samurai Mickey. And, even though I saw one on Main Street and thought $175 was too much, I found out from one of the CMs why: there were only 300 made of this particular statue. I just HAD to have it.

Isn’t he just the cutest? I have a place for him at home right next to my Patriotic Mickey statue where he is saluting with the flag behind him. There is one of these right behind the ticket counter at Shades.

aIMGP6880.jpg

aIMGP6883.jpg

I bought it, sent it to the front for pick up on the way out and headed out to grab some ice cream at the Dino … and try to figure out how to break it to Leo what I had just done. Hmmmmmm…

aIMGP6535.jpg

Leo finally came out of the show and found me near Dino with my half melted ice cream that I couldn’t finish anyway. By the way, I chose not to say a word until the very last minute.

We took our time making our way out of the park and wandered Big Blue where I picked up a couple pins and through the shops along Hollywood Blvd and whatever the other street is called. I don’t know about others, but I find that I just can’t help myself – I always look both ways before stepping off the curb on these “streets.” I do the same thing over in the faux New York neighborhood. Silly me!

After a quick stop to pick up my Mickey, we headed to the car. Much to my relief, Leo didn’t really have a bad reaction. He just gave me that “look” and probably bit his tongue half off. I guess he figured it was the last day so how much more damage could I possibly do? Hehehehehe, he don’t know me too well, do he?

But I was a good girl and didn’t splurge anymore … this trip. Of course, not more than a couple hours ago, I made an eBay purchase of a limited edition Steiff Steamboat Willie. Shshshshshshsh … and that means YOU Tanisha, dear daughter of mine. It was just too well priced to pass up.

asteamboat.jpg

Anyway, I digress. Back to the TR.

We headed out of the park and on to our last few hours at Magic Kingdom. Luckily, since we were staying at Shades, we didn’t have to pay for parking at MK. At least, this year. We didn’t use to have to pay for parking at any of the parks … but that’s a whole other story.

It was bitter sweet walking through the entrance for the last time this trip. And remember how low the crowds were at Hollywood? Well, that’s because EVERYONE was here at MK today. My goodness! I have never, even on our November trip two years ago, have ever seen the park so full. It was kind of a disappointment because I knew that meant not being able to hit Pirates or Mansion as many times as I wanted to.

Of course, we headed straight to Pirates … and found a 40-minute wait. Not wanting to wait that long, we headed over to the Mansion … and found a 100-minute wait!!!

aIMGP6606.jpg

As much as I LOVE Mansion, there was no way on earth I was about to stand in line for nearly two hours. I decided to go back over to Pirates and see if the line had gone down. It did. It was now 30 minutes. I thought, what the hell, this is my last chance of the trip, so we hopped in line. It didn’t really take 30 minutes, luckily. It was more like 20 minutes.

By the time we came out, it was nearing time for the evening parade. We chose a spot over at the end of Frontierland nearest the Mansion. Our plan was to run like the dickens after the parade to the Mansion to get one last ride in. It worked. And this corner was a great place to watch the parade too, crowds and all.

aIMGP6750.jpg

aIMGP6719.jpg

aIMGP6735.jpg

This is a shot I stopped to get on our way (very rapidly) to catch the last fireworks show. Of course, I had to wait what seemed like forever for this guy to finish taking photo after photo after photo after photo of his kid right in the middle of the shot. Normally I would be patient, but I was in a hurry, after all. I think 27 shots should be enough, wouldn’t you?

aIMGP6688.jpg

I snapped a couple and was on my way. I didn’t want to make those behind me wait as long as the first guy did.

We didn’t move quite as fast as we should have and were stuck kinda behind a bunch of trees. Our normal spot is no longer a free space. We use to always go to the Noodle Factory deck, but now you have to make ressies and pay $75 each for the pleasure of sitting there now. Of course, you do get a dessert bar. If you couldn’t guess, I am being a smart butt. I love everything Disney, but I thought that was a bad decision. Of course it makes more money for Disney, but did they really need it that badly? Really? Seventy-five dollars?

aIMGP6684.jpg

aIMGP6656.jpg

aIMGP6650.jpg

Now, after the fireworks, we decided to stay in the park as long as humanly possible. And since Leo really wanted one of the popcorn boxes (not the souvie cups, the cardboard boxes that most people throw away), we decided to try and find a cart that was still open. I had suggested waiting for about 15 minutes to let the crowd thin out. But, noooooooooo, we couldn’t do that. And the only place we could see that was still open was on the OTHER SIDE of the hub.

You guessed it! We made our way across this mass of people. I would have taken a photo, but we were packed in so tight I couldn’t even bring my camera up. We pushed and we shoved and we tripped and we stumbled nearly to the other side … just to meet up with a solid wall of baby buggies! And I mean these women (well, mostly women) were not about to give and inch so we could get through. I finally had to step OVER one. Well, over the foot rest part. I didn’t actually step over a child.

After all the pushing, shoving, tripping and being cussed out … and one “good luck honey” … we made it to the other side and to the popcorn cart before they closed. With Leo’s popcorn in hand, we found a little corner behind the cart to wait out the crowd.

As a side note, I have this photo of the castle and parade that I have no clue when I took it.

aIMGP6617.jpg

After waiting for nearly 30 minutes for the crowds to clear enough to walk around, we scooted back over to see if Pirates and the Mansion were still open. Pirates was, but by the time we got off Pirates and over to the Mansion, it was closed. And, as with our first night here, we were the only ones in our boat on Pirates. Another bitter sweet moment tonight.

So we took our time walking throughout the park, even though it was technically closed. We were going to stay until we were escorted out! Here are a few shots I was able to get.

aIMGP6781.jpg

aIMGP6763.jpg

aIMGP6765.jpg

aIMGP6769.jpg

Finally, we couldn’t put it off any longer. We had to start towards Main Street and on out, saying goodbye until May 2011. By the time we got to the castle, there were a handful of other people seemingly doing the same as we were: stretching it out as long as were allowed to.

Just as we got to the castle, the kiss goodnight started. Perfect timing! We stood and watched the kiss and got misty eyed and lumpy throated. Well, I was. I doubt it affect Leo the same way.

Here are my last shots in the park. : o (

aIMGP6328.jpg

Farewell my sweet! In the infamous words of the governor of Caleefornia: I’ll be back!

Of course, all this stalling and stretching our time nearly cost us our ride to the parking lot. We barely made it in time. But at least it would not have been a long walk if we had missed it.

Tomorrow, a fond farewell to Shades and the beginning of a very long 17 hour drive home.

I WAS all set to head to bed, then I saw this was up and there went my plans. Well, let me say, it was worth staying up a bit longer for your wonderful pictures and great stories! I'm feeling as sad as you must have on your last day at our favorite place on earth. I was also thinking how wonderful it would be if we were ever down there at the same time and could actually meet and share some magical times together. Who knows? Someday. After all, it IS the most magical place in the world........

Yep, you never know what may lay ahead in the happiest (and most magical) place on earth.

Hi, I followed you over from Lisa's TR and I'm so glad I did! I have spent the whole morning reading your report...sorry kids!

Most of the comments you made about watching people and listening to newbies are the same things I say.

I laughed out loud at your language problem stories. The 'why' one reminded me of Abbott and Costellos 'Who's on First' sketch.

On your AK day you commented on the hidden trail around the tree. We found it one day by accident and were blown away.

The water bridge - my DH is an engineer and he is totally fascinated by this bridge and the support it takes to hold up water like that. He intently studies it every time we go over or under it.

Your pictures are amazing! One of my boys is interested in photography and I keep calling him over to look at your pictures.

Thanks for a great TR! Loved every minute of it!
Merci

I've been following along from before I left and after I got back. Reading before I left got me excited to go and following along since I have been back is making the withdraws better. I am trying to figure out how to go next summer....lol

Welcome along for the ride. I have one more chapter in this TR and am planning to continue with various installations from local trips, trips to Mom's in Upstate NY (which are comedic soap operas all their own) and days out and about with the grands. Hope you stick with me.

I know what you mean. Writing this TR has helped me through the withdrawl too. Now that I only have one more chapter, I'll have to firgure something else out. :confused3 Of course, another trip south would help!

Oh, I just got started reading and your trip is about to end. :guilty: Your pictures are AMAZING! I so wish I could take such great pictures.

I know the feeling you get when you know you're walking out of the Magic Kingdom for the last time. I absolutely hate that part of the trip.

Thanks Kelly. I see you are going for Christmas. Didn't you just get back? Lucky you!!!! :worship:

I did, isn't it great! My poor husband stayed home in June so when I got a 40% pin code I decided to sacrifice and go again in December;). For him...:lmao: We are staying at POP.

You take some great shots - I love your pics. Any suggestions for me on how to take those shots? I folllow many TR and your pics are one of the best!

Tomorrow, a fond farewell to Shades and the beginning of a very long 17 hour drive home.

Oh I hate to see your trip end. I enjoyed every post on your report. We will be at Shades a week tomorrow and reading your report kept me going during my long wait. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing.

Just managed to finally get caught up and was soooo sad to see it was your last day. I've LOVED your TR! :lovestruc Great job!

And my jaw hit the floor when I saw that Steamboat Willie. Steamboat Willie has always been my DH's favorite Mickey and the man actually teared up when he saw him driving the boat at the end of Fantasmic! It was so sweet. So I'm totally going to have to spend the next few months searching for one to buy him for Christmas! :goodvibes

Great TR!! I loved your castle pics!! Esp with Walt & Mickey  I can't even imagine having to drive 17 hrs home after leaving WDW - I would have to have a pit stop at some fun destination so I wouldn't feel so sad :sad1:

Hey we live close to each other. It only took us 15 hours from Vero Beach coming home. Vero adds at least another hour onto the drive. Do you stop a lot?? Now going it took us about 15 1/2, but we stopped TOO MUCH. LOL We did eat at Cracker Barrel too going down so that added an hour easily. Friends of ours do it both ways in 14 hours. They stop every 3 hours to switch driver's and get gas/food/potty breaks but they eat in the van.
