Why first week of Sept. cheaper (M-Th)?

Is there some negative factor such as the shows being on hiatus, super hot weather, conventions in town? Or is this a nice time to go for a quieter trip?

IMO, it's usually just a quieter time to go. Most places, schools are back in session, summer vacations are over. Most Vegas hotels will usually offer cheaper rates during the week as well. Not just during this time, but all year. Anytime you can go during the week to Vegas is always better and slower.

Being the first week is also Labor Day weekend, most people will usually do a long weekend during the weekend and not during the week. Most people will get there Friday. Stay Friday, Saturday and Sunday night and leave on that Monday. Business tends to slow down for them after so to get people in, they'll offer better discounts.

Some shows may be dark (meaning they will not show on certain days of the week), but it's not usually for the whole week. Usually they might be dark for Monday and Tuesday, then show the rest of the week. Not all shows are dark at the same time though. I noticed they will try to alternate days that way there is some type of show available each night.

Thanks. I'll have to check the black out dates for the shows we want. I guess it comes down to whether we can handle 100+ weather. Ugh.

By then, the weather should start coming back down into the 90's. June, July and August are usually the months with 100+ weather. The hotels/casinos are nicely air-conditioned.

The week after Labor Day is traditionally a slow week everywhere. Schools are
back in session. Thats the ONLY time Ill go to WDW. Like Thumper_Man said,
the hotels in Vegas want to attract people during the slow time with cheaper
rates. Vegas hotels NEVER discount when there is a big convention in town -
thats when all rates go up.

BTW: I'm in Vegas right now. Supposed to be shooting a reality show. It's 118.

For those weekdays the first week of Sept. right after labor day, since there are less crowds, is it easier to get nicer chairs/locations in the shade for the pool areas or even discounts on the lounge chairs or cabanas? The prices are WAY ridiculous imho.

It also grossed me out to read about floating layers of suntan lotion/sweat in the pools. Is that only when they have the huge pool parties?

My husband was the pool manager at Bellagio and then Venetian/ Palazzo for several years. The thing about pool chairs is that you have to get there early to get the good ones. You can't come down from your room at 12 or 1 and think there will be any good ones left for you. If you come down in the morning and the sun isn't over the pool yet, have a pool attendant seat you and request an area where the shade will be staying. They work on tips, so if you tip well, they will try their best to get you the best chair. As for the floating film on the water, the pools are cleaned super frequently, sometimes daily in the busy season. The more people are in the water and the later in the day it is, the more tanning oil you will see on the water.
