Why does the Fantasy have Nassau on the back if it doesn't go to that location?

It only goes on carrieban cruises which don't go to Nassau. Just curious why it's on there, anyone know why?

Right, it's where the vessel is registered as it's home port. It has to do with tax and fee issues, etc.

The entire fleet is registered in Nassau.

The county of registry is the name you see on all ships.

Ship's Registry - The Bahamas ...

not Nassau (which is the country's capitol)

International Issue:

Ship registration
is the process of documenting a ship's given nationality. The nationality of a ship allows it to travel internationally wherever citizens of that nation are authorized to travel. The registration is almost like the passport for the ship, itself. Per international agreements, every merchant ship must be registered to a particular country. The country to which a ship is registered is called its “flag state.” A ship is bound by the laws of its flag state, and one commonly says a ship sails “under the flag” of its country of registration.

Reason for Registration

Ship registration has been in practice since the beginning of business conducted over the seas. It was originally used to control ships ferrying cargo among European countries and to ensure that ships were built locally and using local crews. Today it is used to document ships for ownership in order to provide definitive evidence of nationality for international treaty purposes. For example, ships flying under certain flags may be allowed into the territorial waters of a nation while other nations' ships would not be. Also, financing entities may be willing or able to provide funding opportunities to ships flying under certain flags and not others due to laws allowing or prohibiting financial transactions with certain nations.

Registration Requirements

Every vessel that wants to travel internationally and cross international borders must be registered. Registration is not generally required for vessels that only travel locally, but some nations provide registration for these vessels, as well. Every nation's registration requirements varies. For example, most countries will have different requirements for vehicles of different sizes, uses, and passenger or cargo occupancy.

US version: WHAT ARE THE VESSEL NAME AND HAILING PORT MARKING REQUIREMENTS?
Documented vessels do not display their official numbers on the outside of the hull, but are identified by the name and hailing port. The application for documentation must include a name for the vessel composed of letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals and may not exceed 33 characters. The name may not be identical, actually or phonetically, to any word or words used to solicit assistance at sea; may not contain or be phonetically identical to obscene, indecent, or profane language, or to racial or ethnic epithets. Once established, a vessel's name may not be changed without application, fees, and the consent of the Director, National Vessel Documentation Center. There is no rule against duplication of names for documented vessels, so hailing ports are helpful in identifying vessels.

Comment from a retired USCG cutter captain

At sea flags don't last long! so it is not unusual for a merchant vessel or a yacht to not fly a flag .... the hailing port on the stern is the 'official' claim as to registry. A trivia tidbit: an undocumented vessel is considered a potential pirate (yes even today) and can be subjected to inspection from naval or law enforcement authority. If challenged and a vessel presents (or claims verbally over the radio) a flag that CONFLICTS with the nationality indicated by the hailing port, THAT vessel can also be investigated. I used this to get boarding teams on more than one drug laden vessel .... the bad guys often didn't know the rules of the game.
