I loved the hat! People on DIS will complain about water being wet.
This is probably the most accurate line I have ever read. When I talk about the DIS to non-DIS people, that's exactly how I describe many of the people who I have seen come and go over the years. That being said...
I love the hat, and I have been to DHS/MGM since before the hat was there. And because I am a Disney purist, I must point out that the hat was installed in 2001 to commemorate Walt Disney's 100th birthday. Not to block an MGM logo or anything like that. And yes, the Earful Tower was the original icon for Disney/MGM Studios.
My first visit to WDW was during the 25th anniversary celebration. This means that the first time I saw Cinderella Castle in person, I got to see the birthday cake overlay. I was very impressed at the sight. I may not have seen the castle in person before 1997, but I was well-aware of what it looked like.
The sorcerer hand and wand was added to Spaceship Earth in 1999 as part of the millenium celebration. The numbers "2000" above Spaceship Earth were changed to the word "EPCOT" after that celebration, and until the structure was eventually taken down. The number 100 was never part of this.
These changes, or "plusses" as Walt Disney often called them, have always been enjoyable to me. Disers are quick to jump on changes to the parks. Sometimes they are a little bit over-sensitive. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. I personally have not seen a Disney movie since 2001. While I love the parks and the Disney classics, I have lost interest in everything else.
So when a legendary rides like POTC get "plussed" with Johnny Depp, or when IASW gets "plussed" with Disney characters, it ruins the original theme of an attraction that Walt Disney created himself. That is blasphemy to a fan of the real Disney. And in the case of IASW (
Disneyland) Walt's tribute to the children of the world has become a shameless Disney (and Pixar) character promotion. Talk about destroying theming.
