I'm new to the boards but i have been a lurker for a while and i see posts about the hat. Posts saying how it's ''Pathetic'' and ''Pointless''. Now i know it isn't as big as the others but it is still a great structure. If someone showed me that hat i would imeidiatly think of DHS. Just like evertime i see a golf ball i think ''EPCOT'':rotfl2:

I don't mind the hat so much, but I like even better the theatre facade that is right behind it and blocked by it.

The hat is pretty gaudy, but I like it. I love Sorceror Mickey!

Don't mind the hat.

Hate the placement of the hat, especially given that it is nothing more than another shop.

As ghtx alluded to in his post, it's not the hat per se as much as where it is located. When Disney MGM Studios first opened there was pretty much a clear view all the way down Hollywood Blvd to the Chinese Theatre that houses the Great Movie Ride. This gave the entire "main street" the cohesive theming to the heyday of 20's and 30's Hollywood. With the introduction of the BAH, this site line was interrupted, and to many of us, destroyed the whole art deco feel of the park. And in fact, when the park first opened, it was not the hat that was the park icon (since it didn't exist). It was the earful tower- the water tower that you see off to the side of the park.

We don't really hate the hat. We just hate where the hat is at.

I'm going to post on this thread the same response I had to another person on this topic on a different thread:

What's wrong with the hat? I love it and apparently a lot of others do too. It's the icon for the park.....so do you want to tear down the tree of life, spaceship earth and the castle also? they are the icons of those parks....wow...sometimes you just gotta wonder.......

It's the icon of the park RIGHT NOW. Rememer that for a lot of us growing up, there was no hat and the beautiful and stunning Chinese Theater was the icon of the park. And it fit perfectly. When I enter DHS I know in my head that I have stepped back in time to old Hollywood. And I'm doing really well feeling like that's happened until I'm smacked in the face with that hat. It looks too new and pretty much blocks out the Chinese Theater completely. And it looks totally out of place surrounded by all the architecture of Hollywood Blvd. and Sunset Blvd.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful, huge hat. And it DOES fit at DHS as it represents (at least to me) Fantasia and all the huge milestones that went along with it. But it DOES NOT fit as the first thing you should see when you walk into the park. As someone else mentioned, it would be a great addition to the backlot tour.

Listen, I've come to terms with the fact that the hat has become a permanent icon / pin station in DHS. Would I love to see it moved? 100% yes. Do I think that this would ever happen (any time soon at least)? No.

I think that the point I'm trying to make is that Cinderella Castle, Spaceship Earth, and the Tree of Life have always been the icons of the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom. BUT the hat has not always been the icon of DHS. So when you mention tearing down all the other icons and how outlandish that would be, keep in mind that, while it was not torn down, the Chinese Theater was once the icon of DHS and has been replaced. And THAT'S perhaps why so many people have a problem with it.

The "hat" has a purpose. It was built to hide the MGM icon behind it. The relationship between Disney and MGM was not without issues. MGM received $$$each time it was used in video/film, photo, etc. Disney's solution was the "hat."

I like the hat. My family likes to take pictures in front of the hat each visit, but I didn't visit dHS before there was the hat.

I have a picture I really like taken of the inside of the hat lookin up.

I'm pretty sure MGM doesn't own the original theater.

A reason that actual hat haters have for hating the hat (say that 3 times fast) is that it has no real purpose beyond being the park icon and a pin seller.

The castle has the dream suite and CRT. The Tree has ITTBAB. The "golf ball" has SSE.

I loved the hat! People on DIS will complain about water being wet.

Some people DO complain about a lot of crazy things on the DIS but I wouldn't say this is one of them.

Imagine if they dropped a huge tiara in the MK hub. I may be a great bit of architecture and many people would think it looks great, but do you think it would be a great fit?

Le sigh. I can't like the hat if I didn't visit DHS before the hat? IMHO, DHS is a small park that really needs the added oompf of the hat. It would be rather drab looking without it. TOT is the only other landmark that had a wow factor for us at DHS.

That's not what the PP is saying at all. He/she is saying you MAY feel differently if you got to experience the original view.

I loved it without the hat. It was so nostalgic and beautiful. The hat is okay, but it definately took that nostalgia away.

That's not exactly what I'm trying to say. The point is that (I'm assuming that the answer to my question is that no, you never saw the park before the hat) you don't know what you were missing. You never walked down Hollywood Blvd. to see the Chinese Theater.

And you didn't read in my post where I said that it's not that I don't like the hat. It's where it was placed that I, and many others, have a problem with. And where myself and minniemum pointed out that it simply does not fit with the theaming.

Reddog did a nice comparison about the MK and a huge tiara. Just because you may think it looks nice does not mean it belongs there.

You can like whatever you want but the OP asked us a question about why we don't like it. I was not trying to be rude when I asked about wether or not you experienced the park before the hat. I was just curious as to wether or not you had seen the beauty of the park without it. It's hard to defend something to someone who has never experienced it, like trying to explain Horizons or the World of Motion to people who love Mission:Space and Test Track.
