Why does it matter so much?

When my big-and-tall DH sleeps in a double, he sleeps on the diagonal -- no room for moi. When we sleep in a king bed and he snores (frequently) loud enough to crack the ceiling plaster, i can nudge him and get him to turn over, or at least move into a quieter position. When we stay at a hotel with separate beds I "have" to throw pillows at him to stop the noise.

Same here! DH is 6'4" and does the corner to corner sleep on doubles. Which leaves me having to sleep with the boychild--who likes to roll around in all different directions (still)--the occasional sidekick and feet in the face thing ruins my night!

So, give us at least a queen. We have a king at home.

funny thing, we used to sleep on a queen sized air mattress when camping. Did this for about 15 years. Last year, our mattress died, and instead of replacing it with another queen, I bought 2 of these mattresses from Coleman.

I intended to use them together, and make a double high king. Last minute, I just left them as double high singles.

Best night sleep camping we've either had. No rolling towards each other when getting up or down or changing positions. No fighting over space. Still slightly too short for DH, but so was the queen.

I also am confused why some of the nasty responses to the question. I see nothing wrong with it and bed size is not a make it or break it issue for me.

We have a queen a home, but a full size on vaca is fine with me. As we own a timeshare and DVC we usually end up with kings though. I also agree with the previous poster that I feel kind of lost in them as DH and I are not big people. I can see for a larger person why it would make a difference.

The Titans lost the Superbowl years back by an inch. Sometimes, a little bit makes a big difference. For us, a double puts us close to the edge. And I'm tall so I have to sleep partially on a diagonal

On my first read of the question, I actually kind of wondered if there was some condescention; the last line in particular about "does it really matter
or is it all just a mental thing" might be read as though it's talking down. Now, of course, I doubt that was the intent, but I can see how it might have read that way. I suspect that may have created a bit of misunderstanding that triggered some slightly emotional responses.

Back to the point, I will sleep in a double on vacation, though we definitely prefer at least a queen (which is what we have at home). Apart from the
increased length, it feels like the dimensions between double and queen are kind of hinging on a magic glass ceiling, at least for us. The way we usually sleep in a queen, there's just enough room for us to be comfortable. Any less, and we certainly notice it. I suspect this is probably why the queen size is so popular... it's width is just enough to provide sufficient room for comfort of two adults.

Another way to look at it is this... if we assume that the loss of the six inches doesn't matter, and a double bed will do, then why not just lose another six inches and go down to a 48" bed with. After all, it's only six inches, right? And, let's do that again. And again, if necessary. I think it's obvious one will eventually hit a breaking point. I suspect the double/queen size is right around that point for many people.

I always kind of wonder the same thing, OP, because bed size is not a priority with us when choosing a hotel room so I'm interested in hearing the reasons why this is a very important priority for others.

DH is 6'1" and I'm 5'7" and we have a double bed at home that we share with absolutely no problems. When we vacation and end up in a king it feels like we're sleeping in two different bedrooms. ;)

I think it comes down to what kind of a sleeper you are.

For me, I am an extremely light sleeper. It sucks, I don't like it, but I can't help it. In a double bed, I am probably going to get bumped more often and be more cognizant of flopping around--stuff like that. That's just me, though. I realize there's a whole legion of people who sleep just fine, can have people laying all over them, and find that very comfy.

DH is 6'3". I am 5'7". Neither of us are what anyone would consider "petite". ;)

We can't both sleep in double bed. if we get a room with 2 doubles, we each take one bed.

I'm with the OP. We sleep in a queen at home, but when forced to sleep in a double when travelling, we sleep perfectly comfortably. To us it doesn't matter all that much.

My husbands feet hang over a double and he grew up sleeping alone in a double. The one time we tried to fit on a double bed, I fell out because he's hogging it. We were staying at his parents house and I spent the rest of the time sleeping on the couch. It was awful.

We don't normally sleep in the same bed on vacation if it's smaller than a king. We used to sleep girls on one bed, boys on the other on vacation.

But now that my oldest is just under 6 feet he can't share a bed with his father either so we now book either 2 rooms with girls in one, boys in the other or
get a suite with one king bed and 2 other beds - if the suite doesn't have a king bed, then we need 4 beds in the suite.

It's tricky to track down when traveling but I now refuse to be uncomfortable on vacation like I used to be when we tried to all squeeze into too small beds.

I am 70" tall. DH is 74" tall. (5'10" and 6'2").

A double bed is 75" long. Our feet really do hang off the end of a double...

Some want the queen size mattress for the width which is 6 inches more on a queen, but some need it for the length which is 5 inches more. Overall that's 4,050 square inches versus 4,800 square inches.

we have a queen bed at home, but always stay in a room with 2 doubles at wdw. doesn't make any difference to us, because we sleep spooned right up against each other anyway.

I told DH about this thread and he said he may be Grumpy, but he's not a dwarf, so we need king size.

My husband is 6'5" so king size is his happy place. But queen works. As a gal in her 50's I am still having heat flashes. So, occasionally I am in need of space. :)

My Hubby radiates heat so a few inches would make a difference to me :)

My wife says I do too.....and she considers that a good thing since she is always cold.

We have a queen at home, get lost in it even though I am 6'2" and 270 lbs, and DW if 5'7"......even with the cat on the bed too. Hotels, Double/queen/king doesn't matter.

I will say that I am amazed at the folks that need a big bed because their SO bothers them when they sleep, get 2 singles like in the I Love Lucy or Dick Van Dyke Shows, not a king, if that's the case.

Dh and I have a queen at home. We can sleep in a double, but we feel crowded. Dh is 6'4" and on a double the extra space for his knees comes out of my space. I like being comfortable when I'm on vacation and I'm a super picky sleeper. If we have a choice we always opt for queens.

Well for one, why do YOU care (OP) what size bed other people want or need on their vacations?

But while we're talking size, a queen bed is 5" LONGER than a double as well.

I doubt she cares what kind of bed people sleep in, probably just a curious question. I roll around alot while I sleep, I don't mean to, it's just what I do so any extra substance to the bed is OK with me:rotfl:

Why need singles? Maybe they like sharing a bed but want some space also. Twins are shorter also.
