Every time I read something in passing about the sailaway party- everyone sounds like they have a big grin on their face when they type the words! Why is this? What exactly is the sail away party and what do you do at it? Should we not miss this for sure?

I think the Sail away Party is special to most people because you really feel that you are on the ship now and your vacation has begun.

There is lots of music, dancing out on deck and high energy levels going on. The characters come out for a special appearance and dance with the cruise staff.

There is a special kind of magic about it that is hard to explain if you have never experienced it.

I would not miss it myself. Make sure when the ship starts to pull away from dock that you look out at the terminal for a surprise!

I agree. Everyone is all settled in by sailing time.

Everyone is ready for fun, there's music characters and everyone dances.

Yes look off the starboard side of the ship.

We even brought bubbles.

Some people also say they have seen dolphins accompany the ship out to see.

Can't wait to go back. :sunny:

Just because you're......

SAILING AWAY!!!!!

You have planned so long for the cruise, you are finally on board, the music is beating, your toes are tapping, your are watching the joy on all the childrens faces as they dance on the dance floor. It is such a Magical time........then the horn sounds, and you get chills..........it is a definate thing NOT to be missed!!

Hope :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Absolutely, don't forget to look back at the terminal as you sail away. We didn't know about that little surprise and missed it on our first cruise!

The sailaway party marks the time when the ship leaves port, thus seperating me from my everyday life; no laptop, no pager, no phone calls...aaaahhhhhhh!:teeth:

I think its the excitement of the beginning of what you know will be a great trip, combined with the music, characters, and cruise staff, getting you so pumped up, that you cant help but smile.
On our last cruise the sailaway party was held indoors due to lightning. At first I was bummed but it turned out great anyway. As soon as we did the countdown, Celebration started playing, and the balloon drop took place, I literally had tears in my eyes. All the planning and waiting were over and the fun was beginning! :Pinkbounc

I'll play devil's advocate and toss in an opinion on the other side (just remember, I've done 36 Disney cruises and have done a lot of sailaway parties, too, so I think it's different when it's your first time). Lately, instead of going to the party, hubby and I book massage appointments for right after the safety drill. For me, it's such a wonderful way to kick off the cruise. The spa is located all the way forward on deck 9, so you can hear it when they blast the ship's whistle. Hearing "When you wish upon a star" while having my back massaged is a taste of heaven!

The sailaway party is so much fun! The music, dancing, the ship's horn, everyone smiling, etc....

One time, hubby and I were on deck 10 for the sailaway, directly in front of the stage. There is a little platform there where you can see everything below. We were fortunate enough to be asked to help release the confetti during the countdown. That was so amazing! I'll never forget it!

I love sailaway, but in 5 cruises we've only done the party once. The me the area of the party is too crowded and noisy. We usually are up on deck 10 in the front - love waving to everyone on shore at Grills and again at Jetty park!

However you decide to celebrate it is a special time because it marks the beginning of a very special vacation!

Everyone's description here is pretty much right on, and I'll say I can't even put my feelings into words other than, YOU MUST ATTEND!

Barb is the only one I'll let slide, because, having done 36 cruises, she has it figured out, down to a science. (Massage while hearing the horn, how wonderful, now that is hitting on the ultimate experience!)

I liked the sail-away party so much because I felt like I could finally relax. Of course, the 3 hurricane drinks helped a lot too!

I totally agree. We had dinner at Grills the night before our cruise, and watched the Magic depart, and I can't imagine going on a cruise without a quick wave to the folks eating at Grills. Our DD was dancing on deck 9 during the sailaway party, and we could watch the fun she was having from deck 10.

I doubt I'll ever get up to 36 cruises (but a girl can wish...) so, for me - give me the sail away party!

This sounds so fun- and you can hear the exitement in all your descriptions- just like I said! Would it be appropriate to have party horns and your own confetti at this time? Any not to be missed photo ops?

So, what happens?!?!?!

We have Mickey hands we got as a gift....they will certainly be waving at the sailaway party! Well, one hand waving, the other holding a drink! (My goodness, if we had kids, they would be soooooo embarrassed by us!)

Well, I don't think we should tell you everything! You need to experience some of the magic for yourself.

karebear1, the horns would be okay, but I don't think the confetti would be a good idea. The crew members would have to sweep it all up and they have enough to do already. Some people bring those little bottles of bubbles with them and blow bubbles at the sailaway party.

We were told the confetti was a definite no-no.

The party is so much fun it can't be described. Every now and then, we'll hear a song on the radio that they played at Sail-away, and even DH gets a big smile on his face! Makes me want to get up in the middle of my office and dance!!!

If you would like to see a little of the sail away party you can download the first part of our cruise video here:

Magic cruise 2/21

If you have high speed internet it will take about 4 minutes to download, significantly longer if you have dial-up.

If you have problems downloading it make sure that you have the latest version of Quicktime (Quicktime 6) which you can download for free here:

Quicktime 6

The sail away party is at the end of the video, and yes I do get a big smile on my face when I think about it!

I can tear up thinking about any part of our cruise, but the sail away party had such a high energy level that you couldn't help but get caught up in the excitement. DH had the video camera on deck 10 & was able to look down at us on deck 9 occassionally. They kids watch it all the time & still get excited. Next time I have told DH to get up to deck 10 earlier so that he can be at the rail to tape the entire show for them...um us. ::MickeyMo
