Why does everyone have such nice handwriting and I don't?

Were you ever taught penmanship? My understanding is that most American public schools have dropped it or vastly reduced the time spent on developing legible handwriting.

I have pretty good handwriting. But, my son has some learning disability neurological things going on, and lack of ability in handwriting is one of the things involved.
Poor little guy would have had his knuckles rapped with a ruler until they bled, back in the old days where nice cursive handwriting was considered a necessary skill, and things like being left handed were considered evil curses and demonic possession!!!

I think some people have it, and some don't!!!

As long as it is legible enough to get by.... Hey, print if you need.. Whatever!!!

I recall my mother making me spend so much time on my handwriting as a kid. She bought the special lined paper they use in elementary school and I practiced every day. I hated it. It's something I've thanked her for now though, because it really did make a difference. She lacked the energy to do that with my baby sister, and it shows in the difference between our writing styles now.

Mine was bad to begin with, now that almost all of my "writing" in on-line, it has deteriorated terribly. When I write thank you notes it looks like a preschooler wrote it.

. Because I'm a Catholic school refuge. Back in the day when Nuns wore full Habits and were legally allowed to massacre little children. 12 years of Catholic school including a 3year stint with Sr. Mary Alice who could wield a ruler like a Jedi lightsaber.

Bad penmanship was akin to saying the Pope wore a dress. It was not allowed.

My handwriting is so bad that even I can't duplicate my signature! I bought a new truck this weekend and was just laughing at how different my scribbles looked on each of the 2000 pages they make you sign!

I used to have decent handwriting and now it is much worse. I think it's due to the fact that I type most of the day and when I put pen to paper, I am frustrated that the same sentence could be done so much more quickly if typed. So are you rushing things like I do thinking that you have to do it quickly? If not, then you must be a criminal - most have bad handwriting (j/k).

Remember the olden days of traveler's cheques? You had to sign them all at once. The first had your signature, the next few were pretty good...then it started looking like the path that a bouncing ball might take.

Sounds like you need a fountain pen! And a book on penmanship (I recommend the Palmer Method)! Then, once you fall down the fountain pen rabbit hole, you'll forget all about how bad your handwriting is because you'll be too busy looking for your next pen!

I honestly think it just comes down to a combination of practice and also caring about how your penmanship looks. I've always cared about how my handwriting looks, and while it's not even close to as pretty as some I've seen, it is nice. I know others who just don't care at all (males & females) and it's terrible!

My oldest has horrible penmanship but he also has a fine motor skills problem.
So, he just types as much as he can. Sometimes he will ask me to fill out important documents for him.

The other 3 go/went to Catholic school and they take a lot more time with handwriting lessons.

My handwriting is awful, whether it's in print or cursive. I regularly apologize to my guests at work while writing their names on their tickets.

I had several years of handwriting instruction in school. I was always terrible at it.

I have always had good penmanship. I was also taught calligraphy in school by the nuns.
