Why does DVC want to know your marital status?

How your deed is titled and survivor and all that is taken care of by the legality of the deed. Men do not have to endure a different title based on their marital status. Why does DVC insist on naming women as Miss or Mrs.? Women have been allowed to own property in FL for a long time. Surely it must be some legal reason, but it defies logic. And irritates the heck out of me. Someone please explain it to me. (Can't reach Member Administration to ask them.)

Do you mean when you book? I don't recall any titles being used on the deed.

It is fairly old fashioned - most reservation systems don't require it. I've used Ms forever as the counter to Mr but I'd be happy if they dropped it too.

I've seen women using Ms. before and after marriage for consistency and to avoid divulging their marital status QUOTE]

Yes, I have been using Ms. since the 70's.
When I first bought DVC in 1995 they asked if I was married. I was. My husband was not there, not on the membership, it is/was just mine. They were fine with that, but listed me as MRS. I argued, disagreed with that, but went through with it.
I have tried a few times to get them to change it, and they can't or won't. I ask to just leave no title. I can change my address, but not that stupid MRS.
Now I am adding my daughter to my deeds, and the New Owner Information Sheet they send to us, and we complete and send back with the registered deeds, asks for each of us if we are married or single!
25 years later, and still ridiculous.
What difference does it make, other than them to give us a MRS or MISS title. They just won't leave the title field empty.
I am planning on putting NA. But that may mess things up.
It does not say MRS or MISS on the deeds. But they insist on using it on all communication with us. Why???

I messed up my response above, so am posting again.

In my direct purchase from DVD my deed stated "my name (purchaser) whose address is " and did not state A MARRIED WOMAN.
I think it is just to give us a title!

Though Ms. was an option. I don’t know why it matters for title as long as the name is correct.
It matters to me. I highly object to being defined by marital status.
Are you a member? What title do they use in their communication with you? I did not get to pick MS, though I have used that since the 70's. Were you able to pick MS? They assigned MRS to me because I was married, and I am unable to change it to MS, or preferably no title.

I got off easy. I’m Dr.
Not related, but I highly object to government documents (like IDs) that require we choose a race. Not scientific and morally ambiguous at best.

Hi, Kat. No, I don't mean in booking. They use it in communications with me, email, snail mail, etc and have it in indelible ink in their records. For instance, in booking it defaults to MRS, I change it to MS, and it changes it back. In apparently all records regarding me, it insists I am MRS. No, it is not on the deeds, nor is "a married woman", but DVC uses titles in its communications. So insulting to be defined by marital status, and no reason.

I was asked. I use Mrs. and Ms. but will use Ms. more often just bc it’s really not their business of I’m married or not. I get MS. From Disney.

Along that lines, my husband is on the deed, but the reality is that I’m the one who spoke to DVC, did the presentations, got the paperwork, and filled it all out. My husband just signed. I sent it back listing me as primary, because I’m the one who handles all our finances and our DVC membership. When DVC set up our membership, they made him the primary contract owner and put him first on the deed. It’s a little thing, but a frustrating thing, that there an assumption the husband should be primary. Same with Mrs vs Ms (I’ve always used Ms as well).

Same for me. Apparently, this is what they have always been doing. They did it to us (me) back in 1999. The MRS vs MS vs no titles just names (which is what I prefer) bugs me, too, but no where near as much as the "husband must be primary" rule. My DH has no idea how any of this works, nor does he want to know. Doesn't even have a login.

Marital status matters in certain states where property purchased during the marriage is presumed to be owned by both parties by entirety regardless of whether both names are going on the deed. For that reason, I can see why DVC might ask. That said, there's no reason for the archaic titles in DVC correspondence and profile information. I use Ms. despite being married but I'd prefer no title at all.

When did you join? Did they ask you that during deed signing? So they put MS on all your email and snail mail and all communications?
I really want no title, but if there must be one, MS, which I have been using since 1976. (Coincidentally the bicentennial, kind of my own declaration of independence, although it just now occurred to me that it was the bicentennial year! haha) I just find being defined by marital status so Victorian and demeaning.

I don't think that is a little thing. It obviously ticks me off, and I am ranting at this point, but auto insurance does that, so many things do that. Our church does too, although my husband has not attended for years, he is listed as a member, and a man, so his name is primary and mine secondary!

I just became a DVC member and it uses Ms for me, but I am single and no one else is on my account.
Well that is good news! So when they created your account, it came as MS, or did they offer you a choice? Did you buy direct, so you were in the room with a closing agent?

Yes, I understand there can be legal reasons for needing to know and note the information, but it is not on the deed, which is fine. Why then use it in every piece communication! I should stop ranting. This started as a serious inquiry, but now I may just be complaining.
