Why do you stay on-site?

Dining plan baby!!!!!!!!!
Keys to the world!!!!!
Resort mugs!!!!!!
Mickey mouse soap!!!!!!!!!!
Luggage that "Magically appears"!!!!!!!!!!

I may have a slightly different perspective, in that I live 20 minutes away. So I could, theoretically, spend my vacation at home and drive to Disney every day like the off-property people do, and save myself a TON of $$$. But those day trips just don't feel like Disney trips to me. Even living this close, when I check in to a Disney resort, I feel like I'm far away from my every day life. I park my car and don't go near it until the trip is over. I like that their resorts are themed so well that I can have a trip to the Northwest (WL) or a trip to the Northeast (Epcot resort area) and they feel like totally different trips. I do occasionally go on vacation to places other than Disney, but they are no where near as relaxing or fun as the vacations I take virtually in my own back yard. I guess you either feel the Disney magic or you don't, and if you do, you want to be as close to it as possible, as many hours a day as possible. I'd live there if I could.

I like onsite and offsite. The main perk of onsite has to be extra magic hrs. We always rent a car as we like to explore Florida, not just stay in Disney. I like the Disney 'magic' touches and themes of the Disney resort rooms, and the landscaping, but now my kids are big we are finding it too cramped to stay in 1 room. I am not that keen on Disney transportation. I have found buses to be increasingly crowded and disliked having to stand on a 20 min journey back from MK. 2 rooms starts to get pricey and we can get a nice 4 bed home with private pool and hot tub and games room for $99 per night. For vacations of 1 week or less I would stay onsite. 2 weeks I would budget and stay offsite in a rental home as we love the privacy, space and having our own pool. I did buy into DVC but when Disney brought out Dining plans, I decided I would prefer a resort stay with dining package. (I didnt like having annual dues to pay when I owned DVC.) Split stays work best for us 1 week on 1 week off.

For us it is like so many have posted, the 24/7 Magic as well as the real world seems to disappear for the entire vacation. And to the OP's comment's about spreading out, that is the joy of DVC. With 3 kids we do like room, so now we have the best of both worlds, on site and a 2BR with W/D and full kitchen although I don't see a kitchen getting any use other than the fridge.;)

From the moment I touchdown in Orlando, getting on Magical Express I am in disney and feeling right so. Staying on property is the only way for my family. I love the feeling of being emerged in disney 24/7, have never rented a car, always relied upon the disney busses to take us everywhere. This is my vacation and it is a double plus not having to drive anywhere, I leave the driving for I get home- boohoo!

Is there an outside world:rotfl: ? It is magic and a little piece of heavenly happiness even for a short time:goodvibes Love the atmosphere and for some reason my 7 yr old DS gets a big kick out of the food courts:wizard:

I could give a lot of reasons. I hate renting a car. I like not carrying my credit card or more than a little cash. I like only having one thing to keep track of - no seperate room key, tickets, credit card, etc. I love Magical Express and not having to deal with Orlando baggage claim. I like evening EMH, because I'm a night owl. I love the dining plan and having everything pre-paid.
But what I like best about staying onsite is being able to order a drink or two with dinner without having to decide who will abstain to drive back to our hotel. In the real world, we are very seldom able to enjoy things like dinners with wine pairings together because one of us needs to drive home, but at Disney, we can stay on site and order the icewine flight at Artist Point or sample beers from around the world at Epcot knowing that someone else will be doing the driving!

I mostly don't want to deal with the driving!

Traffic around Disney can be awful, especially if you have to travel on I4. Plus, the money you save staying off property would be spent on a rental car (unless you drive to Disney).

I like being able to ship purchases back to my resort, take part in EMH, and take a quick trip back to the resort any time for a break.

If a 2 bedroom with a kitchen appeals to you, why not try renting DVC points? A 2br at OKW is only 22 points a night on week nights during value season- that generally works out to around $220/nt, depending on who you rent from.

To echo what others have said - plain and simple, its all about the magic. Sure it's convenient not to have to drive (or rent a car) and to stay so close to the parks but the real reason DH and I shell out the money to stay on the property is we want the full package. We dont have any kids (yet) so when we go to WDW its so WE can feel like kids again. I definitely dont think we could do that if we stayed off site. The "real world" outside the Disney bubble just wouldnt allow it.

Part of what we pay for is to totally unwind, let our imaginations go nuts and just enjoy the experience. I dont think I'd like having to shut that off each night as we left the property to stay at a swanky condo. It just wouldnt be the same.

The magic!

1. Magical Express - they handle the luggage & away we go!
2. No room key/car keys to hold on to, just your park tickets
3. The convenience of the bus - no worries about driving
4. Bypassing the huge parking lots
5. The deluxe dining card
6. The convenience of the package drop off
7. The giftshops at the resorts
8. The magic, magic, magic!

Exactly!:mickeyjum

We feel like the outside world doesn't exist when were are in Disney. In our early trips we stayed offsite. It was brutal trying to haul dds things to the car, onto the tram and into the park. So much easier to head for the bus and know if any problems occured it was a short hop back to the hotel.

I have never stayed "off-property" since I started visiting WDW in 1981. On my first visit, I stayed at the CR and really never considered staying anywhere else, although we did eventually stay (and enjoy) our stays at other WDW resorts. Being DVC members, now we tend to stay at one of the DVC resorts 90% of the time. So I can't comment on off-site visits myself.

My mom, another veteran of all-Disney-all-the-time visits, ;) stayed once at a Howard Johnson's near WDW. She was unhappy with everything from the shuttle service to the fact that she could not get a Coke (only Pepsi!:sad1: ) and she was only staying for one night! I think she was being overly critical, but she says not. The hotel itself was very nice. She said she just felt totally disconnected from the Disney experience and was very happy when she arrived at her WDW hotel.

Going back into the "real world" when leaving WDW is very tough. When I see that sign that says - You are Now Leaving WDW - buckle up and come back soon - I feel very sad indeed.

First off I love this thread!

For us really it's a combination of being immersed in Disney, the convenience and the relaxation factor.

When I go in vacation it usually takes me a good week to really get relaxed to enjoy what I'm doing and not to think of work and other worries. That's pretty bad. However when you go to Disney and stay on site all that goes away quickly. Right away I know that most/all things are taken care of for me. That statement there just relaxes me. I know when I get on the plane on day one I can have just a big sigh of relief. I appreciate it and so do my wife and kids. That's what a vacation is for.. to relax and have fun, right?

So being on site there's no figuring out transportation from the airport, no renting a car, figuring out where to eat (or wasting money on crummy places to eat), driving to and from the parks and fighting the traffic, feeling that I wish we had of just stayed on site.

It's weird but being on-site gives you this sense of a special community that you're a part of. Again a feeling you can’t describe. Knowing that you don’t have to “go home” to a hotel that is far away and is accessed by your car and your driving at the end of a great day is a wonderful feeling.

Our first trip we stayed at the Embassy Suites Lake Buena Vista just off the east gates International Drive. It was a nice place to stay no question. The rooms were big with a kitchenette and they offered free breakfast. However we felt outside. Walking around our hotel was just not good enough entertainment being that close to Disney. During that trip we were at MK one day and stopped at the CR for lunch. My DW said wouldn't it be awesome to just stay here and not go back to the other hotel?? I looked around and said wow you are so right. This WOULD be awesome. So we switched to the CR for the next 4 nights. WHAT a difference it made. It was SO convenient, so relaxing, so cool! The ability to wake up, walk from your room and 2 minutes later your riding on the monorail to the MK or Epcot. Priceless. This trip was kid free as we didn't have any yet and even still it was a tonne of fun.

Our next trip in 2003 was incredible. We were totally immersed in Disney for 12 days with our 3.5 year old DS. We stayed at the Swan this time. The location was fantastic right beside Epcot and the Boardwalk. There were SO many things to do and see without even going to a park. Yes, without going to a park. Talk about immersed. I don’t even think we gave staying off site a second thought. We knew we’d be on site.

I remember one night walking leisurely from the Beach Club to Epcot with my DW and DS after eating at Beaches and Cream (in the BC) on a warm summer night. We took our time looking around enjoying the view of the Boardwalk, the resorts, the boats, the sand and the water. Everyone we saw had a smile on their face, holding doors for other people and just generally being in a great mood like us. It was something you can't describe but you felt... magic. And, also something you'd never get being off-site. It’s like when you come out of a really really good movie, you know, and everyone is in that same great mood.

Every night we watched the Epcot fireworks from our room or the beach and we truly enjoyed the entertainment and action of what was going in. This post doesn’t even come close to highlighting all the details that we enjoyed and saw being on site.

I think the benefits to being on site are really endless depending on what your level of convenience is. For us it worked out really great. We could go out early in the morning (and sometimes catch the EMH) to the parks and come back for a swim or rest in the afternoon. Maybe head over to the Boardwalk for some shopping/enternainment. Then we’d head out for some really nice dinner and then back to the parks for some night time fun or over to Downtown Disney. When you’re offsite you don’t do this. You get up early (to not fight the crowds) and drive over to a park. When you’re tired/exhausted you leave the park, find your car and drive back to your hotel.

I know there are people that for some reason don’t see the benefit in staying on-site. It’s their choice and I respect it. I think though that those people have never actually stayed on-site for more than 2 or 3 nights. From the posts that I see on this board and our experience is that once you stay on site it’s really REALLY hard to go back to staying at a hotel off-site.

We were back in 2005 with our DS and DD and again we stayed on-site. This time it was at the Dolphin. Yet again we had an awesome on-site vacation. In 2008 we are planning a trip to the Beach Club as we seem to love the Epcot area.

For us (unless it wasn't possible financially) when we stay at Disney it'll always be on-site for sure. I really can’t imagine it any other way.

I agree with what everyone else is saying. It's convenient, easy, and you get to stay in "The Magic" 24/7!

Honestly, I don't think I could ever go back to staying offsite after I've been onsite for so many years! I don't know what it would even be like to be offsite!! I think I'd be bored to tears!:lmao:

I went to WDW for the first time this year in September and we stayed at the POP. I just can't imagine NOT staying on site. I loved the EMH, how nice everyone(CMs and other guests)was, NOT having to drive anywhere if we did not want to, being able to send our purchases back to our hotel...etc. Next trip will be in 4 years when my niece is 5 and we take her(although you'd better beleive I would go sooner if I can get away with it! :lmao: ) we want to stay in at least a moderate..not that I did not like POP(LOVED it).. but I'd like to try to stay at each level at least once. I don't think I'd ever want to not stay onsite.. I am too hooked on the magic.. :)

Purely to be immersed in the magic all the time. It may not be the best financial choice, but I enjoy my vacation more onsite.

Oooohhh I like that. It does make you feel like you are a part of something. I also like the bubble description. I only have to be aware of the real world if I choose to. I do like staying at the deluxe resorts and getting my USA today to read.

It's all about Disney - all the time!! that's why we love it.. You are truly immersed in the magic from the minute you get up til the minute you go to bed..

Also, convienence with the busses/monorail, etc.. is a huge plus.
Personally, i will never stay off sight again.

You don't have to; think, make deliberate decisions, argue about which lane is moving faster, hunt for a parking spot, cook, remember what section of the parking lot you are in, make the beds, worry about making it thru the yellow light before it turns red, shop for groceries, deal with distractions, feel guilty about eating out when you've got this kitchen that you have paid for and heavn't used....once!

We've never stayed offsite, but there's just something to be said for entering the magical world of Disney and not having to leave that world until our vacation is over. I love feeling like I'm truly away on vacation! The minute we leave Disney property and see the outside world again, that magic is gone.
