Why do some threads go on and on ?

Ok so the peanut thread is still going strong, but this one is already on page 2.
 

The problem is now with that one is people coming on, not reading the thread and just jumping in without a clue of what the discussion ended up being. It's spiraling out of control now.

Oops. I think maybe I just did that. I wasn't going to read the whole thing, but I wanted to participate anyway. :)

A detailed mathematical analysis indicates that the original post is rarely responsible for the length of a thread. 78.3% of the time, posts #17 thru #21 provoke and push peoples' buttons, leading to pages-long threads.

I'm coming late to the thread. I didn't read any of the responses, but I wanted to add my thoughts that the reason threads won't die is because people post previously debated thoughts without reading any of the previous 20+ pages.
