Why do so many people spell LOSE as LOOSE?

My thing is when people beg for ADVISE instead of ADVICE.

"If you need advice, I'd advise you to call a specialist."

That drives me mad too! I also hate when people use brought instead of bought and too instead of to.

I can understand typos etc, and I certainly make a lot of them, but the improper use of "to", "too", and "two" as well as "there", "they're", and "their" drives me crazy! The "lose" "loose" thing is prevalent on the DIS/DVC boards because people are always afraid of "losing points". Unfortunately, they usually say they are "loosing points", and I always want to comment about the loose points flying around!

If I could hold a class on "Me, myself and I" I'd be happy to do it. That one drives me a little bonkers.

The 's put in places it doesn't belong is another one. Then those same people will not use an apostrophe to imply ownership. I want to grab a red pen sometimes.

Where in the world did they get that one??? I suppose they also visit the Liberry in the month of Febuary.

I often make errors in typing. Like "the" will come out "teh" because I'm typing too quickly. I think I have manual dyslexia.

My biggest peeve are extraneous apostrophes. I hate seeing signs for "Apple's 25 cents" or similar. Oh, and when people spell "grammar" as "grammer," especially if they proclaim to be a real stickler about it. Ugh!!!

I'll go to somebody's house and there's a nice sign by the front door, but it says "The Smith's". No, it's just "The Smiths" without an apostrophe! And it's "keeping up with the Joneses", not "keeping up with the Jones'" or even "the Jone's".

The "grammer" sticklers are funny, though.

For me, even though I know how to spell most words, I can't type worth a hoot. And even using a spell checker, it won't catch an error like "lose" vs. "loose" as they are both spelled correctly. Now if someone could write a spell checker that also checks for context but that is certainly unlikely.

I have to confess, I hate spelling, grammar, typing errors! To me, they are major distraction from whatever message they are trying to convey. I have put down books that I was reading after finding a mistake.

I understand that people make mistakes. Heck, I'm a terrible typist (especially with my fake nails!), but I try to go back and proofread my posts before sending. Yes, sometimes I miss an error, especially if I'm emotional about my subject.

I really believe that, as wonderful as the internet is at fostering communication, a great disservie has been done against the language we use. Too many mistakes have become acceptable, like the examples already stated: lose vs. loose, their vs. they're, your vs. you're, to vs. too. If you try to point out someone's error, you are considered to be snarky or confrontational.

I don't care, but, I knew you would.

Unless the sign is trying to convey that this is the house of the Smiths, in which case the possessive would be correct.

I had this discussion with someone else over "master's degree" vs. "masters degree". Is it the degree of a master or a degree given to masters?

In the case of your example, is the sign referring to who lives there (The Smiths) or to whom the house belongs (The Smith's).

I would say both are correct (in both examples).

The loose/lose thing is not just on the DIS; I've seen it on many boards.

Firefox has a built-in spell check which is extremely handy. I consider myself a good speller, but anyone can have a typo or two.

I am not the world's greatest speller, and Lord knows, and most everyone else does too, I have LOTS of typos.

This really bugs me, because it is not one person, it is many people. When they mean lose, they type it as loose. Can't they read back and see that the sentence with the word loose makes no sense? I have come to the conclusion that TOO MANY people really believe the word lose has two o's.

DIS spelling lesson of the day:

"My child has a LOOSE tooth, I think he will LOSE it in a couple of days."

Same reason people write should of, would of, could of....instead of should have or should've

I have to just shake my head at some of the posts I read. Seriously, my 4th grader has better grammar and spelling skills. Has the text messaging gotten so prevalent that people cannot write anymore or are they really that uneducated? I'm not talking about typos but posts that are chock-full of spelling and grammatical errors. And yes, I do realize that I should not be complaining about this because my own writing skills are lacking; however I do strive for proper spelling and verb conjugation.
