Why do people buy cheap beds for guest bedrooms?

I'm dreading about going to visit my aunt. Not that we don't like each other or anything like that, we're just very stubborn a lot. But it didn't even dawn on me till today how horrible her couch is. It's the worst thing imaginable, and she doesn't even sit on it. She sits in her free chair she got from best buy when she bought her tv. And my grandmother has a 10+year old lazy boy my grandfather bought her for a birthday or something.

My aunt was in charge of a company that dealt with foam and vinyls. So she had the guys re-upholster the couch and used a very high density foam because of her bad back. Well she went a little too high and now it feels like a rock. And this is my only sleeping option besides the floor.

Kari's parents also have a really bad guest bed. When they moved to Georgia they gave us everything usable and got rid of the rest. Well they bought a cheapish bed that is very uncomfortable to sleep on as well. But we always drive there, so I'm able to bring a mattress topper and a comforter to help give it a little more cushion.

But I'm flying and only bringing a carry on... so I don't have any options for bringing something with me.

Why can't people have comfortable sleeping options for guests?? Both our beds and couch are very comfortable to sleep on. Heck I even make a better bed when I'm camping.

I know some people that do it and they say "If it's too comfortable the guests might never leave":rotfl2:

Could you use an air matress? Or stay in a hotel?

No, I'm flat broke. My aunt is the one paying for me to go out there. She wants me to help her clean up her place. She once said (a while back), that if I cleaned up the living room, she might buy a new couch. I'm wondering if I can do it my first day out there... I can have a new couch for the rest of my stay. :)

Because most hosts don't sleep in those beds....and have no idea. If it is a good friend, I would just tell them politely that they might like to know that there bed could use an extra mattress cover (or whatever). We had a friend who always used old sheets on the guest bed....but the sheets were really uncomfortable. She never used them herself, so she had no idea. I wouldn't do this unless they were good friends. However, if it were my house and I could make my guests more comfortable by simply changing the sheets I used or adding a mattress topper, I would like to know that.

Yes I agree. My moms guest bed has a horible spring that sticks out. Im so glad she sold it. Now my aunt has a huge oversized couch, so blissful when you throw the huge ugly pillows off.

I like squishy and soft. And I don't care what it looks like. My aunt does know her couch is horrible and should've gotten rid of it years ago. She had it redone in vinyl because my sister was originally going to move out to texas to "make a new start" that lasted only a few months. Well she had a little one at the time and my aunt was afraid of the messes.
And Kari's parent's know I hate it because I made a fuss to Kari the first time we were there and bought the mattress topper (it's a think little thing but I leave it folded in half). They bought the same matress but with the pillow top option and they say thiers isn't bad at all...

My best friend's guest bed creaks like no tomorrow. Every little twist and turn causes this loud creak to be heard all throughout the house. And the mattress is hard, the comforter is very thin, and it's always freezing in the room at night. I've taken to taking an extra comforter and sleeping in a sweatshirt and sweatpants. But it's the creaking that drives me crazy! It wakes me up at night!

Our guest bed is really comfy, I actually sleep on the guest bed more than my own bed.

Go to overstock.com and invest in a 3" memory foam topper. Shipping is only $3. Have it mailed directly there. A 3 inch topper will solve your problem, no matter what you sleep on underneath that. Then, you can roll it up and use it for your next visit.

People also have different ideas of what's comfortable. My aunt always lets us use her bed when we stay there and it's like sleeping on a hardwood floor with just a sheet, super hard. She LOVES it and always asks how we liked it and then just raves about it. So it isn't always on purpose.

Sounds like you can give them very useful Christmas gifts this year! :thumbsup2 A mattress topper for your mom, and an air mattress for your aunt! Then you will never have to worry about sleeping situations again.

I don't think I'd buy anything to leave there. I don't visit there often enough. This is my third visit to texas since 2000. The only reason why I visited there last nov. because my aunt didn't want to deal with driving back home and my g'mother refuses to fly now. I only stayed for like 3 days + the two day drive.

I have an egg crate mattress topper, the foam is getting a little worn out since it's like 6 years old now. But that's the basis for my camping bed. Of course when we go tent camping, half the truck bed is filled with the topper and comforters, then the tent and AC. And pretty much I'm out of luck on bringing anything because I can only bring my carry on, plus I have to take the city bus to the airport.

It's just frustrating because my back is killing me after a few nights. Which makes me even more grouchy and more stubborn... and it's a bad mix with my aunt. At least with Kari around I can yell/whine at her, and she can let it go, but she won't be with me.

My sister and brother-in-law's guest room is absolutely gorgeous! They did a really beautiful designer room, chandelier, paint, bed linens, furniture, decor and all. However, the mattress :scared1: it is the hardest thing I have ever slept on!!! Brother -in-law swears that it's a really good mattress :sad2: and that all doctors think that sleeping on a rock hard surface is the best thing for ones back. Well we have debated that one and when I lived in Texas and came to visit a few years a go they couldn't understand why I stayed in a hotel. :rolleyes1 :cloud9:

I know how you feel! I hate hard beds and I love my squishy soft bed that feels so nice. When I am a guest at someone else's house and the bed is so hard that I can break something on it, then I have to double up on blankets to sleep on, it at least makes the bed somewhat better.

We take a air bed to my in-laws because their guest bed is awful!!! I recently bought a new mattress and box springs for my guest bed but they were old and needed replacing. I didn't get the quality I get for our bed but it will be used only 30 nights a year rather than every night.

I suspect many people are reticent to spend money for finer quality beds that will be utilize so infrequently. As others have mentioned, soft vs. hard is a personal preference. I've slept in guest room beds that were way too soft for (my) comfort and I've slept in guess room beds that were way too hard for (my) comfort.

Get a twin air mattress and a pump. It would take up the space of about 2 sweatshirts in your suitcase-or get one when you get there. They are about $17 at Target. You could mail it home when you are done if you don't have suitcase room. Ask yourself why would anyone invest a large amount of money in a nice bed for someone that only visits 3 times in 10 years?

I agree. Why should I spend top dollar on a mattress to be used maybe 20 nights a year? Our guest mattress is our old hand me down when we got a new one. Don't like it? Get a hotel.

Firmness v. soft and squishy is personal preference. I HATE squishy lumpy mattresses and by morning I can't walk because my back hurts so much.

I need a more firm surface. I was annoyed when shopping for our last bed that I couldn't find something w/out a pillow top!

Yes, I'd like my guests to be comfortable but I also don't run a B&B. I don't feel the need to cater to everyone's preference for the few nights a year they stay with me.

And I certainly don't expect my mom to change her too soft or my dad to change his too hard guest bed for me. I'm a grown up. I can't deal with less than my ideal for a few days.
