Why Do Men Have To Back Into Parking Spaces?

Are you preparing for a quick getaway? Just curious.

Ive often wondered the same thing! I asked my BF why he does this as he does it all the time.. He said its a safety thing.. He said at work they always preach to them about parking this way as alot of accidents happen when backing up..

Yup, I back in whenever possible because is much safer than backing out.

I'm another female who backs in all the time....my DH never backs in and it really chaps me when he takes my car and then refuses to park it like he found it.........so, of course when I take his truck I return the favor and back his truck in....but he probably likes it so I'm not sure if he gets the point the way I intended :confused3

DH always backs in. Sometimes it takes him forever to find the *perfect*parking place and then back in so he can make a quick getaway or beat the rush.

I like to pull all the way through if possible. I back in at school 9 out of 10 times though and sometimes back into the garage.
I do have a complex about backing out of of places (there is good reason for it too!!!)

My husband is an ex cop and he was taught to always back into spaces as it's faster when pulling out. I always back into my driveway though at a grocery store or Walmart I pull in.

You know what? maybe that is it....my DH is a police officer, so maybe that is what they do in the police car....so he does it with every car....interesting...I will have to ask him. I never asked before because I figured he was just doing it to annoy me.... :rotfl:

Its easier to back into a spot with my Jeep. Its just easier to get out if I am leaving for work along with everyone else.

My DH sometimes backs into spots with his Expedition. Now thats a feat.

I do parallel sometimes with my car when picking up the kids from school. Some of the other moms see me coming making the turn getting into the spot without any trouble--and they look impressed--some of the dad do as well...they even make comments! Hello, its a parking space, its called driving everyone has to parallel park to get a license!

That drives me nuts... why are people suprised a female can parallel park?

How many females do you know that can parallel park?

Out of all my female friends and family members, I'm the only one who does it EVER. My sister can, but prefers not to.

I can I can.....1st try every single attempt too. I tell ya my dad was a stickler with this stuff. Didn't quite say as much about speeding and the 9 points on my license can prove that but park I can do LOL

i try to find a spot i can drive thru to other side so i can drive out,, if i can't find said spot, i back in to drive out,, thats the safest way to do it. when you back in, the only thing you worry about is the cars parked on side and back of you,, nothing else,, but if i drive in and then back out,, i need to worry about cars coming down the isles,, folks walking and not paying attention to you backing out,, plus there are blind spots backing out so it is a very real possibility that you can hit someone or a car because u did not see them

I back in most of the time. Never did when I drove a sedan but since I started driving a mini-van 7 yrs ago, I back in most of the time. I do it for several reasons. #1 reason is it's easier to see driving forward. With kids, I end up in a lot of parking lots that are infested with children - school, ball fields... I don't want to chance hitting a child while backing up.
As someone else stated, when backing between two parked cars, you have stationary objects to guide you. When backing into the parking lot, cars & people can come from anywhere. It prepares me to leave - soft of like organizing my things the night before instead of in the morning.

I actually had a scare at the grocery store once. I was pulled head into my space. I loaded my groceries into the back of the van via the tailgate. There were no cars in motion when I got into my van. After buckling up, I looked around again. No vehicles, only person in vicinity was a grocery worker who was 5 or 6 cars to my right. I put her in reverse & begin backing up. THUD! It came from the rear passenger side on the corner where there is metal between the back window & the side window. Panic! First thought, I must have hit a little old lady. I instantly became nausous. I got out to check & there is cartman with his train of carts. The cart man was still four spaces away. I let him have it. There was no damage to my car but the idea that I had injured someone was horrible.

Oh just wanted to add. I CAN parrell park too! Did it 2x per day 5 days per week for 4 years. Even DH was impressed & he "drives for a living" (This statement has been banned from his vocabulary under threat of D I V O R C E.)

I tend to drive-thru and if that's not possible, I will back in. I find it much easier to back into a space than to back out at most places. When I exit, I can easily see what's in front of me. I'd hate to hit another car or heaven forbid a person while trying to back out of a parking space.

I can too!!!

DH backs into parking spaces too and he is not a good 'backer upper'. but he insists that he and get out quicker-- but it takes longer for him to back up and get in the spot straight. :confused3 But then again this is the same man that will drive 3 miles out of the way so that he doesn't have to stop and a stop light.

I can parallel park but give me a LOT of room! LOL! :p

this drives me nuts...we park in a garage for work and no matter what every morning I have to wait for someone in front of me to back in their car and most of the time it isn't a straight shot they have to pull up, back up, pull out, straighten up...etc...

Just pull in the darn space already!

I wonder whether the increase in folks "backing in" has any relationship to an increasing number of folks that just don't understand parking lot etiquette. When you are driving through a lot and someone begins to back out - you are suppose to yield to them, not speed up to get past them. Especially with the proliferation of mega-SUVs limiting visibility.

I always back in. The reason for this is because when I learned to drive they specifically taught me how to BACK in, but not how to drive in front-ways.

I guess its supposed to be obvious how to drive in front ways, but I actually find it harder because I never learned how

Not only does DH back in his vehicles, but he also backs in his boat into the slip. :confused3

I used to back in quite often when we lived in Florida but after moving to Utah I will not back in if I even think I will be needing my trunk. It seems every time I back in or pull through the person who parks behind me always parks right at my bumper whether I pull forward a few feet from the dividing line or not thus making it almost impossible to load my groceries...etc.
