Why did you purchase DVC over purchasing Hilton or Marriott timeshare ? It looks like every other timeshare is wayyyy cheaper than DVC by the 1000s$

Two things that made a difference to me: DVC is not in perpetuity, and the resale market. When we bought we didn't think we'd ever sell, but liked that we could. Without those two features, I would not have even considered it.

We have stayed at other timeshare resorts (Hyatt and Marriott) using others' contracts, and did enjoy them though.

Another good example of "The imbalance between supply and demand gives bargain-hunters some great deals." However, that was just listed. Bidding on that will close at probably around $200 or so based on the completed listings for recent CWA auctions of similar size.

Club Access is not even my favorite of the Wyndham ownerships. It has system-wide home resort privileges, but the dues are high. Even so, if I were using CWA points for my upcoming stay in a 1BR at Canterbury, just off Union Square in San Francisco, maintenance fees (aka Dues) would have been south of $200/night, all-in. My actual cost is closer to $140/night. I did a backdoor booking for this through RCI to make that happen, but still.

Since I didn't pay anything to buy the points in the first place, those are my total costs. Sounds pretty good to me, but It's Not Disney, so there is that.

Buying a different timeshare does do any of those.
Well, it can, but it's complicated.

I say this as someone who greatly enjoys an Orlando-area timeshare: for most timeshares even “free” (or $1) is not a good deal.

Our timeshare (old school deeded weeks) came via DW’s parents / my in-laws, and we quite enjoy the property and amenities. But we pay ~$1,200 per week in maintenance fees + property tax. But the resort is always available on RCI, and with last minute deals, you can get a week there for ~$450 without even using points/trading power.

I’ve researched other timeshare systems; the hotel co-branded ones should at least get you a decent deal if you need to use them at a Hilton or Holiday Inn instead of a timeshare, right? Nope, not at all. You can convert, say HGV ClubPoints to Hilton Honors, but the conversion rate means you’re only getting half back in terms of cash value versus what you pay in dues. Resale Marriott contracts require a minimum $2,000 “re-enrollment fee” to be useful. About the only good deal I’ve found so far are ~some~ Holiday Inn resorts, but I’m still looking for the catch.

Meanwhile you can own a DVC resale contract that will hold its value AND give you access to good getaways / last minute deals at normal timeshares through II.

Why did you purchase DVC over another timeshare company like marriott, Hilton, Wyndham. It looks like you can pay 5k for a week of points at Hilton grand vacation club unlike spending $20k+ for a DVC contract. I just purchased direct at Grand Villas and everyone I talk to thinks I’m insane to have spent over 50k on a dvc timeshare. Those people are owners of Hilton grand vacation club.
You can ask them: why buy Hilton when Wyndam can be bought for next to nothing resale?

Our first timeshare was a resale Hilton Grand Vacations that we are really happy with. With the every other year points plan we got, we average 5 or 6 nights a year in a one bedroom for about the same price as a 25 point SSR resale contract. The HGVC system works similar to the DVC system in that points are all equal (for the legacy resorts; as resale owners we don't have access to the old Diamond and Bluegreen resorts), just some locations take more points than others, in the same way a night at VGF costs more than a night at SSR.

We even used RCI to trade into SSR and OKW, so it was DVC's switch to II that spurred us to get DVC. While DVC rooms are smaller, I just love being able to stay on property. With car-seat age kids and bringing a stroller, it's more convenient and I appreciate the theming of the Disney resorts. After we decided to stop cramming a family of 4 into a value room, we realized becoming DVC for studios was cheaper than continuing to stay at POR or CBR. So now we are happy owners of both HGVC and DVC, and use our HGVC for SeaWorld and Myrtle Beach trips, but prefer DVC for Disney trips. The HGVC 1-bedrooms are bigger and nicer than the DVC 1 bedrooms we have stayed in, but it is all about the convenience for us.

Only for USA owners..not international
I’m still thinking they fix that part relatively quickly. Of all the things to geofence, I’m not sure why that one is. I can look at wait times or place a mobile order from (real, not Epcot) Canada. Why not book a LL?

On our most recent trip they were FINALLY! able to text Canadian cell numbers that our ADR table was ready.

That’s strange? This is from November:

Also, while it’s not new, Yak & Yeti or T-Rex which are run by Landry’s instead of Disney are able to text Canadians.

(Very Canadian “sorry” for the tangent btw…)

Americans or international people with access to a VPN. A bunch of them offer free 1 week trials.
I can't buy Genie+ with a VPN (while it is possible to buy an annual pass with a VPN). Genie+ is sold in the app and the app ignores VPN for this, probably using the smartphone location services). What makes you think this will be different for multipass?

If it stays like this (thus allowing international guest only to book what's still available when they arrive on US soil), this would be one of the biggest downgrades for international DVC owners we've ever seen.

We own DVC and Marriott. I might buy Hyatt in the future. DVC is a very unique product. Marriott is more generic with a lot of locations and a pretty good product in my view. Hyatt is a bit more niche. Other timeshares are frequently great if you go there or in their system every year, but you might not want to after the first or second visit.
I am thinking about buying resale Marriott or Hilton, people are just trying to unload them. Any disadvantages to buying them resale like some of the resale restrictions we have with DVC. I don’t mind the DVC ones because I end up in Disney lol.

Thoughts and advice are appreciated!

How many points within a contract gets you a Hilton week? I would love more info on the resale experience as I just stated in my previous post.

why did we buy disney over marriott or hilton? Simple...to go to disney and stay in one or two bedroom units. Also for ease of access to the parks, but having said that, many have had really good luck getting one bedroom units from trades with other time shares

Have you looked at TUG? Many owners of Marriott, Hilton and DVC there who can answer these questions for you. Marriott and Hilton each have their own forum, as does DVC, but there are a lot who own multiple systems. https://tugbbs.com/forums/
