Why DCL cost more

You are welcome to google all these things yourself. There is no one source I know all this from. Lots of info out there.

:goodvibes I replied to a news site the other day and someone wanted me to link my info, and I told him the same thing.

Just like here on the DIS with no one using the Search function, drives me nuts to see the same question asked over and over and over.......

If it's perceived value, then people aren't REALLY getting something better....they're just paying more for the same thing, right? :confused3

Absolutely! Perceived value is king in the business world. For them, their number one priority is the bottom line--namely making people buy at the highest price for the lowest cost to the business. Perception of value (such as "name brands"--you think a little alligator on your polo really makes it a better product? ;) ) is the golden ticket.

If you get a chance to read Feakonomics, or see the documentary, it is very well written about/explained there for anyone interested in looking a little deeper.

Disney Rules ;) I certainly don't buy name brands just for the name. Out of the three other cruise lines I have sailed (4 if you count Big Red Boat) I find that Disney does offer a better quality for me and our family. Can't comment on the others.

I can answer your question about that week in February for this year - it is Mardi GRAS in Louisiana - and I think Disney has figured that our. It used to be a good time to go but now Disney puts the high prices on that week. Also whatever week presidents day falls in is also another high priced week - I think kids up north must have this week off - it is always really crowded.

Mardi Gras doesn't have anything to do with it. It is the week of President's day that is always a very busy week(Mardi Gras always falls around that week). Schools up north are usually on a break either the week before or of PD. Disney knows mid Feb is always when northerners are due for a break in their weather too. Memorial Day week before and/or after is never nearly as busy as President's Day week. The Daytona500 always falls at that time to which seems to draw a huge crowd to Disney. The parks are loaded with Nascar clothing.

Some have made that point here before. My opinion has been that with Disney Cruises, for every $1 in added value you get, you pay $5.
I think most of the Disney difference is intangible. How do you put a dollar value on being on "Mickey's boat?". I think accommadations and food are easier to compare on a dollar for dollar basis.

The Disney name has value for many people, value they are willing to pay extra for. There are other cruises that offer nearly the same thing for less.
Perceived value is what it is. Why do people buy a Lexus instead of the same car with a Toyota name? A Cadillac Escalade instead of a Chevy Tahoe? An Infinity instead of a Nissan? A Lincoln instead of a Ford? Perceived value, that's why.
And in my experience, Disney cruisers are more likely to take their kids out of school for a vacation than folks who cruise other lines, which is why Disney ships tend to be fuller during non-peak weeks.

And living on this board for 9 years, it is amazing to me how many random weeks school kids get off these days. When I was a kid, we got 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week at Easter. Now in many parts of the country they get a fall break (or Jersey week, good lord why that isn't done the week before school I don't know) 3 weeks at Christmas, a week for Presidents Day, and Easter Week.

I have to disagree with you about the "perceived value" concept. A Lexus is NOT the same as a Toyota...and so on. The higher end vehicles are made by the same companies as the others you mentioned, but the vehicles themselves are definitely nicer. Sitting in and driving a Lexus is a far cry from being in a Toyota. (not that there's anything wrong with Toyota)It's the design, the details, and the service you get with those nice vehicles. IMO, just like comparing a Disney Cruise to the other cruiselines!!(not that theres anything wrong with other cruiselines ;))

I do agree with you about the school breaks however. Geez! They are always on a break!!! Wouldn't it be great if they could grow up and get jobs that allowed for the same breaks(lots of kids do want to be teachers ;))

Yup. That's why you can buy a gallon of store brand milk for $2.39, or a brand name gallon of milk for $3.99......and people will buy the $3.99 milk even though if you look at the coding on the jug, both came from the same dairy, same production line, same cows, on the same day......only the brand label is different. For some, the name on that label is worth $1.60 to them.

I beg to differ! You've apparently never been caught in the Mardi Grad parade to Disney that week ;) :)

Actually, I think it's all of the above.... It's a week that many states have a break due to all sorts if reasons. Not Texas though.... We have to go to school :(

Florida doesn't have breaks then either, hence the reason our passes are not blocked out during that time frame.

Pretty sure that Mardi Gras parade, is simply a parade of everybody up north who is traveling down on vacation during that time.

Then the Lexus marketing folks have done their job with you.

The reality:
Camry 3.5 Liter V6 268 horse power. 109.3 inch wheel base
Lexus ES 350 3.5 Liter V6 268 horse power. 109.3 inch wheel base.

But you go to the auto parts store where they cross reference parts numbers, other than trim items, a Lexus is a Toyota, and a Toyota is a Lexus.

:) :) :) Not good at directions, but can you head south from the north on an east to west road?! ;)

Just playin! I sure wish we had more school breaks.

I think the "brand loyality" is more about familiarity. We know we will have a great cruise on DCL but any other line is a gamble. Likely we'd have a good time with others too but if we don't have to, why risk it? We only have so much time off work/school.

I drive a Ford. I like Ford and I trust Ford. Can I get a good truck at GM? Probably. By if I'm happy with Ford, why risk changing. The same is true with DCL.

Personally, I'm and Acura girl ;) Marketing has nothing to do with the upholstery of a seat being nicer(or standard leather for that matter) or the dash just carrying a nicer appearence with more bells and whistles that come standard. You are paying for a nicer product. Yes, the engine may be comparable, but the appearance is hands down better. If a Camry is at a stop light next to a Lexus ES...all eyes will probably be on the Lexus. Just like when a Disney ship is in port next to a Carnival...all eyes are on the Disney ship. And like I said before...the service. Can someone please point me in the direction of a Chevy dealer that will drive a loaner vehicle to my house and pick up my car so it can be taken in for a routine oil change, and return it same day fully detailed free of charge. Hey, I don't need to go to the auto parts store. Their "marketing" has kept me from having to do that. They handle all that for me :) That is what we pay more for!!

you are a gal after my own heart.

disney has a premium product, its up to the consumer if they want to spend more for it.

the car analogy makes me chuckle. I don't even want a Lexus or Acura because I like a connected sporty visceral drive and not a detached primarily luxurious one. My stable includes BMW, Porsche and Ferrari. The service you mention is wonderful.

The "shell and heart" are the same but the amenities are WAY different.:thumbsup2

You state items as fact and then refuse to back them up. I'll take that to mean that they are not facts.

Have you ever ordered wine in a restaurant? Or a beer? If so than you know a 200%+ markup is standard. Take a look at the wine lists for any restaurant, cruise ship or hotel then head to your local liqueur store and you can see the price difference for yourself.

Actually, the Chevy dealer I bought my Suburban from used to do that. He doesn't own the dealership anymore, and yes, he sells Lexus now. :rotfl2:
You're correct though, you paid for it, it wasn't free.
