I replied to a news site the other day and someone wanted me to link my info, and I told him the same thing. If it's perceived value, then people aren't REALLY getting something better....they're just paying more for the same thing, right?![]()

For them, their number one priority is the bottom line--namely making people buy at the highest price for the lowest cost to the business. Perception of value (such as "name brands"--you think a little alligator on your polo really makes it a better product?) is the golden ticket.
If you get a chance to read Feakonomics, or see the documentary, it is very well written about/explained there for anyone interested in looking a little deeper.
I certainly don't buy name brands just for the name. Out of the three other cruise lines I have sailed (4 if you count Big Red Boat) I find that Disney does offer a better quality for me and our family. Can't comment on the others.I can answer your question about that week in February for this year - it is Mardi GRAS in Louisiana - and I think Disney has figured that our. It used to be a good time to go but now Disney puts the high prices on that week. Also whatever week presidents day falls in is also another high priced week - I think kids up north must have this week off - it is always really crowded.

The Disney name has value for many people, value they are willing to pay extra for. There are other cruises that offer nearly the same thing for less.
Perceived value is what it is. Why do people buy a Lexus instead of the same car with a Toyota name? A Cadillac Escalade instead of a Chevy Tahoe? An Infinity instead of a Nissan? A Lincoln instead of a Ford? Perceived value, that's why.
And in my experience, Disney cruisers are more likely to take their kids out of school for a vacation than folks who cruise other lines, which is why Disney ships tend to be fuller during non-peak weeks.
And living on this board for 9 years, it is amazing to me how many random weeks school kids get off these days. When I was a kid, we got 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week at Easter. Now in many parts of the country they get a fall break (or Jersey week, good lord why that isn't done the week before school I don't know) 3 weeks at Christmas, a week for Presidents Day, and Easter Week.

I beg to differ! You've apparently never been caught in the Mardi Grad parade to Disney that week![]()
Actually, I think it's all of the above.... It's a week that many states have a break due to all sorts if reasons. Not Texas though.... We have to go to school![]()
Say what?![]()
I have to disagree with you about the "perceived value" concept. A Lexus is NOT the same as a Toyota...and so on. The higher end vehicles are made by the same companies as the others you mentioned, but the vehicles themselves are definitely nicer. Sitting in and driving a Lexus is a far cry from being in a Toyota. (not that there's anything wrong with Toyota)It's the design, the details, and the service you get with those nice vehicles. IMO, just like comparing a Disney Cruise to the other cruiselines!!(not that theres anything wrong with other cruiselines)
I do agree with you about the school breaks however. Geez! They are always on a break!!! Wouldn't it be great if they could grow up and get jobs that allowed for the same breaks(lots of kids do want to be teachers)
boogabuzz said:Pretty sure that Mardi Gras parade, is simply a parade of everybody up north who is traveling down on vacation during that time.
Not good at directions, but can you head south from the north on an east to west road?!
Then the Lexus marketing folks have done their job with you.
The reality:
Camry 3.5 Liter V6 268 horse power. 109.3 inch wheel base
Lexus ES 350 3.5 Liter V6 268 horse power. 109.3 inch wheel base.
But you go to the auto parts store where they cross reference parts numbers, other than trim items, a Lexus is a Toyota, and a Toyota is a Lexus.
Marketing has nothing to do with the upholstery of a seat being nicer(or standard leather for that matter) or the dash just carrying a nicer appearence with more bells and whistles that come standard. You are paying for a nicer product. Yes, the engine may be comparable, but the appearance is hands down better. If a Camry is at a stop light next to a Lexus ES...all eyes will probably be on the Lexus. Just like when a Disney ship is in port next to a Carnival...all eyes are on the Disney ship. And like I said before...the service. Can someone please point me in the direction of a Chevy dealer that will drive a loaner vehicle to my house and pick up my car so it can be taken in for a routine oil change, and return it same day fully detailed free of charge. Hey, I don't need to go to the auto parts store. Their "marketing" has kept me from having to do that. They handle all that for me

You state items as fact and then refuse to back them up. I'll take that to mean that they are not facts.
