Why choose DVC over other timeshares?

Thanks so much for your help! I linked my DH to this thread and at 10:30 this morning he called to tell me that we are in the process of becoming DVC members. I am so excited that I can hardly stand it!!!! :woohoo: :bounce: :jumping1:

congratulations~~~

my only comment it is on Disney property. so all the onsite stuff apply to your timeshares~~~~

DME, EMH, dinning, package deliver, etc...

Just make sure you're buying for the right reasons. Those are to use the points at DVC and not for long weekends. If you're looking at other options that are affecting your decision, you may still want to reconsider your purchase.

Let them enjoy their decision.

OP, congrats!

One of the many reasons we chose DVC is the fact that other timeshares spend so much time and effort trying to lure people to their resorts with free or near free resort stays in exchange for the dreaded 90 minute sales pitch, where the used car-esque salespeople turn up the screws on people who probably never intend or are in no position financially to buy. Some of these people are able to hold their ground, while others walk away with a new timeshare and that 'deer in the headlights' look.
Now I know that Disney also budgets lots of money getting people in the parks to check out DVC, but once there the salespeople let the resorts sell themselves, with no high pressure sales tactics (at least that was my experience).
I always tell my wife that I refuse to do buisness with snake oil salemen. I do not appreciate it when people can't take 'no' for an answer, and I didn't have to worry about that with Disney.
I could go on about cleanliness, attention to detail, service, etc., that I get with Disney, but this was one of the biggest reasons for me.

Purchased in 2000, have had 4 family vacations and the wife & I have had 5 vacations. Paid a total of $80,000 for 1000 points and could sell for $90,000, I think that was a great investment, but how can you put a price tag on the family time.y kids and grandkids think it's the greatest. :cheer2: :cool1: :dance3:

That's what the vulture says at the end of Thelma & Louise.

If you love Disney then DVC is for you.

No need to question T&L's decision either......

Even the vultures need nourishment! It's a circle of life thing.

Have I missed the announcement that Disney has absolutely no intention of building more DVC resorts with later expiration dates? Reading these boards, it sounds as if 2054 is a finite ending to the DVC concept. With all the talk (yes, I know they're just rumors right now) about VAK, VCR, maybe VDL and other locations, if they go ahead with these, why wouldn't DVD extend the expiration dates of those as they did with SSR vs. the earlier DVC resorts? :confused3

I agree with you. Also, Disney must be considering opportunities to extend the existing contracts. I just did a DVC survey and there were a few questions on would we be interested in buying and extention to current contracts and also for how long of an extention 10-15, 15-20, etc. years.

If it's the right decision for them, absolutely. I'd rather them question it now than later and hopefully make their decision on the right information for their needs. Not simply because this site s so pro DVC and may have swayed their decision. Not only is DVC not for everyone, it's not right for most people overall.

timeshare in general is a niche product. It is not for everyone, nor will it ever be.

In reading their posts, I get the sense that they made the best decision for them.

Agreed, but I didn't get the same feeling from their posts.

Hi guys! OP here and I can tell you already that this is the right decision for us. For one thing, I haven't stopped smiling in two days and I don't really even have a trip planned yet! I just love having the assurance that I'll be back at the World soon. The number 1 selling point for us was the fact that my DD6 and I will be able to take mother/daughter trips for years to come. I hate driving in unfamiliar places, so I wouldn't have used a timeshare to anywhere else. Disney has all we need without me ever having to drive.

BTW, would this work and is it even ok to do? (Flame away if you feel the need, I just got to thinking about it and was curious...) What if I bought a non-expiring pass for this next year and we use it for 6 days. Then, I go in July '07 and use an annual pass and go again in June '08 on the same annual pass. Then, I would use my 4 days left on the unexpiring later in '08 or during summer of '09. Is that ok? I'm not sure that it's ok to buy an annual pass if I already have the other tickets available to me. It just seems that if there's a year when I'll be able to go twice during the years time, then it would be the most beneficial. Of course, that's assuming that an annual pass lasts 365 days after the first use, which I'm not sure about either.

I'm one of those who have more than one timeshare. I bought DVC because I could stay whatever amount of time worked for me. My original timeshare, in Kissimmee I had to use for a full week and pay an additional fee to Interval International in order to make it flexible via trading. These days I use it only for trading but I do trade into Orlando if I know my trip wont be Disney only.

Hopefully you all are still reading the thread because you really shouldn't buy DVC if you are planning to stay anywhere other than a DVC resort. Cash or another timeshare would be cheaper. And depending where you live buying a timeshare close to home (not Orlando) would mean you can always trade into Orlando into any timeshare and probably would have a pretty good shot at a trade for vacation in another location that you love. No it wouldn't be DVC but maybe it might be Bonnet Creek (as close as you can get without the Welcome Home!). I've used the other timeshare to trade into Stowe, VT, Atlantic City, Hilton Head (Disney's Hilton Head btw) twice, recently Gatlinburg and many times into Orlando. Making those same trades or trades into nearby locations using DVC would be significantly more expensive in terms of the points you'd need to use (points have a cash value).

To sum it up. Do your research before buying ANY timeshare. DVC will hurt a lot less than other resorts if you have buyers remorse but it'll still hurt. Plus if you put your mind to it you probably can find a non-Orlando trader for next to nothing leaving you thousands of dollars to rent points from DVC members on the cheap. No one has mentioned this so far but perusing the Timeshare Users Group board is a good place to start... www.tug2.net

As long as you have all the info YOU need to make your best decision, that's all I care about. As for the passes, that will work. You should look at the overall cost to make sure it's not cheaper just buying non expiring passes for each trip you were planning on using the non expiring pass for.

I disagree with the just use at DVC mentality.

My way of thinking is that once I bought it, it really did not matter to me which was the absolute most cost effective use of my points. I have them and I have to use them. If it costs a few dozen extra points to pull off a great vacation, I am not going to worry about it.

I am not going to sit there and worry that I am not getting every penny out of my membership.

Life is too short to play with spreadsheets all day! I'd rater be on Maui drinking a martini.....

To each his or her own
