Who's ready for 'Mad Men'????? {spoiler discussion}

I'm betting the Au Pair gets pregnant.;)

I'm thinking she'll file rape charges. Mad Men always has topics hat were current for the 60's/ They may want to show how women who filed charges were made to look like they were asking for it.

I don't think we'll see rape charges; she's an au pair -- she would be worried that she would be deported if she did that, because "moral turpitude" was grounds for exclusion. I think that storyline was there just to remind us of what a heel Pete still is, because he had been looking rather more human of late.

Joan knows very well that that was NOT Trudy's dress, and that will come back to bite Pete somehow, I just know it.

The au pair reminded me very much of the early Peggy. When it comes to physical taste, Pete likes his women rather earthy and unpolished, but in his position that type would never do as a wife. In his fantasies he sees himself as a take-what-I-want macho guy. (That business of peeling off the shirt, tie, and undershirt over his head in one pull was important, I think -- it sort of looked like he was peeling off a rubber mask.)

Irony again. The person Pete fantasizes about being is the person that Don used to be (or would have been, had he not literally become someone else when he was 18.) Pete's fantasy persona actually reminds me a bit of Archie, only better dressed.

This is the sixties. Rape was harder to prove mostly because of male attitudes at the time, plus being a foreigner, she'd be more afraid to come forward and threaten her status in the US. Thank goodness things are different forty years later and there is more sympathy for the victim.

What the heck is up with ICE QUEEN betty? Last night she was warm with her DH in Rome, and once did a little "Happy Dance" in front of her DH about the Town meeting-but otherwise seems wound tight!!

.

otoh, you can see how she'd be stifled by her home life, when she is perfectly capable of getting the attention she craves from everyone but her hubby, and obviously has talents (fluent Italian, who knew?) that are languishing in her current situation.

Fluent Italian-- she was a model in Milan -- I think she mentioned it a few times in Season One.

You may be on to something. Betty may not know how much but isn't she aware that Don made a nice sum of money when Sterling Cooper sold out to the Brits? Other than the redecorating there is no evidence that Don has spent any of it. Maybe she thinks they should flaunt their wealth more, even though she told her brother to "quit counting other people's money" I think she wants people to know she has it.

Oh you know Betty wants people to know she has lots of money. But, money won't be enough for her no, she wants POWER. Did you see how excited she got when she was working with that guy from the governor's office? She experienced a taste of power and now she's even more hungry than ever.

LOL...'Good work, sycophants'.

Never expected to hear that on Sesame Street!

That made me giggle too... Maybe S is the letter of the day?

As for the episode, you can tell that Betty is so "over" being a suburban housewife and it is killing her to be home with children when she could be doing so much more.

Freidan's Feminine Mystique should become a topic in the show. I would not be suprised if Betty reads it voraciously and starts to do paid work... but Don probably won't have it. Feminine Mystique got published Feb 63 and are we in August 63? Why hasn't Betty picked it up yet? Could you imagine that book becoming Junior League material?

I have been wondering if Gene is Don's baby. Remember at the end of last season, Betty hooked up with some guy in a bar in his office to get back at Don for cheating on her.

Also why is Don always getting himself into bad situations like doing drugs with the couple he picked up? Was he going to have a threesome or just watch them or was he just completely out of it? I used to think he was hot, but now I think he is kinda creepy. But Betty is definitely an ice queen. She is the most unloving mother. And her daughter is so cute. The little girl that plays Sally is really good.

He was going to get high with them; that's why he went to the motel room; it wasn't really so much about sex this time.

He gets into these situations because his response to stress is always to run away from Don for awhile, and he tends to instinctively run back to his roots, to the wrong side of the tracks.

Getting rolled was a wake up in more ways than one -- it told him that he's gone too far from that world, that he's no longer as young as he once was, and that he's not as street-savvy as he still fancies himself to be. He failed to see it coming, and that means that he was still Don in that motel room, not Dick.

Honestly, I think that getting rolled added to the inevitability of caving in and signing the contract, Bert's veiled threat notwithstanding. He has been Don for so long now that Don is more real than Dick is -- Dick has no present reality except at the real Mrs. Draper's house in California. He's going to have to resign himself pretty soon to the fact that it really isn't a double life anymore; he is trapped in his illusory self, and the rabbit-hole that leads back to the reality is closing fast.

That was a great explanation. I love the way you put it.

But what about the baby? Is it his?

Yes, the baby is Don's. It happened when they went down to Philly to visit when Gene was just out of the hospital; Betty hadn't taken her diaphragm with her because they were separated, and she had not intended to sleep with Don. (Remember that she insisted that he sleep on the floor?)

The pickup in the bar was pre-meditated, she almost certainly used the diaphragm that night, because she knew before she went out that she was looking to do some cattin', as we used to say where I grew up.

I thought she already knew she was pregnant when she slept with the guy at the bar...

As for Pete feeling "guilty" and telling his wife (sort of), was this because he feared the truth coming out from the neighbor? Did he feel guilty when he slept with Peggy, or was he not married yet? :confused3 (sorry, I never saw any of Season 1)

So Sal's gone now?
I cant believe it!

And that wacky Conrad Hilton-I wonder if they had to get an "OK" from the Hilton family to show a real person , as himself, on the show?
:confused3

I hope Sal's not gone for good.

Betty and Don drive me crazy! They were all over each other in Rome, then when they came back Betty turned Don down and was pining for other guy (but then turned him down), and Don drove me crazy going after that teacher!

Will they ever learn?

I agree

And sorry-that guy Betty's flipped for is ugly next to cutie-Don;)

Anyone other than me find it ironic that the women at the fundraiser were discussing segregation and how horrible the South was as the black housekeeper is walking up to take the tray from Betty?

So no Sal and no Joan ..little to no Peggy and Pete hacking away on a cigarette... No Ken, and very little Paul.

It was a very sad episode. Don is now trapped at SC at Conrad Hilton's beck and call and Betty was trying to have an affair with the governor assistant.

I would have never guessed that Mr. Lucky Strike Jr. felt that way. It certainly was never shown in Season 1 and 2 in any other scenes. I felt so bad for Sal. my heart was breaking! Sal is one of my favorite characters and I would hate to lose him forever.

In my own perfect world, I would love to see Joan, Sal, Peggy and even Pete start their own little ad agency and compete with Sterling Cooper.
