Who's ready for 'Mad Men'????? {spoiler discussion}

I'd agree that Peter is absolutely NOT to be trusted with this particular secret, but I don't think he actually wants Don's job. He isn't creative (with a capital C); he's a sales hack. What he wants is Roger's spot, and up until the British came he was confident that he would get it eventually because Cooper thinks that Pete's family connections are especially valuable. Whether or not the British agree with that assessment remains to be seen.

I find Ken to be an absolutely fascinating character. EVERYTHING just seems to fall into his lap without his trying very hard, because dog-gone it, people just like him. He doesn't come off as smarter than anyone else, but somehow he's always in contention for power. He seems to be the quintessential good-looking, popular tall blond WASP for whom things just somehow fall into place. Weiner being Weiner, it can't be that simple, and I'm dying to know what the catch is.

Sal's storyline has been in the works since season one with the ad exec. Sal (while one of my favorite characters) has now joined the cheating spouses club.

So Don's real name is not Richard, which is what I thought Dick was from. That story was a shocker! I wasn't suprised by it though because it has been known that the mother was a prostitute for a long time.

Go, Peggy Go! I have a feeling that that Peggy's secretary will be havinga hard time working for a woman.

I think my comments may have been misconstrued. I knew Sal was gay. As mentioned before, that was exposed as early as season one. What I found surprising was the liaison with the bellboy. It just seemed to happen out of the blue. Unlike the storyline with Don and the stewardess, where she blatantly flirted with him.

Sal's call for help with the ac seemed bogus. I think he was planning to have sex if the "repairman" was interested which tells me he isn't new to this.

I am brand new to the show... watched season 2 On Demand this past week to get ready...

Since I am a newbie, when Sal invited Kevin to his house for dinner (last season), I was STUNNED that he was married... I guess I just assumed that Sal was openly gay ;)

And what happened to Duck????????????? I thought he was supposed to be the President of S/C post merger and he was nowhere to be found this week :confused3

But it is a great show and I am enjoying it!!! Is there any more gossip from Season 1 that I am missing? (I know about Sterling and Ms. red headed lead secretary(can't think of her name just now), and I know about Peggy and Pete (and the baby)).

Actually, Bryan Batt did an interview this week in which he said that it was intended as an unplanned first experience: http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/409342_tvgif17.html

... He was so totally caught off guard, but one thing that's clear is that this is his first time. It's the first time he's ever had those kind of relations, and when you think about it, he really doesn't get that far. ...

As for being stunned that Sal was married, I was too -- but not because I thought that he was openly gay; in 1960 that would have been a career-killer anywhere outside the theatre or fashion world. I was stunned because I thought that he was maintaining the closet role as the elusive hard-to-get office bachelor; there were several scenes in the first season where women were throwing themselves at him, and he was not using the existence of a wife to deflect them, which would have been the easiest way if he had one. Of course, Weiner doesn't like to make a big deal out of weddings, so it is entirely possible that he married in the time gap between seasons 1 & 2, as both Roger and Joan did in the time gap between seasons 2 & 3.

Hmm, ok but he sure looked experienced- no fumbling.

AFAIK, Bryan Batt is actually gay.. so it may be life imitating art, so to speak.

As for season one, Peggy's pregnancy was sort of played out for the viewers but the big reveal wasn't until the last episode that she actually had the baby. Peggy began as Don's secretary and quickly climbed the ranks by working hard and not by sleeping around (like some have suspected).

Don had affairs beginning with ep. 1, season 1.. the set up was you anticipated Midge was actually his wife and it was a shocker when January Jones was actually his wife.

I saw this on TVguide.com. I liked the lung cancer line.

Now that Mad Men is back, what can you tell us about the rest of the season? — Paul
ADAM: Betty's ailing father (Ryan Cutrona) will visit, and he'll have a run-in with his granddaughter. Peggy is personally affected by a new campaign. And Don and Betty roll out the welcome wagon when Mr. Pryce's icy wife (Embeth Davidtz) arrives from across the pond. Also: everyone gets lung cancer. Oh sorry, that's in 1980.

I would have liked to have seen Pete and Peggy together in the last episode. The revelation about the baby had to have strained their working relationship.

I once worked in an advertising agency and there were a number of people having affairs there. The partners also kept alcohol in their offices. Not quite as many smokers as on Mad Med though.

I've skipped through this thread, but I just wanted to ask a question...
Is this the type of show that I can pick up now? I've never watched before, but I keep hearing great things! Will I be totally lost if I start watching this season? I've already Tivo'ed the season premiere, so just wanted to see if it's worth watching. Thanks!

The "previously on" at the beginning of the episode nicely sums up season 2... Season 1 & 2 can be rented at Netflix, Blockbuster or they might even be on Demand.

The flashback in this episode may not make much sense but we (others on the thread) can bring you up to speed quickly

Gotcha... and I felt the same way!

And I love that we were able to be surprised by it, because they are so tight-lipped on spoilers. IMO, shows would be so much more fun to watch if we didn't know what was going to happen.

Also, there are a number of sites where there are text recaps for every episode. You can bring yourself up to date very quickly on who is who by just reading them; it will take you about an hour as long as you don't go to Television Without Pity. (THOSE will take you DAYS to read, as they are just about verbatim, AND have interspersed commentary.)

Just be warned that MM is very much a character-driven ensemble show, and it has a glacial pace compared to most TV shows. A lot of people cannot stand how slowly it moves. Personally, I savor every second just for the art direction.

In know. He's from my hometown, New Orleans.

I read so many great reviews that i bought Season One. Watched it before Season 2 began.

I love, love the authenticity of this show _the clothes, the way most women were "just housewives" and the working girl sacrificed home and family. It is the best show on TV , IMO.

(There is a current article in Vanity Fair on how far the creator goes for his authenticity-even researching what airline flew to that city that year-and that's what seats layout and stewardesses are on the pretend plane)

This is actually one of the added features on the Season 1 DVD's. They researched right down to the train time tables. It is one of the many things that make this show so special.

I wonder if Metro North ran as well in the 60s as it does now....Not! :rotfl2:

I read that too - that if Don says he's taking the 5:18 home, they checked old timetables to make sure that there actually was a 5:18 train home to Ossning at that time.

So with last night's episode, did anyone notice the date that Roger's daughter is planning her wedding? November 23, 1963 - the day after the JFK assassination!

Good episode last night. I have a feeling the Brits are going to be running SC into the ground by the end of this season.

I didn't catch that about the wedding date... should be interesting!! Those Brits are driving me nuts.
