Who's ready for 'Mad Men'????? {spoiler discussion}

Last night's episode was great. I can't wait for next season. And I truly hope that next season little miss Betty 'you aren't good enough for me' Draper gets her comuppense. I felt so bad for those kids.

Me too!

My favorite line last night was when Pryce tells Sinjin "ok, happy holidays then" after getting screamed at and fired. He was so matter of fact about it. I'm enjoying watching his character evolve.

Great episode. The acting is excellent. I love the girl that plays the Draper daughter.

As far as Joan, I had just turned to my wife and wondered why they didn't pull Joan in, when she walks into the office and pulls it all together.

Was I the only one thinking it odd that Don didn't stay with the kids for the 6 weeks Betty is staying in Reno?:confused3

I REALLY feel Peggy is going to be a major "Idea " person in the new agency!!:thumbsup2

She very probably didn't tell him that she was leaving them with Carla the entire time. Even so, the current work situation is going to demand a lot of really long work days; he might have thought it best.

I was MUCH more shocked to see Henry on the plane with her -- that was very much a no-no in "go-to-Reno" situations. His mere presence there would give Don standing to file in NY on adultery grounds.

The interesting question will be, since Henry has gone to Nevada -- will they return married? The Draper kids have never met Henry, well at least not for more than a moment, but Betty being Betty, I wouldn't put it past her. (Of course, the REALLY interesting question will be, does she actually stick it out in Reno long enough to get the divorce, or does something blow up in her face?) If she does marry Henry, I see boarding school in the Draper kids' futures.

I was actually very happy to get back to the ad business; the show was veering off into the personal too much for my taste. I liked a lot of things; especially all of the little stage business with the keys. (And bye-bye Pauly!) I was a bit surprised that they didn't take Kurt & Smitty -- they have no one in the startup group who can draw, unless it turns out that either Cooper or Joan can. They could now try to lure Sal, but I don't think that they will, at least not formally, because the Lucky Strike account is their lynchpin -- they still cannot afford to offend that client in any way.

I also really loved Lane getting to stick it to PP&L -- and St. John having the gall to accuse him of lack of character.

.

Since they were more concerned with getting the accounts away from the old agency, and they are really just starting with nothing, it could be the others will be hired later. Or its a way to get new cast members:confused3

I think a part of next season is going to involve the 'recruiting' of key members of the Sterling Cooper 'family' into the new firm.

Oh, I agree with that; I'm sure there will be new blood -- it's just that without anyone who can draw a storyboard, how are they going to do any pitches? They need income right away, and if they can't do decent campaign pitches that is going to be a hard row to hoe.

BTW, everyone -- last night's ep reminded me of just what a GREAT comic actor Robert Morse really is. If you haven't seen How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, do yourself a favor and rent it -- you'll instantly know the symbolism of his being part of this show ... and you'll laugh yourself silly, too.

I didn't think it odd at all. You have to remember that the show is set in the 1960s. Most dads were not as involved with the day to day activities of their children as they are today.
Seeing Henry on the plane makes me think the baby is his.

According to the show she didn't meet him until Derby Day; May 4, 1963. (That creepy belly-touch scene while she waited for Trudy outside the ladies' room at Roger's club.) The baby was born on June 21st.

Ok, thanks.

I agree!! This show is so well written and cast. I watched tonight's episode twice.

So did I! It was a great episode! Too many good lines to count...my favorite was Lane: "Very good. Happy Christmas!" Love it. :lmao:

Did anyone else also notice that Pete left the SC offices with the rifle he got in Season 1 slung over his shoulder? I thought that was great.

Roger was just too much in this episode - loved the "Are you reading your will? I want the Cadillac." I also loved when Harry thought they were kidding about starting their own agency, "Yes, it's a joke. Happy Birthday."

And I absolutely loved it when he asked Peggy to get him coffee and she said no. Her scenes with Don were brilliant.

Trudy was a riot in this episode too - when she tried to call Pete into the other room when he started to lose his temper. And Pete got the Clearasil account back - you know she had to have called her father for him.

And ugh, Betty. On one hand, he's lied to her, he's cheated on her, you really can't blame her for leaving him. But she is a spoiled brat, Don was totally right about her. She wanted someone who can treat her like the princess she thinks she is. Nice of her to leave the kids on Christmas (taking the baby, who's obviously been her favorite) to run off to Reno. I can't stand her!

But it was a terrific finale - I need to get seasons 1 & 2 on blu-ray now so I start them over again. So sad the season is over!

Ugh!!! I didn't even think about that -- Christmas. So much for the kids 2 Christmases eh?

Yes, I hate her too.

My thoughts exactly. I love how they've written Peggy's life and lines. :thumbsup2

My only complaint about this show is the SHORT seasons. What's with that? I understand when it's a new show and the network wants to test the waters, but Mad Men now has a proven track record with a huge following. What gives? :confused3

It's hugely expensive to produce, because of all the necessary set dressing and costumes, and the time that Weiner takes over making sure that everything is perfect. Also, AMC can't raise the rates too much because they gave BMW a long-term contract as principal sponsor.

Speaking of Pete and the gun, did you notice that when Don and Roger came over, Trudy was putting out snacks in the infamous chip n' dip tray? (For latecomers, Pete got the rifle when he had to take store credit after returning the duplicate chip n' dip tray that they got as a wedding gift.)

Also, some prankster had added an "F" to the sign on the door of the Art Dept. Tee-hee.

It occurred to me last night to wonder whether the sandwiches scene was actually the first time that Peggy and Trudy had actually spoken to one another. I think that Trudy did drop by the office once early on, but I don't remember if Peggy ever had occasion to speak to her.

I do not trust Henry Francis. I have a suspicion that he will turn out to be a very controlling person, and Betty may discover that during her time in Reno. BTW, Lots of reviews that I've been reading online are speculating that Betty is only going out to get set up in an apt. in Reno and then will come back for the holidays, but it didn't work that way. Part of the drill in doing the six weeks' residency period was making sure that there were witnesses who could verify that you were actually there the whole time. Reno had a huge cottage industry in resort-like furnished residential setups for people who were waiting out their six weeks, and they had communal dining rooms and such, so that you would see and be seen by several people. Since most men could not take that much time off from work, most of the residents were women, and the residences were set up to be safe for them. The fancier "ranches" catered to the rich and famous, and were deliberately remote in order to keep the press out.

Maybe someone will take the older kids out to Reno to do Christmas at a Dude Ranch once they get out of school? (I'm thinking that school was the reason that the older ones were left behind while the baby went along; not a case of favoritism.)

This is really one of my top five favorite shows of all time, just for all those "little moments" that have already been mentioned. For example, I loved the mirroring of when Betty and cheating boy met outside the ladies room for the first time when she was pregnant coming around in last weeks episode to when she leaves the ladies restroom at the wedding and sees both DH and CB waiting "for her". And I don't think the baby is CB's, but he was seemingly obsessed with her pregnancy (asking to touch her when she was pregnant), so I'm not surprised she brought the baby with. I'm sure she and her future DIL will get along great (not!).

And I meant to add, what makes this such a great show is how well developed and acted the MINOR characters are. My favorites?

Pete's wife and Don's daughter.

That reminds me of the scenes from the original version of "The Women"

Mad Men never resumes right after we leave them-so no doubt next season , betty will be remarried and the Advertising staff will be in real offices-so we'll never know what happened that christmas with the kids.

Mad Men returns this summer for its fourth season. The schedule isn't announced yet, but it will probably premiere on July 18.

I should have waited a day... the release came out today. The premiere is July 25, with Rubicon, the new AMC series that will be on before Mad Men each Sunday night, beginning on August 1.
