Who's Goofy??

To make it easier, you could get little ziploc type baggies and put a serving of the blocks in those and pin them to the belt. That way you'd have what you wanted already in an easy to open package. I got a package of about 100 little bags at hobby lobby for $2 in the jewelry craft section. I use that size bag to carry salt pills, but you could definitely fit in some blocks if you wanted.

I did this for a recent race. It was a bit longer so I needed to make sure I had my nutrition. Pretty much everything I had, I split into 100 cal baggies. I had shot blocks, Stinger waffles (great if you haven't tried them), Pay Day candy bars in original wrapping, gels, etc. Makes it easy. I just had to take something every 30 minutes. Didn't matter what it was because everything I took was close to 100 cal. Take something every 30 minutes and grab some Powerade and I get my 250 cal per hour.

For Goofy though I just took what they had on the course. I think I did take 1 or 2 GU because I liked them better than Powerade gels. But they supply enough stuff out there that you really don't need to take anything if you don't want to.

As for shoes I remember my last Goofy I had bought a new pair month before and broke them in for the full. Well I ended up wearing them by mistake for the half. Ended up being OK but I was worried about the D tags since I used the full one for the half and the half for the full. Didn't make a difference.

For long runs, I have mixed emotions. I did back to back long runs for my 2 Goofy's and once it turned out fine the other time it didn't. The time I had an issue was my first Goofy. On my last 20 mi LR my IT started to hurt. Nothing until the last run. Mile 14 of the marathon my IT locked up and I had to walk for 7 or so miles.

I'm starting to think the weekday runs/general fitness are just as important or even more important than the long runs. For my last marathon a few weeks ago my longest run was 19 miles and the longest up to that was 15. Only did each of these one time. I did get some track work in once a week - speed only, and 2 other shorter runs, less than an hour each. Both of these after getting off my bike. My marathon was great. It was faster than my first Disney a few years ago when I was running up to 45 miles a week. So don't worry about getting all your long runs in if you are in good shape. I would have never said that a year ago.

Lastly, you are running Goofy. If you wanted a PR you wouldn't be running Goofy :) Don't worry about it. Just go out and have fun. I always try to save my energy for the marathon because, well, it's the last race. Don't want to use all my energy on the first race as I want to make sure I finish. My half times were 15 - 20 minutes slower than my half PR.

Wish I was there this year. Good luck everyone!
Duane

Well, I'll throw my hat in the ring too...

Who is doing the Goofy Challenge this January?I am, actually I'm in for the 5K too, so I'm Dopey. I did the full last January, but hurt my knee along the route and had to half run/half walk the rest of the course. I still finished just under 5:00 but had to take several months off after to properly heal up. Most normal people might say "That didn't go as I had hoped, so I'll try again" but for some reason I decided "That didn't go as I had hoped. Well forget that, what can I do that's bigger?" so I'm back for Goofy. Since then I did successfully complete a full marathon last month with no injuries and a much better time, so I'm looking forward to trying WDW again.

What are your training plans for the next 7 weeks?I'm in the middle of the Hal Higdon Intermediate 1 plan that generally has me running a medium length run on Saturday and a long run on Sunday so it seems like a good simulation of the Goofy pattern. The weather is starting to get colder, windier, and ranier so it takes a bit more motivation to get out in the evenings when I run but training for a goal keeps me going.

What if anything do you plan to carry with you on the course.I'll use the course water and will take items like bananas as they're offered, but I will also bring along some Shot Blocks and gels to use as needed. I'm also a very "heavy salt sweater" so I'll be bringing come electrolyte pills as well.

Are you running or walking the challenge?Running the marathon. My DW and DSis are doing the half marathon and I had said we would do the course together, but they are both much slower than I am so I'm reconsidering whether this is the best idea. Their running will be similar to my fast walking pace and although I really want to be supportive of their participation and make this a family bonding kind of experience, I'm concerned that basically walking the half and taking 3 - 3.5 hours to do so will not agree with my legs that will be used to running at twice the pace and I'll be more worn out for the full than I would be had I ran the half. Not sure what to do. DW and DSis will have each other to run with but I don't want to be selfish and leave them behind since it's their first big race. DW says it would be fine to go ahead, but sometimes what I'm told is OK and what actually is OK are two different things:rolleyes1

If you have done the Goofy before, what is your best advice for a first timer? Haven't done it before so no advice from me, although there's lots of good stuff in this thread and the main 2012 WDW Marathon thread.

To cover a few other things:

I'll be switching shoes for the half and full. I just go two new pairs of shoes a few weeks ago and have been running well in them.

I did a 17 mile run last weekend and still have an 18 miler and two 20 milers left in my program. Actually I should have done 18 today but needed to cut it short to 13 miles for scheduling reasons so I'll swap next week's 13 mile cutback run for this week and put the 18 miler in for next weekend.

A question for experienced Goofy and Dopey runners. By the morning of the marathon, with it being the second or third early morning, bus ride to Epcot, and long walk to the corrals, are you fed up with the pre-start experience? I am concerned that by Sunday I'll be sick of the whole bus ride, stand around, shuffle to the start experience. Of course I'll still do it all and will be happy with the accomplishment once it's done, but does anyone have a comment on what the mood is like for you the second/third morning?

I had to laugh at your comment about your DW saying it is ok not to run with her, but really deep down wanting you to stay with her. It must be a woman thing, but I try really hard to say what I mean and DH always tries to read into what I say because he assumes I mean something else. :rotfl: Anyway, I would explain to anyone wanting to run with you that it's going to be really hard for you to finish Goofy if you don't run the 1/2 in a similar manner as you train. I had to go through this with my parents who are running the 1/2 as well. My mom is a walker, and my dad is a runner in the 12 min/mile range. As much as I would love to stay with one of them during their first 1/2, I know it isn't the pace I've trained at and isn't smart for me. Eventually they understood.

I'm curious about the last question too. I'm lucky that the only day I don't have someone in my family running the same race is for the 5k. Hopefully having family there will keep me entertained, but I remember being bored with the start area/ corrals during the princess in February, and that was my first real disney experience like that.

The 5 k morning is a lot different so that is not quite the same.... You start near the finish line and never leave Epcot property. It is almost relaxing.

But - yes, I do get a fed up with the whole thing in a way. Yes, the same person sings the Anthem.... Yes, I am running the Goofy and no I am not going to yell and whoop on Sunday. Yes, I really hate that the crowd compacts so I am always next to the overly loud speaker set perfectly at ear level. Yes, I am a little sore and tired on Sunday morning.... sadly, I am just a little tired of the whole thing after 6 (12 total) starts.

But No, as in life, every day and every start is different. I see new things every day and with every start. From talking with the young lady who is literally shaking from fear of the marathon and remembering my first marathon; Looking at the weather channel at 2:30, 2:33, 2:36 ... and wondering what the weather is really like; to seeing an old friend and catching up on life; to standing next to an amputee who sacrificed more for this country in 22 years than I ever will AND seeing a tear roll down HIS face as we sing the anthem.... No, while I sit here today and think about it.... I actually cherish the fact that I am able and capable of getting to the line. I actually love getting out to the line and engaging in the trials and tribulations that every step of the roughly 75,000 steps over the weekend bring.

I probably did not really answer the question --- this really was a thought that I needed to get past with my training effort this year.

Well, I'm starting to come to terms with the possibility that I may not be Goofy after all :sad2:

I gave up on the 10/23 mile weekend idea, and was hoping for at least 10 miles. The achilles area is really bothering me, and I quit after feeling something sharp after a little over 2 miles. I have a call into the dr. to schedule an appointment.

I got an ace bandage yesterday, along with a lecture from the pharmacist. He asked if I was running because I wanted to be healthy, or if it was "an ego thing".

My Vegas 1/2 is in less than 2 weeks. There is a 4 hour time limit, so I could easily walk it if the dr. will allow.

We'll see...

Forget about the weather channel. If you have a smart phone you can get everything you want and more right at your fingertips. Being a meteorologist I already have most bookmarks saved on my phone and race morning, and for days before, will check the weather there. I'll try and chime in with my forecast for the half and full as we get closer. But I am a firm believer that more than 7 days out is a crap shoot and not until 48 hours before any certainty.

It's either that or the chick on the Disney To Do channel telling me about the 10 things I must do while there..... Hopefully, weather will not require anything other than a quick look and out the door.

Hang in there.... Good luck with the doctor

Thank you!

He has confirmed a soft tissue injury. Mega dose of naproxen, ice 3x/day, and no running for 10 days. He isn't opposed to me trying to walk the 1/2 next weekend if it feels ok.

He wasn't as enthusiastic about my Goofy plans, though. I don't think the half will be a problem, but lack of training may put me out of the full. Only time will tell...

Got out early this morning and did 5 miles. I felt great! Did 2 min. faster than last weekend.

My new favorite accessory is now my compression socks. I got them as a gift during the summer, but had not worn them until today. Wanted to see how they felt and if they were comfy, would wear them for the full. They felt awesome. Don't know if it was just in my mind or not, but I had no issues with my legs today. Usually when I'm in the walk phase and trying to keep a quick pace, I'll feel twinges as if shin splints are starting. Will also feel mild soreness in calves. Felt none of that this morning. I'm going to wear them a few more times just to see if they feel the same. If so, I'll be on :cloud9: wearing them and feeling good!

Just found this Goofy thread. Great to read everyone's tips, accomplishments, and struggles since this will be both my first marathon and first Goofy. I have ran a few halfs though including 3 at WDW in the past 15 months. I am following Galloway's training program for the Goofy as I've had some issues this past year with heel bursitis and tendonitis and I thought I needed to take it easier and add regular walk breaks. A word of WARNING: Don't take any fluroquinolone antibiotics such as Avalox which can predispose you to tendinitis and tears, especially of the Achilles tendon, while taking the medicine and up to several months afterwards.

I'm feeling hopeful that I can now finish the Goofy as I ran 10 miles on Thanksgiving at a 12:14 pace and then yesterday did 23 miles at a 12:45 pace. This is about 2 minutes slower than my half times. I live in rural Missouri so I have plenty of hills. I also run at least half on gravel roads. I am looking forward to the pretty flat terrain at WDW.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the help and inspiration on this thread and to wish everyone good luck!

Thanks for sharing the information about that antibiotic. I have a cronic left Achillies tendon problem, I finally got tired of fighting it and switched from running to race walking.

I'm going into this coming Goofy trained and uninjured for a change. Last January I did the Goofy after a long layoff from training with a PF injury and then caught the darn flu the week before the race. My new wife was pretty sure I had lost my mind, especially when I couldn't put weight on my right foot after we did the half together and had to massage my foot in a hot tub for an hour before I could even walk.

The Goofy is a different kind of beast, in January 2010 it was a race of survival with tempertures in the 20s, rain and wind.

Good luck to you, it sounds like you are doing some good solid training and should do just fine.

You forgot sleet! Or as the locals were claiming snow :scared1:

Well training for third goofy but am plagued with injuries. Took three days off, ran 8 Friday and hurt after that. Am still walking but am scrapping any run on Sunday. I was planning for 20 then decided I could not do 3 long runs so adjusted schedule, but I don't think I am even going to try tomorrow. Planning on taking dogs for a long walk maybe 9 miles but not sure that will help the calves. Will definitely be undertrained and just feeling bad about it. I want to train but if I do too much I definitely won't be running by the marathon. I know I can finish but I wanted to do better than finish and now I Judy have to be happy if I can run both and still walk after.

Thanks for listening

That's right. Ahh the good ole days. And to think we did that 2 days in a row! I never took my warm up gear off :)

good luck,
Duane

I remember that event Duane. I had 4 layers of clothes on, including the white tyvek suit to keep dry. I looked like the abominable snowman!:scared1:

Hang in there Kris. The third Goofy is well on the way. We just need to get you healthy enough to toe the line!

2010 was brutal. I remember ice in the cups of water until mile 18!

Don't forget the roadways around the water stations. I finally decided the icy stops were pre-dawn and along Bear ISland in the shad. Some stops threw out Powdered PowerAde on the roads for traction.
