Who's going to the tanning bed this year?

I used to tan in the couple of months before summer to get a base. I haven't tanned in about 3 years since before I got pregnant. I won't go now. I have a daughter that I want to set a good example for, plus I don't want cancer. I have finally accepted my white skin and will find a good self tanner when I feel I need color. Now that I am in my 30's I have realized my health needs to come first.

Hey guys do tanning beds cause cancer?

Talk about beating a dead horse.

I'll go if I need a quick tan but I have good Italian skin and I darken pretty easy in the sun :)

I started tanning a couple weeks ago, stand-up booth, though. The Hollywood Tans, I go to, is getting new High Pressure booths. They don't have ultra violet rays. They are a little expensive, but I'm going to try it when they get hooked up.

No. I also do everything I can to prevent getting tanned from the sun and booths.

I have used the sunless tanners in the past, as those do seem to be safe. At least, they don't increase your cancer risk. But I haven't used those for the past 2 summers and I won't this summer because I've been breastfeeding and/or pregnant for the past few years. The chemicals probably aren't dangerous, but it's not worth the chance. Those new spray-on tanning salons look great. Maybe in a few years I'll take a break from having babies and have all my children weaned and I'll be able to use one.

I don't get it...how can a tanning booth not have ultraviolet rays? How do they work then??

Well, I guess I'm vain then.

I go about once a month in the winter just so that I don't go completely white. I haven't been in awhile, mostly cause the one on campus is ghetto, lol, but I'll go when I get back to the island in a week.

I've got dark Italian skin too, never burn. Yes, we know it causes cancer, so does smoking, and obviously people ignore that one too. I really don't make a habit out of tanning, and the risks are well known. Once the risks are out there, it's up to the individual to make those choices for themselves.

I go.. heck my roommate works at the tanning salon I go to. I am only going for a little bit to get my base back, then it is back to outdoor tanning for me. Dark skin and hair runs in my family so I don't burn easily.

Doing it for like 3 months won't hurt you right? This is the first time I have done it, and I don't do it everyday.. I just love the results as of right now. I know that its going to effect the way I look later, but I don't plan on doing it forever. Makes me think of that older lady in Something About Mary.

Nope, I'd rather be pale now than look like a lizard by the time I'm 30. :duck:

Wow! Did I learn a lot on this thread!

I used to tan back when I was younger in NY but have no real reason to now. Besides I was born with one!

I used to like the even tone and shine that came with a tan. My son goes out to play in one day and comes back golden. I was always under the impression that tanning beds were safer than the sun, so I am amazed here. Like cigarettes, I guess as long as people want them they will continue to be.

I used to be a major sun tanner when I was younger. I would lay outside and bake for hours. By bake I mean it literally. I would put tons of baby oil on and lay there forever. I love to be tanned, I think you look better with some color on your skin. I will probably go to a tanning place before we leave for Florida in 1 month. As I get older I seem to burn easier then i did as a youngster. I also don't have the time to just lay outside for hours.

I've seen comments about how people look older due to being in the sun and getting tanned. I am going to be 46....I don't have 1 wrinkle in my skin, it is still soft and smooth and most people think I'm way younger then I am.

No tanning here. Multiple family members have had skin cancers already, and even though I'm only 17 my doctors watch me like a hawk. Even just going outside for an hour or so to go cross country skiing I have to wear sun screen. Some of my friends tan; they don't believe cancer can happen to them. But I've seen it in too many people I love, so I'm ultra careful.

Better to beat a dead horse than a dead person. Some of us don't read every reply before we post.

To the poster who lost her brother, my sympathies. A teacher I work with lost her sister the same way, also in a short period of time.

My understanding is that any tanning or darkening of the skin is destruction of skin cells. I can't say that I'm proud of being pasty white, but it's the lesser of the evils:D

A friend of mine had skin cancer at the ripe old age of 16, from cooking herself to a crisp every summer. It was back when baby oil was the oil used.

I also used to bake tan and real tan a LOT. Now I just use self tanner. At the ripe age of 37 I am more aware of my skin/lines. I also am a "mole" person and afraid of cancer anymore...so no more tanning beds.

Oh...I did love to be tan though.

and I still get a tan once a year when we go to Hawaii...with the help of 30 sunblock.

I miss the relaxing hum of a tanning bed.:) I used to go all the time, then I had kids and didn't take the time to go. I finally talked myself into going back about a year and a half ago and stopped after a couple of months. I miss going.
