Whole Milk

I just had a quick question for everyone. We are going to the Magic Kingdom in two short weeks and it will be my DH, DD, and myself. My daughter will be almost 13 months so she gets most of her nutrients from whole milk right now. Do most restaurants or counter service places have whole milk available or just skim and chocolate milk? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Many pediatrician now reccomend 2% milk so if they don't have the whole it will be fine for her to have it. I am assuming she gets cheese and yogurt and other diary foods so she will be just fine. I have seen these questions before and they have gotten 50/50 answers some places have it and some don't. So don't even worry about it

They have whole milk. I think 2% might be the default, but just ask. We routinely asked for skim for our kids and received it without issue.

I will add though, at 13 months, most of your child's nutrients are (or should be) coming from the food she eats. Not that the milk isn't part of that, but she certainly isn't getting the majority of her nutrition from milk, or shouldn't be anyway.

ETA: The reason for the whole milk is not that it has more nutrients but that it has more fat.

You're right, I'm sorry, it is for the fat. I knew that. My mistake. :) She does get plenty of food but our pedi kept pushing the importance of her getting 24 oz. of whole milk a day. He never mentioned 2% milk so that's why I was trying to find out. Thanks!

If your pedi suggested whole, then stick to it - but I'm sure it won't be a huge issue for your child to get 2% for a week or two (however long your trip is). Unless your child has special health concerns, I'm sure your pedi would agree that even if whole is preferred, 2% will not harm her for a week. And if you're still worried - there's yogurt with fat at WDW that you can give her to 'supplement' the 2% milk and lots of cheese too - so I'm sure she can have her fill of dairy fat while there.

That info helps a lot. This will be our first time to the world with a milk drinking baby (last time she was 2 months old and breastfeeding) so I didn't know about the yogurt and cheese options. :) I wasn't worried at all because, like you said, she'll be okay with 2% instead of whole for a short period of time but I figured people on here might have a better idea than I did of what was available just so I could plan a little bit! Thanks everyone.

There really isn't a huge difference between whole and 2% whole milk is about 3% fat, so yo are losing 1/3 of the fat content by going to 2%, but that is about it. All the other nutrients are still in place.

Dd5 had her 1st birthday at WDW - we had no problem at all getting whole milk for her in the parks.

I suggest, not worrying. Get 2% milk and supplement with ice cream:thumbsup2. Win/Win situation.

Really, don't fret it too much. It is one week and you are there to enjoy yourself. Your child might even surprise you and eat different foods that have fat content. The reason for the vacation is to at least relax a bit. Go and enjoy.
