Hello all,

We are recent owners to SSR. We just came back from a 15 day stay :lovestruc

We originally rented points for OKW prior to purchasing resale at SSR. Once we purchased we added on nights to the beginning of the trip at SSR. Our stay at SSR was great. Loved it there. We had stayed two previous times at OKW, a few years back and really liked it, and had done AKV two years in a row, so decided to change it up.

OKW was a disaster. Really, not exaggerating. Room was filthy, smelled like mold. Bathroom, uuggghh. I took pictures it was THAT bad. Black stuff all around the toilet top, urine on the caps on the bottom, black gunk in the corner at the sink, bottom of bathroom door all chipped up entire width and just repainted over. Window over toilet was cracked with stuff in the corners and dust and old black hair on the sill. Made the mistake of taking a bath the next day, you could literally FEEL the scum around the whole tub. The tub looked clean, it obviously was not. That tub needed to be SCRUBBED. From the tub you could see streak marks, runny streak marks on the photo over the toilet, GOD only knows the last time that was wiped down. The fridge was rusted on the outside, with old crud caked on the rim of the front. I found a yellow capsule (someones medication) laying next to the fridge, only found it when I folded a paper bag and was going to put it on the side of the fridge. It was OLD, you could tell, it looked like it was going to burst, you could see all the tiny contents of the capsule coming to the surface. The carpet was torn the whole width of the room. Looks like where the seam was, but it was completely frayed from one side clear to the other side of the room. We rented two studios, my older son, his wife and two Grandchildren came as well. Their room was directly on top of ours. Their fridge had no freezer section, totally different shower head, that basically just dripped water out, no pressure at all. The patio door did not stay closed unless you physically locked it and neither door shut on its own. I always had the habit of pulling the door shut anyway to make sure it shut, but these doors did not even shut unless you completely pushed them closed. I was in building 17, room 1714. I called the front desk as soon as we arrived, was told couldn't switch to any other rooms, and to check back in a few days to see if one became available.

The front buildings were closed the day we arrived for reno so none of those rooms were open. The issues were never cleaned. On day 4 they left a basket with supplies, which should have been trash/linen day. Never came even though I called to have them do the room. No shampoo, soap etc in the basket, but they did leave about 50 trash bags. Why, I have NO idea and 1 thing of All laundry detergent, even though I was in a studio. I called again and asked for shampoo etc and was told if I wanted it I would have to pay. I advised on the 4th day at Saratoga all my supplies were replenished, at that point I received an attitude and 10 mins later a knock on my door and was given ONE shampoo and ONE conditioner, and they turned and walked away. Really, are you serious??!! No plates or supplies in the room at all, but they were at Saratoga. I know this is an older resort but Motel 6 I was NOT expecting. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I do expect a DVC Deluxe to be at least to the standards if no more than the regular Deluxe resorts. I called DVC member services by day 3, couldn't take it anymore, room still filthy. I cleaned the urine but NOT the black gunk around the toilet. Unfortunately, because I rented the points and they weren't my points, they told me really nothing they could do to get me out and to another resort. I would have to contact the person I rented from, have them call to make changes and depending on if they had enough points or not, see what, if any changes could be done. I rent from a person out of the country so I couldn't get in touch with them in time. I asked if I could just switch over with the points and use my own to make up the difference but was told that's not possible. And then was advised two of the days were not even available anywhere, most likely due to Food and Wine starting at the end of the week.

I'm just wondering who it is I can forward this info and pictures over to. Someone needs to know about this room and lack of service.

I'd post pictures, but I don't know how to add them.

Thanks

Sorry for your bad experience, if you read my posts, I have reported similar issues.

Let me break it down for you. OKW is an older resort, things are worn out, it is built on wetland that adds to the mold and mildew issues.

Poor service happens at all of the resorts, issues with housekeeping happens at all of the resorts.

The more you vacation the more you will see and the greater the possibility that you can have a negative experience. DVC seems to have more negative issues than the cash resorts.

Your only recourse at the time was to go to the front desk and invite a manager to visit your room. You can report the problems to WDW guest relations and the DVC member satisfaction team. They will act like this is a unique occurrence but it happens too often. Poor quality/maintenance is a management/budget issue.

Sorry to hear of all the issues.

Calling the front desk actually gets a call center who will essentially provide lip service. If there are issues at a DVC or even Disney hotel you need to actually go to the front desk. Calling maintenance does get you maintenance and if you have things that would fall under their supervision then call them. We've done that at various times and had good service although we haven't had to at OKW so I don't know how it is there.

The reaction from housekeeping may be a bit of an indicator why the condition of that room was so bad. FYI - know that housekeeping services are supposed to be the same at all resorts. If you see a basket outside your room that's been left as an indicator that the room is scheduled for service that day and is not being left for you to bring in, not that you did, but if you did then housekeeping could have thought the room was done or not even known it was scheduled.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your reply. I totally understand that poor service and housekeeping happen at all the resorts. I've been coming yearly since 1993 and have seen my fair share. I was just really surprised based on past experience there how bad it was this time around.

OMG, now I'm nervous-we're leaving for OKW in a few days and especially concerned because, for the first time, we're taking our grandchildren. That reminds me of the suggestion I've heard so many times-don't call "the front desk", go there. Well, first, doesn't it seem to some people that when you pick up the phone in your villa and call the number they tell you is the front desk, it is their responsibility to either connect you with the front desk or at least give you someone who well represents them. Second, why are you expected to actually go to the front desk-what if you're the only adult there and the kids are napping? It's seems it shouldn't be necessary to inconvenience yourself for these resort's problems.

If you want to speak to someone in power to address your issue, you need to talk to them. The best way to do that at Disney is to do it face to face. The call centers job is to keep guests from taking up the front desks time. They will connect you to housekeeping or maintenance/engineering. The problem is that you are reporting an issue to the people who may have allowed the issue to occur.

I want management involved, it may not change things in the long run, but I feel that I did my part to try and make Disney a better place.

With issues that bad NEVER call about it. You march right down to the front desk and demand to speak to the manager! I would never have spent one minute more in the room.

I didn't read the initial post, it's a little too long for me. I stayed at the resort this weekend. Everything was perfect no problems I wouldn't let one post like this send me into a panic for an upcoming visit.

The issue with the refrigerator with no freezer section. It seems that version is what they are replacing the older units with. So you might get a studio with a refrigerator with a freezer or you might not. And I bet the freezer-less version is what they will all be in the future.

For the shampoo and conditioner: That's all you are entitled to every service day for a studio. One bottle of shampoo and one bottle of conditioner per service day. Plus a bottle of shower gel and a bar of soap. A one bedroom usually get two shampoos and conditioners and shower gels because of the two bathing areas.

I've also found that I need to pull the patio door shut to make sure it closes and then turn the latch to make sure it is secure.

As for the bathroom, when they did the "complete" renovation to OKW about three years ago, they didn't do anything at all in the bathrooms. They really needed some power steaming to get the grout clean at that time.

We've stayed at OKW about 15 or more times and haven't had any real problems. We were there in May and will be heading there next spring.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare anyone away from the resort, I was just stating facts and looking for where I could pass the info onto. Below is both sides of the toilet and what it looked like. How ANYONE would think this was acceptable/clean is beyond me. Won't bore you with more pics, just wanted to show I don't think I was complaining about something trivial.

Wow!! That is pretty disgusting!!!:scared1:

I feel really badly for you, OP. We've been staying at OKW since 1993 also and have encountered some of the issues you dealt with - particularly missing frig grills, plus a lot of dishwashers that don't function properly. But your situation sounds extreme

We checked in again yesterday (after 3 nights at the VGF which is still pretty pristine). Both my DH and I said this unit - 3811 - is the cleanest we've seen one in awhile. But they are absolutely showing their age, even after the refurb.

That's awful to have encountered so many issues. :(

But really...why didn't you discuss it with a manager? It's their job to address these sorts of problems for guests.

My philosophy is that if the problems are significant enough to complain about afterward, there is absolutely no reason to wait. Get it resolved immediately! Would have taken 10 minutes to walk to the front desk, give problem list / photos to a manager and agree on a time by which they would all be addressed. Problem solved.

I do love OKW for the decor and the ambiance but man every time we go I feel like I should have brought a bottle of bleach with me.

With that said when we stay at other resorts you can smell the bleach/cleaning products when you walk in the bathroom

OKW needs a major housekeeping overhall- starting with the supervisors evidently. I have said this for a while now

Agree completely that going down to speak to a Manager when you are there will probably net you the best results. We had to do this once and I asked to speak to a Manager, got one, and had results within minutes. We were offered another villa and had maintenance there within minutes. We noticed that while OKW does have larger villas, it is having major cosmetic issues that really should be addressed. The bathrooms were clean for us, but they sure could use a good upgrade. Get rid of the tiles and replace with a smoother, easier to clean surface. The tiles in the master bathroom looked pretty dingy and old as well as the caulking in the shower. Blech.

We just checked in here Saturday, and although fortunately we didn't have as many issues as the OP, we did have the "phantom pill" also-some pill that a previous guest left behind on the floor. Otherwise, one of the remotes doesn't work, nor can we close the kitchen sink drain, but otherwise things are OK. I'll admit it's not as sparkling clean as usual (lots of smudges here and there, DH had to sweep the floor), just OK.

I wish I had known about the front desk situation when we stayed there in November. Our AC didn't work properly after about 4 days of it working fine. I kept calling and calling and calling and being told it would be addressed, had been addressed, etc. The AC unit kept running but didn't cool the room down. I had no idea I wasn't speaking with someone actually at OKW. We were in a unit by the Turtle pool and to go all the way to the front desk and fight for parking up there would have been a source of irritation. In the end we finally got someone to listen and he credited $150 to our room, but by then I was beside myself and so upset. I'm not sure I can bring myself to go back there again. However, we had no issues with the cleanliness of the unit.

wow that toilet was disgusting! Stayed at okw in a 1 bedroom in 2013 a first time stay there , it was very clean no issues, we are booked in a 2 bedroom in November and am really uneasy about it after seeing this, any issues like that when we are there I will be heading down to front desk for sure! Keeping my fingers crossed we have the same experience as our last trip there!:thumbsup2

We stayed at OKW two years ago, with some of the same housekeeping issues that you have described. We have not returned.
