Who is your favourite singer or band?

Favourite band - Zero 7.
Favourite singer - Venus Hum.
Favourite piece of music - Vide Cor Meum.
Favourite artist - either Thomas Newman or Hans Zimmer.

Kelli O'Hara, Sutton Foster, Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald...

Thank you for mentioning Sutton Foster. I was thinking about her a few days ago, but I couldn't come up with her name. Of course, now that I have her name, I can't remember why I wanted it, lol.

I like "both kinds...country and western." :lmao:In case you don't know, this is a line in the movie The Blues Brothers. :thumbsup2 But seriously, as long as it's not country or pop music....I'm in!

I don't know any of these, but I know Kristin Chenoweth and Indina Menzel are actresses. Not familiar with their music at all. I guess that is a lot of bands to not know.
All the people I mentioned are primarily musical theatre singers/actresses. Idina Menzel was also the voice of Elsa in Frozen.

I totally agree with what you are saying, and was what I was trying to say. Its great to see others opinions on all these incredibly subjective arguments! I'm completely entitled to think, as an example, that Real Estate's cover of The Cranberries' very excellent "Linger" is even better than the original, you can argue against. I think its super neat that WDW brings all types of people to the party, that's all.

I'll happily argue music with people all day though! And, while I adore Kanye, he is a genius, I don't think he's the reason that the last 10-15 years have been so exceptional. I think it comes from building on a rock/rap base that were in their infancy and taking them to a more mature place. I'm not denying that the Beatles, Dr. Dre, Nirvana, etc. aren't amazing seminal artists, but music now can learn and build from that.

I don't think Kanye or Beyonce are "exceptional", which is why I cited Kanye and/or the Beyhive's claims about GOAT making my eyes roll. Both have some listenable product, but talk of GOAT for either one doesn't hold up. The best is in the ears of the listener, which changes greatly by person. I'd rather share music with someone by saying, have you heard X or Y, I think you might enjoy. I've learned about a lot of great music that way myself -- and had a great time with friends too.

As far as music the last 10 to 15 years being better because it's building on the past, IMO that's largely led to a lot of laziness and derivative ideas. The fact that Mozart, Beethoven, etc. created their art in a time when people didn't hear music very much unless they were fortunate enough to go to a performance or have some type of instrument in their home to make the music themselves, mostly by playing tunes they had memorized. The fact that art has held up for centuries speaks volumes.

I got the reference right away :).

I don't anticipate much of Beyoncé's music withstanding the test of time, and none of Kanye's. Of course their die hard fans will still be fans. But, the idea of turning on the radio 40 years from now and hearing these two with the same frequency one could hear The Beatles today - nah, I don't see it.

It must be hard to argue about music if you haven't heard much of it. There are probably only 2 listed on this thread that I haven't heard of.

Uhhh...who's arguing about it? From my perspective, I listed the people/bands that I like or liked, then made a joke that I don't know a lot of the ones other people listed. I didn't, and don't, make any argument about them one way or the other, I don't even know who they are.

I agree. We live in the Detroit area so the influence of Motown looms large. It seems whenever we go to a large gathering or event where Motown oldies are played, butts get out of seats and dance, lots of happy smiles all around. I don't think it's simply a phenomenon here because it's regarded as a hometown product, I think that Motown music likely has a similar reception in many areas of the country, despite much of it being 40+ years old. Not sure very much of the top hits of popular music today will get that kind of reaction in ten, 20, 30, 40 years and beyond. Will my daughters' children know Rihanna, Beyonce, Maroon Five, 21 Pilots, Taylor Swift, the way mine know Motown oldies, which was actually prior to "my era", or even something like Madonna, which I suppose should be considered more the music of my era?

In every generation, there are songs that withstand the test of time, and it's not always the biggest hits. Motown definitely stands up and probably always will.

But, take someone as huge as Michael Jackson. It's not been that many years, but only a tiny fraction of his work is still relevant today, some of that from the Jackson 5 days. On the flip side, it's all but impossible to avoid hearing Queen, and they were obviously never as big as MJ.

That's interesting. Queen still does loom large here, although honestly so does MJ. I actually know a wide swath of my daughters' friends (college age now) who are very into MJ's music. I wonder if that's an anomaly of our area, or potentially the effect of the music having a resurgence after his death when a certain segment of kids were at an influential age?

One thing that did surprise me was how little my daughters were familiar with Prince's music. We did occasionally play it in the house or car when they were growing up, but apparently it had little to no impression on them. Madonna is an artist of the same age and era, yet they're quite familiar with her music despite the fact it wasn't something we really played in the house or the car while they were growing up. I've wondered if that isn't at all linked to the tight control he held over his music? Beyond that I'm not very sure what to guess could be the difference there.

Couldn't even begin to make a start at limiting it to one. Music can be like a friend and different music appeals for different parts of life for me. I can't even pick a favorite genre.

This is me too. I like so many different kinds of music, so many different singers and bands, from the 1940's up to now.

Referencing the post above mine (that you quoted) in which the poster stated she would "happily argue about music all day" but went on to admit she hadn't heard of most of the ones listed in this thread. How can you possibly argue about the merits of music when admittedly all you expose yourself to are Kanye, Beyoncé, and hipster bands?

Actually, I never once mentioned Beyonce and only mentioned Kanye when another poster brought him up. I said I liked indie music. I certainly know the classics, but very little about modern country or musicals. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough if in my posts, but I'm going to step away.

Which bands are considered hipster bands?

I like all kinds of music with Pop being my least favorite of the mainstream genres. It's hard to pinpoint just a few artists.

No, I was the one who referenced Kanye and Beyonce in discussion with you, in regards to greatest music ever/GOAT.

I disagree with your take on the issue, but it's not personal. I was simply discussing the ideas and thought you were doing the same? Don't see the need to step away.

Me too - in regards to us just disagreeing:) Friendly discussion is always encouraged, and honestly, I understand your position on originality, its totally valid, I'm talking more about the enjoyment of the end product. I enjoy this type of thing very much. Not one single one of us on this thread or who has ever had an opinion on music is right, and talking about it is always fun.

I just felt like the poster I quoted misunderstood me, or more, likely, I did a bad job communicating my thoughts, since its a silly online forum, and not the hardcore Pitchfork comments world (Lord knows I don't want to argue in that world), and honestly, they weren't as well put together as they could have been. I've found in online discussions, once something gets misconstrued, its best to walk away, as its hard to get a baseline of understanding and that's totally ok. Misunderstandings happen and its nbd:)
