I've said for a while that we are doing buying points but I think after staying in the Ko Olina area we would add on. I think we'd buy enough points to be able to go every 3 years.

This is what we will probably do too. We would need just enough points to go every three years. The plane ride is LONG and expensive, but the island is so beautiful! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Not going to buy in HI, but definitely jumping up and down about the chance to stay there on DVC points! I'll start planning the trip as soon as they announce point costs!

Truthfully this isn't something I am all excited about at all. I just don't really care to go to Hawaii and after my DH lived there he has no desire to go back. Now if you gave us the Caribbean we'd be more excited for sure!

If the point structure (and prices) are in line with the other DVC resorts, I'd definitely do an add on. Just a small one though, as I could be happy for 1 week every other year (or so) in a two bedroom. Ko Olina made me consider buying a Marriott timeshare there, but I'm so glad I saved my money for DVC!

For West Coasters (like me), it is an easy trip... it is the trips to Florida that are a complete day of travel and very exhausting -- thank goodness we can get a 'welcome home' at the end of the day.

Ok...so I just need to know. Is anyone else as psyched about the Hawaii announcement today as me? Please post your results on the poll and let me know where you excitement level is. I cant stop thinking about it.

What's the difference between choice one and two? Both indicate a desire to buy right away. Am I missing something?

The difference between choice one and two is the first choice means you plan on buying and showing up the day the resort opens, the second choice means you are interested in buying but could wait for re-sale or the dust to settle before planning a trip. Simply a distinction in level of excitement.

We are staying at the Ko Olina next June and were in the process of looking to buy a Marriott at either Ko Olina or Aruba...this made our decision so much easier.

My guide has us on the list to call when points are available

So who is going to make up a banner.....??? "Will purchase points when available" lol

I am not sure if we would add on but sure stay there easy trip for us too!

I voted that I would go, but not purchase becaue I suspect the points and MF are going to be quite a bit higher than current properties. However, if I'm wrong, and the points and MF are in line with current resorts, I could see doing an add-on that would allow me to visit every other year.

That was kinda what I was just thinking. . .the point requirements are going to have to be high I would think to create equity in the system. . .but I would love it if I were wrong!!

I found this news article but there is no mention of it being a DVC Resort - just a hotel. Do the folks here talking about buying points lnow something?
Disney plans Hawaii resort, no giant teacups
Twenty-one acres of oceanfront property will become a 'culturally aware' stand-alone family vacation spot.
October 4 2007: 11:05 AM EDT

HONOLULU (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co. plans to build a family resort in Hawaii, but it won't be an island Disneyland.

Walt Disney Parks & Resorts announced Wednesday it has bought 21 acres of oceanfront property on the western side of Oahu that it will use to build an 800-room hotel complex.

The resort, Disney's first without a nearby theme park, will emphasize family-centered vacations while respecting Hawaii's culture, said Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo.

"It will give our guests another way to visit a place that they've loved for many years," Rasulo said. "As the crossroads of Asia, it is your diverse culture that makes this place so special."

Disney spent $144 million to buy the land at the Ko Olina development, near the existing J.W. Marriott (Charts, Fortune 500) Ihilani Resort and Spa.

Disney has several themed resort hotels near Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida, but it has never built a hotel resort that will stand on its own. Hawaii has no full-scale amusement park.

Construction on the resort is expected to begin next year, with opening set for 2011. The planned Disney complex has not yet been named.

"This decision and project really enhances our state's reputation as a family destination," said Gov. Linda Lingle. "That's what we are, and the Disney (Charts, Fortune 500) name brings that to everyone's mind, front and center."

The hotel complex is expected to create 1,000 jobs along the island's Leeward coast, an area known as much for its homelessness as for its breezy beaches.

The resort's designs and amenities won't be finalized until early 2008, but Rasulo said it will include educational and cultural activities, including local entertainers and hula dancers.

"When our families go home, they will know much more about Hawaii," Rasulo said. "To call it a hotel would be a vast understatement of what we're trying to achieve."

Where's the choice for 'no interest whatsoever'.

I'm happy for all the folks who want this. Enjoy. But if I were to fly all the way out to Hawaii, this isn't the location for me.
Sal, you took the words right out of my mouth!

We went to Hawaii on our honeymoon and loved it. We were at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Oahu for 3 days and we also stayed in Kauai (3 days) and Maui (4 days).

That was 11 years ago, and we haven't been back. We liked the North Shore of Oahu, but other than that, have no desire to go back to Oahu. We loved Kauai and Maui, and would definitely go back to both of those, and we'd love to spend some time on the Big Island.

But I have no desire to own a DVC interest in Hawaii.

Too far to be a consistent destination for our vacations. If we want a regular island vacation we go to Aruba. If we want a beach we have lots of options just a hour or two by car :) And we can go to VB in 90 minutes.

We may do it once just to have had the opportunity, maybe five nights at DVC then a week at the MVCI resort located there as well.

Well said. Should have read your post before posting my own! Our favorite island is Maui.

We just went to Hawaii for the first time this past April and I absolutely loved it! We spent 4 nights on Oahu and 6 nights on Maui at the Grand Wailea for a huge amount of points! I would love to go back and would definitely stay at the new Disney resort if I could, but probably not for more than 4, maybe 5 nights again. I still need to get over to Kaui and the Big Island. I honestly don't see us going to Hawaii often enough to make a purchase worthwhile, but I am hoping to go once they build the new resort.

If your opinion is the majority, all the better chance for some of us to book at the 7 month window! Maybe I won't need to buy an add on.... :woohoo:

Though I am from the Midwest. I would buy there and plan on an every 3 years kind of thing. Bank, borrow and current year. The cost of flights would not allow for the frequent trips we do to WDW. But every few years is OK with me. :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes

Being from the upper midewest (better known as the frozen north), we have had several trips to Hawaii. We almost purchased an every other year timeshare on the Big Island of Hawaii last time we were there, but decided we would wait for Disney to do one. Now that Disney is doing one, we probably will not buy (unless the points are low enough to make a smaller add-on worthwhile). We know we wouldn't be making that flight more often than every 3rd year, but I think a Hawaii timeshare rental might have merit. It seems to be a popular destination. I too think the maintenance and point structure is going to be such that it will be next to impossible for us to utilize it with just 429 points at the 7 month window. We were starting to plan another Hawaii trip for 2009, but with this announcement, we will likely wait until it opens, and try to do a stay there.

The Big Island is our favorite, followed closely by Kauai, and then Maui. We do always plan a few days on Oahu each trip, but we prefer the more laid back atmosphere on the Big Island. That is much like our preference for OKW and AKV at WDW. SO, I voted we will stay, but doubt we will buy.
