Who here is not in the "clique" like me? Part 4

Amber- I'm with you on the tipping. It seems like everyone wants/expects a tip nowadays. If I'm going to tip anyone, I would like to tip the cooks because they actually made my meal. There are a few restaurants outside of WDW that I'd like to try anyways.

Lyzziesmom- That's great about Lyzzie being able to go to camp!:cool1: I'm sorry about your grandparents moving. It must be hard seeing them move and just leaving all the memories behind. Whenever my grandma passes away, my aunt is going to inherit the house and will probably sell it. It will just be weird seeing another family living in the house my grandfather built. Great, now I'm getting emotional!

DznyFan: Superb example on the tipping. The only "experience" I have with it is Emma's dad, and since he was such a con artist I could be way off base, but here's my story: He worked at Rainforest Cafe here in Kansas City. As we all know, they are not exactly cheap, but not quite high-end either. However, he normally worked larger tables and birthday parties (built-in tips). Often he would bring home $20 and tell me that's all he made that day. Other days would be closer to $100, but those days were few and far between. His checks, after taxes, would be about $10-$20 for two weeks. So I was thinking we were pretty much in the poorhouse. Fast forward to January 2005, several months after our separation back in August '04 and a few months before the annulment was final in April '05. His W2 comes in the mail, and states that with his salary and REPORTED tips (of course we all know that many tips go unreported) he brought in nearly $35,000 that year!! So then why were living in my parents' basement and driving only one car, with zero savings built up??

Whoops sorry, I got a little off-track there. I've forgotten what my point was, but it was something along the lines of nobody really realizes the potential amount of money that a good server CAN make. Someone who works at IHOP probably works a heck of a lot harder than someone who works at a 5-star restaurant waiting tables, but will bring home a lot less money for the same job. It really should be more standardized and less based on tips.

Linda- Sell the duplex and buy into DVC!!!

:rotfl: I want to...then again I don't want to...sell the duplex that is... either way I want DVC...I just didn't want another payment. I wanted to pay cash. Ok Mike demands paying for everything cash, except cars and houses...

basically, the duplex pays for itself and now I will be able to raise it to both sides being the same rate giving me a few hundred a month over the payment plus on taxes it gives me about 4-5k a year on top of all that... financially it is probably the best thing to keep the duplex and buy smaller contracts cash... 100 wouldn't be bad to start would it???

I was trying to tell Mike we should move to wdw and I would be a server for what they make there!!! I mean come on... our bill at Le Cellier is $120 for 3 people... they automatically get a 18% tip...that is almost $22 tip just for our table and they're serving 6 tables or so at a time...that is quite a bit per hour. I know it isn't nonstop..but at wdw..it is pretty good as we all know!!!

Lyzziesmom, I read a few servers here say that they didn't like the DDP because tips were added to their paycheck. They were upset because they were being taxed on their tips (well duh).

I worked as a hostess at Denny's and Cracker Barrel in high school. Now, those aren't high end places, but the severs were making a LOT of money. I watched several walk out of the end of their shift with several hundred dollars. One girl at CB only worked Sat. and Sun. mornings (busiest time) and each day made at LEAST $300! That's in cash and doesn't include tips on a credit card.

Some places they make severs split tips (a %) with the bartender, busboy, etc. So, they may take home a little less, but still can make a lot. I realize that servers are taxed a percentage of the bills (I believe it's 8-13%) but that's a far cry from the 15-20% that's expected to be left.

Linda: you've got it all figured out don't you!?! The one thing about a server's job that many people don't take into consideration when trying to figure how much they make per hour, is that typically shifts will be only 4-6 hours long and usually about 4 or 5 days a week. So that will drastically reduce the weekly pay, so even if it's $22 an hour, if there are only 24 hours it's really not that much. However many servers will pick up extra shifts or work doubles.

Heck, even if they only waited one table an hour $22 is nice.

Not knowing your finances at all, I'll give you my opinion. ;) Keep the duplex and get DVC. Then, you can use the rent money to pay for DVC and dues. With your mom moving out and you being able to raise the rent, that's almost like free money. :thumbsup2 (thumb)

Amber: I used to have a group of friends who were all servers at various restaurants and some of them made VERY good money. It all depends on where you work and how much people like you I guess. I'm sure it would be great at WDW!!

ETA - I agree with Amber's advice for Linda. If you can make a few hundred a month on the duplex, plus get tax credit for it, keep it!

:rotfl2: I wish...I'm sure trying though. as you can tell, I think about it quite a bit:rotfl: we were just a table of 3... there are tons that are much bigger... and if they do 6 tables an hour... that adds up QUICK...even if its 3 or 4 hours a day... I'll call it a day and go to the parks, no problem:woohoo: :cloud9: but.... he doesn't like FL...so I'm SOL anyway:guilty:

One server on the DIS said that some servers are making 70K a year! Granted, that is probably at the higher end places, but still...

70k a year?? Where do I sign up?!?

Linda: They certainly wouldn't turn out 6 tables an hour at the rate they went at our Cliqueless Convention! Geez, remember sitting there for what seemed like forever while that woman tried to figure out the bill? "Don't worry, I'll take your orders now and split it up later." Yeah right! What was she thinking? It was really neat to see the place empty though, I got some pretty cool pictures.

I'm not normal when it comes to stuff like that:rolleyes1  that one track mind goes for finances too... pay it off, pay it off, pay it off... I was wanting to have EVERYTHING paid 100% in the next 10 years including the houses. But considering what we pay going to wdw anyway...I think it would be smarter to buy into dvc in the long run. one of the perks being discounts at the restaurants and tours and ap's ;)

I think you're right... I'll have to see what Mike thinks. Another reason was b/c the crap w/the ex. Him telling Kenny that I took HIS house:confused3 we had 2 houses...one of us got a house...DUH!!! His had a lot more equity than the duplex anyway..but you know how people can be... but just like everything else...I can just tell him (when he's old enough) that is dad is full of BS:lmao:

70k a year for their hours sound GREAT to me!!!

that's true...but there were how many of us??? I'd still take it!!! just being at the place you LOVE... would be great. Seeing all the little kids so excited to be there:cloud9: very cool!!! I was talking to Mike about moving to TN and he said we'd talk about it when I got my nursing degree:laughing: brat!

He's a bright boy, you won't have to tell him anything. He'll figure it out on his own.

Lyzzie is just starting to figure out that her dad is not as great as she thought. It's kind of sad, but I'm also very proud of her for knowing what's important.

true... I figured it out about my dad too ;)

last night it was funny. we were sitting on the front porch and Kenny was wanting to give Mike his Fathers day present. Mike says..but I'm not your father...Kenny speaks up... yeah, but YOU'RE the one that cares and makes sure I'm taken care of!!!!:cloud9: it was so sweet. It is awesome b/c it just makes Mikes day...Kenny sees how it really is.

Linda: See, Kenny's got it figured out! What a sweetie, I bet that made Mike's day.

That's like Emma, sometimes she will say "I don't have a daddy but I have a Poppy!" (that's what they call my dad) She is a little confused though, one day our conversation went like this:

Emma: I have a daddy.
Me: Oh really? Who is that?
E: Poppy is my daddy.
M: No, Poppy is your grandpa, he's my daddy.
E: NO HE'S NOT, he is MY daddy!
M: No, he is your grandpa.
E: Who is your grandpa?
M: Grandpa S. is my grandpa.
E: NO HE'S NOT, he is MY grandpa! *(note, he is really her great-grandpa)*
M: No, he is my grandpa and Grammy's daddy.
E: Who is your daddy?
M: Poppy is my daddy.
E: NO HE'S NOT, he is MY daddy, and he is my grandpa too! You can't have him!

It's like Who's on First around here sometimes! Or like the song, "I Am My Own Grandpa."
