I've not been to either but have been researching them for our upcoming cruise. Check out cosumelinsider.com for more info plus they have a coupon for a couple bucks off entrance to Chankanaab park.

We went to Xcaret last week-9/20. We took our five and seven year old daughters. They enjoyed it a lot! The underground river is neat, but my husband had to drag our five year old through it. It's dark and a long way. Our seven year old swam the whole way by herself. It's really long even for adults, but the cool water is refreshing!

It's a neat park. It's part zoo, aquarium, beach. The lunch was ok. Choice of hot dog, hamburger, etc with chips and a drink. The free ice cream was not really a choice--you had to take the one they offered.

We snorkeled--bring your own mask, vest, and snorkel if you can. You probably won't be able to see even half of the park in the time you're there. You'll need to prioritize. We did the river first, then ate and snorkeled. We went through the aquarium (air conditioning), and wandered through other animal exhibits. That's really all we had time for.

We took a tender boat from the boat right to Playa del Carmen. I heard that now they are docking, so that's probably changed too.

It's beautiful!!!!!! My mom took my kids through the underground river and they liked it, but said it was too long. (DS 14 and DD 12) The rest of us went to the beach. The guide told us it took 45 minutes to go through the river, but they took an hour and a half. We missed a lot and would love to go back one day.

A word about their sunscreen. I didn't like it. I am allergic to most sunblocks and brought my Nutrigena. They wouldn't let me bring it in. They gave us a small packet of their sunblock and said one was good for two people. The packet is about 2" x 2". Not very big. It also doesn't stay on very well. We sweated most of it off within the first hour. Next time, I'll apply my own before leaving the ship and use theirs if I need to reapply.

Also, you must walk 8 blocks from the ferry to the bus. Wear comfy shoes and bring a fan.

Solo mom (me) went in July with dd's ages 7 & 12. I didn't do a trip report - BUT did answer lots of questions and post pix on the disboards. What can I tell you? I can honestly say we thought it was great! The only thing was the lack of enough time - it was like just a "taste" of the park - my kids want to come back and spend a full day or two. Its almost like AK - in 5 hours - you just can't do everything. :butterfly
