I was thinking about Snoopy's shoe thread and thinking about I can't even buy just any shoe I like anymore because of bunions.

I've heard the surgery is reaaaaaaaallllllly painful. Is it true? And I've heard that sometimes it doesn't even work? Any success stories out there?

Bunionectomies for Paul Bunion - the right one, and Pauline Bunion - the left one in 1988 and 1989. I had them done over Christmas break my freshman and sophomore years of college.

I would have to say my surgeries were a success. I still could never wear the pointy shoes in snoopy's thread, but I don't have to wear wide widths anymore.

The surgeries were painful, but I don't remember them being excruciating. I was on crutches for 6 weeks. You should have seen the hair on my legs after the cast came off! :crazy2:

The orthopedic surgeon performed a different surgery on my left foot than the one on the right. On the right he cut about four inches from the top of the bunion down. He adjusted everything and installed a screw in the bone below the bunion. He removed the screw the next year. On the left side he cut between the first two toes as well as on the side. I don't know exactly what he did, but the left one looks much better now - although it wasn't as bad to start.

I still have a little pain from time to time, but nothing like it was before the surgeries. The scarred area is still sensitive, and hurts like the dickens when I bump it or drop something on it.

Good luck with yours. Are your feet really bothering you? If so, do the surgery, it will only get worse. They told me if I didn't do something about it, I would be crippled with arthritis by the time I was 30. I'm 33 now and still going strong.

I have had them done on both feet and all I will say is if your thinkiing about doing it...see an orthopedic surgeon (preferably one who specializes in feet). I'm in an aircast for the rest of my life because a podiatrist did mine. I now have a ortho who specializes in feet, but the damage is already done.

Good Luck!!:D

I just noticed where you are from. I'm going to send you a PM with a doctors name.

I've had the surgery FIVE TIMES!!! , three times on the left foot and twice on the right. Know what? I still have to buy D width shoes. I develop a lot of scar tissue. The right foot is relatively normal looking and somehat narrower, although longer than the left. The left one still looks deformed, is painful, and very wide.

Maybe once we retire to Florida there will be a good orthepedist who like to work on feet.

I have had bunions and hammer toes removed on both feet , that was 12 years ago and it was a success.
I was between wheelchairs and crutches for almost 6 months, the doctor did one foot at a time.
The surgery for me was not painful ( as a matter of fact I saw them doing the surgery because I wasn't knocked out ) , the recovery was another story because I had a metal pin in each one of my toes that were operated on , and the removal was the worst part, but overall I would do it again in a heartbeat. The pain I used to walk around with was unbearable.

My DSIL had it on each foot. She had the second one done right after she was pronounced "cured" from the first one. Each one took about 8 weeks of recuperation, I think she was on crutches for about 4-6 of those 8 weeks.

She would do it again in a heartbeat. Her feet are fine now, they look better, she can buy normal shoes.

For her, it was a total success.

I've got what the doctor called a "Taylors Bunion". It is located on the outter part of my foot. I had corizone injections into my foot a couple of years ago. He did suggest surgery but am holding off.

We had some people here last week-end and one of the ladies just had surgery a few months ago. Her's was on the inside of her foot. Her and I were both surprised where our bunions were located. As she thought they were all located where hers was and I thought they were all where mine, is located. Anyway, she said she doesn't thinks it helped.

As for me I've got a upcoming DW trip and hoping my bunion and my bad knees hold up with all that walking.
