Who has a Kindle? (wireless reading device)

Wow. I'm impressed. It was almost fully charged when I got it. The two books that I had pre-ordered on Amazon downloaded almost immediately and I began to read.

I have some retina problems in one eye, so the first thing I did was bump up the font one size! Amazing difference.

The only problem is the morning I have some eye strain/a headache, BUT that's just because I read so much last night - not because of the Kindle itself (I don't think).

My leather cover arrived today (Wednesday)- I ordered it Friday the 14th and it was supposed to be shipped 11/25 with delivery between 12/5 and 12/15- it is beautiful but is sitting there mocking me as I wait for the Kindle itself to arrive (ordered 11/8 and supposed to be shipped 12/1-12/5). ;)
BTW- the cover is a lovely shade of a rich red (better than the photo on Amazon like someone posted earlier) and smells like a saddle shop (in a good way!).

My Kindle has been shipped! Let the celebration begin!

I think I like using mine cover-less. It's easier to handle. I'm going to order one of those sleeves to store it in. I hate that hard fake leather thing that came with it.

I agree it's easier to handle cover-less but I think part of reason is that cover only has the brackets on the one side. I hope I like the leather case I ordered for it.

When I first got mine I was a little headachy too. I think it was just from too much reading.

When my new Kindle arrives do the books I have pre-bought automatically download when I turn on the wireless feature? I have 5 so far including the 80 cent Sherlock Holmes complete set!

The thing I liked about the cover it came with was the elastic strap. I could fold the front around to the back and use the strap to keep it in place. Then I slip my hand under the strap and I don't have to hold it at all really. This helped a lot in avoiding hitting the next/previous page buttons accidentally. And I have to reiterate (sp??) if you are sticking with the original cover GET A COUPLE OF SMALL VELCRO BITS put them on the back and it works fabulous to keep it steady and in place:thumbsup2

The strap is also great for hooking around my crutches to carry it around with me to the Drs office

I LOVE to read and after looking at the Kindle on amazon and reading everyone's posts, it looks like something I would want. How quickly are new releases available? I like to read romances......Danielle Steel especially, and I didn't find any of her books on amazon for the Kindle. Can you get books for the kindle somewhere else?

Yes, you can get books for the Kindle from other sources - but you should always check Amazon for the popular authors you read. If they aren't at Amazon, chances are they aren't going to be anywhere else, either. Many of the titles you can get other places are free or greatly reduced because they are already in the public domain. A popular author like Danielle Steele isn't going to fall in that category. If she is not in the Kindle store it means her publisher has not released electronic publishing rights to her books. There are a few other authors like that right now - Grisham and JK Rowling are the two most frequently mentioned.

If you read a lot of popular fiction a Kindle would probably still be a good fit for you - you still get to read your paper books even if you have a Kindle, and you could always keep getting your Danielle Steele in hardback or paperback format. If that's ALL you read, though, a Kindle wouldn't be the best bet for you.

There are exceptions as noted by DVCLiz, and you might want to do a little more research into the other genres you enjoy before you make your decision. I haven't read the exact statistics lately, so anyone with better info please correct me, but I believe at least 80% of new releases are available on Kindle and they are released at the same time as hardbacks are. Amazon is also working very hard to fulfill their goal of EVERY book EVER written being availble on Kindle. I'm not an insider and I don't have a crystal ball but I do believe in Kindle enough to think any author/publisher who doesn't negotiate digital rights is a fool and will learn that quickly. I guess we'll see....

My Kindle arrived! I LOVE it and have about 7 books in there. I'm learning the features and it fits great in the red leather cover I got- thank you to all! Now I'm off to read and read and read.....:lmao:
DH looked a little rattled when I clutched it to my chest and called it "My Precious" in my best Gollum voice.

Happy Kindle Day!!! I love my red cover, too - I think it's elegant and so useful to hold it securely.

I, too, am LOVING my kindle and am reluctant to take time away from reading to figure out all the cool stuff it does besides show me my book text in font big enough for my very bad eyes.
Maybe I missed it on this thread, but can someone tell me how to find free books to download and how I get them to download to the kindle? I know, I know, I should read the directions. But our home computer crashed and I have to do it from work and while I may have time to get some books downloaded today, I don't have time to research how to do it and then to do it, if that makes sense. ;)
TIA!!!

I got my Kindle when I arrived in the States on Thurs night. What Amazon DOESN'T tell you is that you need to have access to a Sprint cell phone tower. They do not have that where my mother lives. So instead of downloading books as I wonder through Barnes and Noble, I am downloading them on the laptop first. The same thing I'll have to do in Belgium.

Buy the "Kindle Cookbook" for $3.99 and anything you need to know is in there. :)

Just want to jump in and give kudos to Amazon/Kindle customer service. We took the Kindle on our two week vacation and it was FABULOUS. We should get credit for PR work since so many people stopped and asked us what it was and we raved about it.

DH was reading it in the van on the way home, put it down and when he picked it up again, the screen was all crazy and unreadable. He didn't think he sat on it or anything but it was toast. We thought, crud, we are out $400.

So we called Amazon cust service and explained the situation. The guy has us try a couple of things then said, well it is a hardware issue, we send a new one right out! :worship: Amazing! This is for a Kindle purchased in May with no extra insurance. The sent it yesterday and we will have it today.

It was a bummer the screen failed but the customer service is excellent!:thumbsup2

I second that! It is a great guide to everything you need to know about your Kindle.

That is so good to know!!! Hopefully, mine won't have any problems, but it's nice to know Amazon is willing to make it right if it does.

OMG! I'm cracking up because last night my husband asked, "So, how is your Precious?" in HIS best Gollum voice!

I love this darned thing.:lovestruc I had a hair apppointment last night. I stuck it in my purse and, instead of passing the time reading trashy magazines while I waited, I was able to read several chapters of my book. I never would have brought my big book along and it certainly wouldn't have fit into my smallish purse.

I have definitely decided that I like reading my cover-less, but I ordered this sleeve to carry/store it in. It's very cushioned and I'm very happy so far. SO much more secure than that case it came with.
