As a dedicated long time Trekker, the only thing I asked my DD13 for for Mother's Day way to go see Star Trek with me. She resisted since she has never seen a single episode of the original (where did I go wrong?
) but eventually agreed to go as a favor to Mom.
Well, she loved it, although she did not get any of the great references to the original. Great cast, lots of action, plenty of humor. I was expecting to love it and I did; I was amazed at how much like the original characters these new ones were, yet they were different enough to be interesting. I can't wait for the next movie! (And I got choked up several times during this one: that first shot of the Enterprise, when the old Spock told Kirk "I have been and always shall be your friend" from when he 'died' in one of the earlier movies, the theme music and narration from the original.... I am such a sentimental cry baby)
