Question for those on unemployment: If you decide to go back to school, can you still keep getting those checks? I have no idea how I'm going to pay for schooling (but will of course apply for any scholarship I can) but if I can't keep some income coming in, there's no way I can do it. Any suggestions?
See if you can get in through the WIA program! I'm doing it right now...the state (or rather, a charity) pays for your schooling, and you keep getting paid by unemployment. You sort of have to pick from a list of acceptable programs, because they won't simply pay for you to return to school; what I was told is that "It's not for a job change, it's for a job upgrade." I was doing data entry, and now I'm pursuing an accounting assistant certificate. Still an office job, but I'm learning some new skills. There is also a cap on the funds; I am getting up to $5k. Anything beyond that would be my responsibility.
I had to first see a specialist at our Job Works office and be certified as a "dislocated worker." There are 3 criteria that have to be met; "have to be terminated or laid off," "is eligible for Unemployment Compensation," and "is unlikely to return to a previous industry or occupation." Once I had that, I was registered for a WIA Orientation, which is just a meeting to learn what the program is and what you can do with it. I was given a very large packet of forms to fill out; financial stuff, a job log showing that I was trying and failing to find work, etc. Returned that to Job Works, then some weeks later a caseworker called me for a one-on-one meeting, after the previous paperwork had been accepted and signed by a supervisor. We talked for about an hour about what I've done, what I was looking to do, etc. Filled out more paperwork and waited for my voucher to come through.
In the meantime, my caseworker told me to contact the school and talk to a counselor, which I did. I had to fill out a FAFSA, which of course showed that I wasn't eligible for financial aid of any sort. Once I did that, and once the WIA voucher came through with the required signatures, I was able to register for classes and buy books. The school accepted 2 classes that I took 17 years ago, so I am taking 2 classes this semester, 2 next semester, and then I "graduate" with my certificate. I pay nothing...WIA pays for the classes, the school fees, the books, everything I need. I can't say that it's been easy to go back, but I'm glad I did!
Just wanted to add...I'm not the first person I know to do it. My mother and a friend of hers both did it some years ago, and now a former coworker is also going through it with me (a different area of study, however). Our orientation meeting was PACKED, so a lot of people are finding out about this and doing it.
