Who else is job hunting right now?

Ugh, I'm sorry RUDisney. I guess on the up side, you got an answer and don't have to wait and worry. I know that doesn't help much though.

As for the DH, tell him to suck it up! LOL... I don't know what I'd do if my husband were a picky eater. Does he like spicy things? Maybe he'll surprise himself and really enjoy Indian food. Now that you mention it, I could go for some korma (sp?).

I'm really starting to obsess about the fact that my references are blowing me off! If it had just been one of them, I could rationalize it by thinking they were too busy or procrastinating. But all three??? Now it's got me wondering what I did wrong! One of them is a close friend of mine, too. We even just talked about it last weekend and she was saying how happy she was to do it!

Bananda, that really makes it tough. I went through that when I was in my early 20s but still living at home. My parents were claiming me as a dependent for as long as they could, which I don't blame them, but without money to go to college I was having a hard time finding a good enough job to move out on my own. There should be an easier way to do it. Have you tried calling the financial aid office at TAFE to see what they say about it? Maybe they'll have other options for you.

DH has been looking for over a year now. My heart goes out to those who are also suffering this interminable waiting. It's hell.

You're so sweet. Thank you.

DH loves spicy food. His pizza crunches from the amount of crushed red pepper he puts on it. That's not the problem. He just hasn't tried it before. On the bright side, he just went to my favorite sushi place after golf on Tuesday and he loved it. He's always said he didn't want to go there until his friends wanted to. Now, he's pushing to get me to go there again.

Maybe I'll get a night at Ruth's Chris and at the sushi restaurant out of this. ;) Ruth's Chris is in the Mohegan Sun casino. We haven't been there since it opened. It's only 15 minutes from our house. DH prefers to go to his uncle's casino instead. That one is 30 minutes away. While that's nice, I'd like to go to see what Mohegan has to offer, too. Plus, I have a 20% off coupon to RC.

I'm also searching for a job....no luck yet (bad time to graduate college) but I am trying to stay positive!

Good luck to everyone searching :thumbsup2

My dh and I became unemployed 7/31. We actually had a small business, but it was a franchise and corporate terminated our contract. :sad2: So we lost our business and we haven't found jobs. Dh is really the only one looking right now because we are down to one vehicle and he's the breadwinner. I can walk to Target from here, but they aren't hiring, hopefully they will soon at least temporary for Christmas, anything! But I do have a 4 year old too, so I have to figure out child care also (if dh finds a job). This sucks.

I too am looking for a new job as I want to change careers. I'm in the opposite position of most of you...I'm a teacher and find it wholly unsatisfying. My main problem is that I don't quite know how to word my resume to showcase my talents even though I don't have any experience in any other fields. I feel like I could explain how teaching has given me extensive managerial experience but I don't know how to disseminate that into bullets points on a resume. Any suggestions?

I am so sorry.
That is one aspect I don't have to worry about....my girls are old enough to be alone. But finding a position at all is driving me nuts....Target and Taco Bell won't hire me (I think it was because I would have rather had a full 40 hrs a week) and those that I am qualified (or over-qualified) for have upwards of 500 people applying and/or want to pay just over min wage for all of my experience.

I am doing something wrong at interviews as I've had plenty (20+) and no jobs or job offers. :rolleyes1

JLIZ-do you have somebody who can look at your resume in person? If not, I bet somebody here would be willing to help you revamp it.

I had an interview last Thursday and was told that I'd be getting a call either way this week...still haven't heard a thing. I know it's only been a week and I'm sure the school has a lot of stuff going on but I'm starting to get worried. :guilty:

I know this isn't quite job-hunt related, but I'm starting to get nervous over my unemployment benefits. There was a note on this week's check, "You are scheduled to exhaust your benefits in approximately 2 weeks. Continue to file as directed." The state's website says that near the end of your first 26 weeks (where I am), they will send something regarding how to file for your 33 weeks of Emergency Unemployment Compensation. I haven't received anything yet! I'm going to see what this coming week's check says and then I'm going to call. Just had to get that off my chest.

The community college where I'm taking classes now had a couple of counselors interrupt a class the other day. They wanted to announce that they have a new career services center where resumes and cover letters can be reviewed, mock interviews can be conducted, and you can even get some interview-appropriate clothing free of charge. I will definitely be visiting them. The people at the Department of Labor said my resume and cover letter were wonderful, but they can't be that great if companies don't call me!

Well, I still haven't heard back from the job interview I had, but I did get a call from a different place today and have an interview there on Thursday!

I'm not sure how qualified I am yet. It's at a clinic and the job is for a mobile therapist for behavioral health services. In the help wanted ad, it called for a masters degree in psychology, social work, or education, so I took my chance and applied.

Best of luck this Thursday. Having been the hiring manager for many years in my last job, I can tell you that we didn't call people in for interviews to waste our time. We called in those whom we believed were qualified.

Go in with confidence and don't forget to send the thank you card after the interview.

OMG, you guys, I got the job! I got the adult instructor position -- the one where my references hadn't called back. Well they finally all got in touch. She said they had told her I'd be perfect for the job.

I still have that other interview Thursday, which I'm not sure what to do about. The job I got is part time, but the other one is flexible. anyway, I'm excited!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: Hooray! Unless you need to give them an answer asap, do the interview on Thursday to keep your options open. :thumbsup2

awesome!!!!:cool1:

I would go to the other job interview and tell them that you would love the position but because you have been offered and accepted another part time position those hours would be scheduled first.

I really need to join this support group :sad2:

I graduated from law school last year and received a passing score for the Ohio bar exam at the end of October 2008. So here it is, almost a year later, and I am employed at a grocery store as a clerk.

I am lucky enough that my parents are paying my loans right now (I will be paying them and the loans once I get a higher paying job).

I've only had one legal interview. I've interviewed at a lot of dead ends
(alot of those start up marketing/sales jobs that seem fishy).

The worst part of having a law degree is that I can only look for legal work in Ohio unless I want to take the bar in another state (2 months solid of studying 8-12 hours a day isn't really so appealing).

I've tried applying for lots of different fields, but most employers reply back and tell me that I am overqualified.

Frankly, not being able to find a job in my field is making me feel worthless and miserable.

I really hope things pick up soon.

I had a phone interview yesterday and after speaking with the interviewer I WANT this job, Office Manager for the Corporate Office of Maui Wowi Products. It was the calmest I've been before, during and after an interview.

She had said that they hadn't wanted to place the ad on Craig's List because they didn't think they would get anybody:rotfl:. I said and you probably got 600 hundred applications didn't you?:thumbsup2 (it might have been more like 1000). She said they got to be picky and I should be thrilled I made it this far.....and I said I was.

The most often asked "question" is "Tell me something about yourself." How do you answer that? I always ask if they want professionally or personally and continue after their answer (which is usually whichever ). Which is how yesterday's interview started...and how I was able to connect to the interviewer as she has an 8th grader and Senior (I mentioned them only because that is where I volunteer...in their activities), and her Senior is named Cassie also. :lovestruc

So... you have a law degree, passed the Ohio bar, also have an undergraduate BA or BS degree... hmmm.

Do any other states have reciprocity with Ohio?
If you're not working, maybe you should consider taking the bar in another state, one that *has* reciprocity with other states or one that has a lot of work for lawyers.
Have you considered sitting for the bar in DC? I would think there's a lot of work for lawyers in DC. I've heard it's not one of the hardest to pass, but I'm not a lawyer and have never played one on TV.
Do you have a good working relationship with any of your law-school profs? Could you maybe drop by and ask their advice about how to proceed? They might know about some jobs that you haven't heard about.
I know you're overqualified, but could you *stand* working as a paralegal or legal assistant.
Could you volunteer for some legal pro-bono work, maybe at a legal clinic? At least you'd be working in your chosen field and that way when you *do* interview and the partner asks "what have you been doing since graduation?", you'll have a cool answer.

If this makes you feel any better, I know of someone that recently graduated from UVa Law School, was offered a job out of state, made all the arrangements to move and then the law firm changed their mind, put them on a stipend and said they'd be hired full-time *next* year. So this person is in a new city, had signed a lease on an apartment and is living on a way-reduced salary.

Good luck with the search,
agnes!

OSB, to get a job outside of law, leave your law degree off of your resume. I had to remove VP from mine in order to get any callbacks. It's not a lie, it's just selling yourself so you can get a job that pays at least a little better than a grocery store clerk before you get a position in law.

Congratulations, MushyMushy! Definitely go to the interview on Thursday and accept the better of the two. There is no shame in calling back the first offer to give them an opportunity to either counter-offer you or to tell them that you've accepted a position that better suited your needs.

If you are offered both positions, at least you'll have a choice. You know what they say... it's either feast or famine when you're looking for a job. Hopefully, it will be your feast!

Thanks, guys! I have been numb ever since I talked to that woman. I have such a hard time believing that I'm finally moving forward for the first time in years! Well, except for college.

 I totally know how you feel. That's how I am with my education degree.

I wonder what's going on in the legal profession though! Going to law school was one of my choices before I decided on education and every time I looked in the paper there were ads for attorneys. Now, nothing. I haven't seen a job opening for attorneys in the longest time.

I hope you find something soon!!!

To be honest, I hadn't really heard of them before either....they are one of the first to come up with propiertry (sp?) smoothies (they have 600 franchisees in 4 countries) and hawaiin coffees. www.mauiwowi.com I learned yesterday that Colorado is one of the best states in the country for franchisers...we have over a dozen franchise headquarters in the DTC. Mowi Wowi is the second one I've interviewed with and I LOVED talking to the interviewer and it feels better run than the other. They had 42 employees and have scaled down to 12 in the past 2 years...that part scared me but she did say it was running more efficiently and wouldn't get smaller and only get a bit bigger.
