But there was the amazing Crissup with his mighty Durango, picking me up and taking me back home. Sigh.....
LOL!! I was sitting in O'Hare waiting for a runway to open long enough to get the plane down when the pilot evidentally finally decided his fuel supply had gotten too low. On board, they had told Carol they were thinking about heading for Witchita, KS, since St.Louis had already filled to capacity with other O'Hare flights. Next thing I know, I get a phone call from Carol telling me the plane is sitting on the tarmac at Rockford, but they can't stay because of no United facilities. Supposedly, they were trying to find a fuel truck so they could get off the ground again. Finally, they exceed the flight crews maximum working hours and the plane had to legally call it quits for the night. So, as I'm trucking on down I-90 at a high rate of speed watching lightning taking down trees across the corn fields, the plane was trying to find someone with keys to the airport so they could get the passengers off the plane. At one point, I stopped for gas just east of rockford and asked where the airport was and the attendant said they couldn't figure out why they suddenly had a rash of cars in asking how to get to the airport. LOL!!
Then, the portable stairs that they drive up to the plane wouldn't start, so the guy had to get his truck out there to jump the battery to get the stairs started. LOL!!
Poor Carol!! We had to stay and wait for the bags because, since there were no United employees, the pilot warned the bags would just be left and there would be no one to lock them up or watch them. And, of course, there were no limos to be had that night at any reasonable rate.
Another story, good friend of mine lives in Dekalb. He and his family had considered taking some no name airline out of Rockford to Orlando one time. They ended up flying out of O'Hare instead. The plane was about to push back from the gate when it had to stop and wait. Evidentally, this no name airline's plane broke and had to land at O'Hare and they were now putting everyone on his flight to get them to Florida. LOL!! Fortunately, since he had actually ticketed the O'Hare flight, he had assigned seating and didn't have to cram family members wherever he could.
I figured they should rename Rockford airport "Green Acres Airport". LOL!!
