Not too far away from my childhood home. I was a half block away from where Raynor avenue ran into I-80. I remember watching the bulldozers putting I-80 in when I was a little kidlet.
I'll bet you were more than a bit nervous when the tornado went through last year.
We were really lucky. It missed us by about three blocks. We had gone out of town and the sirens were going off when we got off 80 in New Lenox. I told DH we'd better get home fast because there must be something coming. . of course, by the time we got near our house we realized the storm had already been there. My oldest son watched it from our front porch. He's been known to do stupid things LOL! The destruction on Western Ave. was unbelievable.
There was a period in the early seventies where we seemed to get hit by tornados several years in a row. I recall the thing to do was to sit and watch it coming, then run into the basement as it got close.
Of course, we got caught in the Plainfield tornado on August 28th, 1990. We were lucky in that we just caught the edge of it. Most of the damage I was able to repair with supplies donated by the Salvation Army. Even today, though, tornados don't scare me. I respect them, but I figure if they're going to hit, they're going to hit. CarolAnnC, on the other hand, having just moved out here from New England, isn't used to them and they scare the bejeesus out of her.
Lake In The Hills here, but grew up in Wauconda, and DH in Orland Park, so we do lots of Northern Illinios driving to see family! Amazing how a Cubs fan can marry into a Sox family and still get along!
